Wild Camping UK | Penyghent | Yorkshire Dales

As a result of pretty unfavourable weather when I've been free, this was my first wild-camp since the end of February and although very cold at night, conditions were excellent. This contributed to a thoroughly enjoyable trip up one of my favourite mountains.

Nice camp and post Chris. One thing about that wind direction….it might blow through ya n not around ya but the vis is crystal. Love your obs of the flora n fauna of all your walks, it does put another dimension on everything you produce. I was fortunate in January to pop up to Horton on a day trip to see Hull Pot in fill. Absolutely remarkable phenomenon. We are so blest in the north of England to have such wonderful natural environments around us. I live in the lowlands on the old Humberhead levels and as a discerning person, can appreciate what our lowlands offer as well as our hills n dales n mountains have to offer. Keep posting and if ever you want to wildcamp in and amongst the lowlands, I can show you some wonderful sites and wild camping experiences. Not all wild amps have to be on the top of mountain although the views are probably better. Keep posting Chris….I always enjoy. Take care mucka.

Hello Ron and thank you. I'm very keen on wildlife and like to include anything half-decent I come across on my walks 🙂. Good on you seeing Hull Pot full....what a spectacle that must've been. You are absolutely right re wild-camps on hills. I'd definitely like to deviate away from that a bit. And will take you up on your kind offer sometime. I really fancy coastal camps as I love being by the sea. Over your way, the Yorkshire Wolds is another landscape I like so would give that a go too. I know the Humberhead Levels a bit, having visited a few nature reserves that way on. Places like Blacktoft Sands, Thorne Moors, etc. Bye for now, Chris

i were looking at that plant fossil chris other month when i was up there..i thought of you as i was looking at it thinking youd be able to tell me exactly what it was..it is a unique shape penyghent & having been up several times i do like that climb up that side..great to see the flowers etc starting to bloom in the mountains etc looking forward to summer now..tfs mate.

Stigmaria is one you come across fairly often in the gritstone areas of the Pennines Andy.....though deffo seen it more in the Dales 👍. Plover Hill is nowt special but PYG is a real favourite. It's wonderful that you finally got some spring weather! The purple saxifrage were worth the trip! Wow, exciting that there two plants! I like that you find fossils along the way- that one looked huge. I don't know if I would recognize a coral fossil. Your camping spot looked great up against the stone wall there, maybe you got a little extra warmth from it. There sure were lots of people out enjoying the day... that was fun to see. Yes it was! Thanks Jennifer. March was a dreadful month over here. The purple sax' occurs all around Penyghent on a limestone crag that circles most of the mountain. Unfortunately, most clumps are difficult to access. These are the best two I know. Thanks for watching and commenting. 🙂

The sax' is very easy to walk past Steve if you didn't know it was there. There is more on the descent near Wainwright's limestone pillar but it is quite high and out of reach. 'A sense of foreboding'......yes, there are certain locations that do that to me too.....it's a strange sensation. Thanks mate. ATB, Chris

Lots to like there Chris, 10 Park Drive took me back, I love the walk up from other side too, park up near Dale Head Farm, I would never consider wild camping there with the crowds, but look like you had it just right, love the flowers and the birds, also the geology, we have a lot of common ground as I have been to Pembrokeshire many times, love it, love barafundle bay and love going to St.Govans Head, if you get chance nip to the Stackpole Inn, really nice, have a great time all the Best, Tito 👍

Yep, I thought insanity had struck when I opted for PYG but heading over to Plover Hill ensured a mostly peaceful time. Unfortunately, the weather has been pretty shite down here. I know Stackpole but would've liked to have made it to Barafundle as I've heard it's a splendid beach. It was better today though and we did a boat trip road Ramsey Island near St David's. My grandad was the Park Drive smoker, though my Uncle Jeff preferred Woodbines. 😉 Thanks for your continued support pal. 👍

That’s was a lovely camp Chris and nice to see a photo of your Dad. Loved the saxifrage and the frogs. We didn’t see any frogs or spawn in the peaks last week I was surprised, but did see a lizard though. Enjoy your holiday in Pembrokeshire we used to go there a lot and even got married in St David’s. I’m off to Scotland on Sunday that’s the plan if I’m brave and fit enough for 2 weeks on st cuthberts way and the Scottish national trail. All the best 👍

How do Dave. Yep, my pa wasn't really a hiker, though loved nature and the countryside. He was pleased with himself after this one. We did manage one last hike before he died, up to Back Tor on the Derwent Edges from Cut-throat Bridge in 2020🙂. We love Pembrokeshire. We are staying close to St David's (the cathedral is magnificent) and today did a boat trip around Ramsey Island and then on to Whitesands Bay. These sort of family holidays work wonders for the soul. Overall, the weather hasn't been great this week though 😢. Have a good time up Scotland. Best wishes, Chris 👍

I agree, what a disappointing march that was weatherwise, on the upside I don't think I've ever seen the res's in the peak district as full. I went out for a drive and was up above high bradfield (outskirts of sheffield) the other day and the amount of lapwings and curlew was a joy to see....loads of them. Also, I might have been mistaken but I'm pretty sure I saw a Hen Harrier aswell, I don't think it could have been anything else how it looked and behaved. Another top video Chris, I really look forward to your videos. You have a superb, comforting presentation style. Like yourself, March thoroughly depressed me, even The Daffodils looked like they'd rather not have flowered. Half way through April now and it still feels like the middle of bloody winter !!! I laughe at the 10 Park Drive line, my grandad smoked them by the barrow load. And I fully agree about Pen y Ghent, an awe inspiring mountain and fair play for getting the summit all to yourself. I'm not a winter person really (both my parents really struggled in the winter months so I guess it is in my genes!) and when it drags on well into spring I get very frustrated sometimes. The ground under your tent looks lumpy. Is your mat sufficient to prevent you feeling the hills and dips? And those larger "pits" or whatever in the landscape, how are those formed? The deep trench made me think of Iceland - a bit mystical. Nice trip!

Hello Karen. It was quite lumpy but I have slept on worse. The mat I use is pretty good at absorbing them. The pits are probably sink-holes. Being limestone country they are a feature of the landscape. Best wishes, Chris

I do it a lot 🙄. I've only managed a couple of (lure) fishing trips (near St David's) because of bad weather and blanked both times 😭. I'll try and give Marloes a go next time. I'm desperate to get a bass.....I've only ever caught one.

@Chris J-B Great. Go back and observe that giant piece of tree. Yes, you will get a characteristic of stone. This is the kicker. All rock at one time was a tree. When a tree is melted by high intense heat than it melts. The Devils Tower is a giant tree stump. At the base is the bark of that tree. Why do I believe it's bark? Because the trees had a fungus that the rocks at the bottom of the Tower had a well. There was, in pre-flood times, massive trees. And those trees petrified under the salt water conditions. It's a piece of a tree. Go back and just look at it. It's a piece of a branch petrified.

Thanks mate. The Go Pro I just use the standard settings on 2K (it's a Hero 10 and an improvement in image quality on the Hero 7 I had before. I also use a Sony ZV-1 which is great but the image stabilisation is not as good as the Go Pro. I find if the light is good, as they were on this trip, that really helps the image in both cameras. 🙂

I'd say it's no worse than most tents in those sort of conditions. Overall I've been very happy with it. 🙂
