I have done that path many times, I think the tourist path was originally a pack trail for moving goods over the mountains. My fave route in the lakes up that path past angle tarn and on to sca fell pike.

I think this was the same time that I was in the Lakes - Jan 15/16 - I made the 5 hour trip from Norfolk and spent probably the best 3 days I've ever had, snow and sun, fabulous weather.
