I recently went to Scafell Pike to wild camp. Me, my wife and two children hiked up England's highest mountain and then spent the night in a tent. If you're interested in the best wild camping equipment and tips then I hope you find this video useful!

Pretty hillock. I absolutely LOVE you carried your dog around and let her continue to a part of the family in her dotage! I do the same with my old animals.

Nice video pal and very well put together... that was annoying about how they camped so close to you. But it will be incredibly hard to try and find solitude by a tarn and the easy to reach spots. I'm usually pretty close to the summit but find a nice tucked away hidden place well out of sight and away from any paths. Bit hard to try and find those though on a group camp as some are little just enough for 1 tent lol. Just out of interest did you still use a water filter? Good info about the potential 'weeing' further up stream but there is a lot more to worry about than that. Dead sheep etc can contaminate water and even if you get it high up from the source, no dead animals, the water is clearer than out your tap there can still be cyst's, bacteria and various microorganisms that can make you very bad. Obviously boiling it will help a lot to some extent but I'd 100% always use a filter. I've had quite a few over the years but now always use a Katadyn Breefree as it's got a fantastic flow rate, collapsible bottle and never let me down. Anyway great to see you enforce LNT and enjoyed your video very much. ATB keep enjoying the great outdoors! Chris 🙏🏼😊👍🏻🏕🤜🏻🤛🏻

I agree about how close your neighbours camped, i was in a pay as you stay campsite last year& I was the second tent in the field and believe me you could have got about 50 tents on ther ,when this couple rocked up right next to me, I said to them about the vast empty spaces only to be told “ we like this spot” now I had my radio on listening to my local radio talk show not loud but listening,& low & behold he walks across & asked me to turn the radio off 🤬🤬😡🤬😡

Yeah it’s a bit of a shame. You can understand the summit’s being busy but camping on someone else’s spot when there’s so much open space to choose from is pretty frustrating.

Hello Chris, from NZ. I can totally relate to the problem of wanting space to your self and family. In NZ we don't quite have your problem but I have had people camp next door when there is a 300M of open river flats to choose from. It spoils the isolation and peace. Our bush line (forest) goes up to 1200+M and then onto alpine so we don't normally have the problem at altitude and of course we don't have the population that you have, but if you truly want isolation, you cane go bush for months and not see a single soul. But to do that you have to have bush craft skills etc. Were my eyes deceiving me or did I see dozens and dozens of people on the top of the mountain ? It's getting worse then Everest !! Enjoyed the video ,looks like the kids enjoyed it and how many times would I have liked to be carried in some ones pack like you four legged friend.😂😂 ATB Cheers from the mountains of NZ 😃😃

NZ sounds great! Unfortunately in the UK it’s difficult to find real isolation. Scafell get’s the crowds because it’s part of the national three peaks challenge. The challenge also takes in Ben Nevis and Snowdon. All three tend to often have large crowds on top.

Well tbh if you camp at that tarn you can expect others to camp there it's very popular if you want solitude in the lakes camp away from the tarns you can't blame people for having the same idea as you
@ChrisWilkinson1
@ChrisWilkinson1 2 жыл бұрын
There was plenty of open space they could have used around the tarn. It’s the fact they were right next to us. Mountain guides explain there is a certain distance etiquette that wild campers should abide by. These people were not abiding by the etiquette or using their common sense. On top of this they were overly loud and disrespectful to those around them. It’s not ok.
@craig3401

@@ChrisWilkinson1 I agree with some of what you say some don't use there common sense but it's a popular spot for doe groups and school groups and yea there's a certain etiquette most follow but at most tarns they don't follow it which is ashame I try to avoid them and I wild camp most weekends
@ChrisWilkinson1

I can understand D of E groups perhaps not knowing any better. The group that camped by us seemed to be group leaders. The youth group they were leading were camped at a very acceptable distance away. The adult group leaders weren’t. I would have expected group leaders to be versed in mountain etiquette so that they can set an example and teach that to their groups. Maybe I expect too much of people.
@craig3401

We all do at times and that's why most regular wild campers don't use tarns to camp there always magnets for large groups.its a better experience to camp away from them and finding those quiet spots that most don't know about

those other campers should not camped so close to your camp, we all go to get away from people. Disgusting behaviour on their part. These are the people who spoil it for everyone else.

I don’t care about dislikes or downvotes etc so I’ll be candid and share my view that it’s not good wild camping etiquette to pitch and then leave your gear to hike off. After “leave no trace” the essence of wild camping is “pitch late and leave early”. As wild campers, knowing full well we are not authorised to be there, it’s our responsibility to be able to move on, without delay or complaint, at any time if asked to do so by a landowner or warden etc. Would you have been agreeable to leave and hike down the mountain in the dark at 2am with your small children if asked to move on by a warden? I’m sorry to say that I think that your family wild camping adventure video encourages the wrong sort of people into the activity. People who have recently made it more difficult for those who have been discreetly and responsibly enjoying the activity for years. There’s more to wild camping than nice drone footage and “leave no trace”. All that said, those people did camp too close to you.
