The threat of dog attacks is very real, especially from well organised packs. These packs have a large territorial range. The packs have their own social structure and that is where their strength is in the form of co ordinated attacks. Where humans are normally top of the food chain ref hunting for food, humans become part of the food chain when these packs are on the hunt.
Dogs that have been dumped in the bush by irresponsible owners, soon form new packs or are absorbed into established packs, often interbreeding with the native dingo.

Every wild mutt I have ever seen has bolted as soon as it sees me unless I seen it first through my scope!

Packs of domestic dogs are more dangerous than packs of wolves or coyotes. They don't just kill for food, or territory/resources, they kill, to kill. In the Sandhills of Nebraska back in the late 70's mid 80's we had a few of them pack up and really raise cane with livestock, pets, and even people. The only thing to do, is the men would go out and hunt them. It's difficult because they don't just stay out in a feral pack. Often, in the morning, the dogs will go their separate ways and go back to their owners houses. Someone got a picture of the pack once, and a person recognized one of the dogs as a local farmer's dog. Go over to his house, there's the dog, nuzzling up to people and licking them. I was stationed in Alice Springs, Australia for 2 years and the Aussies had a problem there once and the big city Americans just didn't understand. I was trying to explain how much more dangerous, packs of domestic dogs are than wild dogs, etc, and it just didn't compute.

Thank you. Abandoned pets are a big problem in rural areas. Contract baiting is not working. Wild dog packs are still a big problem in our area All the best. Thank you for watching.

Thank goodness you have had the scary experiences of dealing with the Wild Dog problem, and you’ve made the quite emotional video, explaining just exactly how it is. The damn Federal, State and Territory Governments honestly just couldn’t give a hoot. These wild dogs can be anywhere and worst of all, they would probably brake windows of your house just to kill you to get a feed.

Thank you for the video. This is a difficult and frightening topic that I have not seen addressed. More and more dogs are being dropped off and abandoned in our area due to poverty, lost jobs and homes, etc. So far, they are not forming their own packs. I think they are being killed by the packs of coyotes in our area which are also killing cats, sheep, poultry, and calves along with all the wildlife (deer, foxes, etc) except for woodchucks and rabbits for some reason. I'm grateful for your sober discussion of this topic and the tips you gave. Best wishes to you and yours.

Hi Austdragon Sounds like you are a compassionate guy, who has had some very close encounters with some dangerous dogs. I too have had a couple of close calls with feral dogs, unfortunately for me, I lost my empathy for dogs because of it, I have 2 dogs and love them to bit's. but I would shoot a stray in a heartbeat. I worry for my sister in law's family, they have bought a farm in Central Victoria and are quite against guns, city folk , they have 3 small kids that play outside in the paddocks all the time on there own, a big worry. I pray they never have to find out about feral dogs, but that is not my call. I have a cheap hi tec suggestion with the feral dogs, capture one [if possible], and fit it with a gps tracking collar, then track from your mobile and only shoot the other dogs in the pack, should work for a year. We have to remember, we are smarter than the dog, if we want to be. It is only a matter of time before some hiker in the bush gets mauled to death by a pack of dogs, in my experience, most never carry protection for that sought of thing. After my experience I would never be hiking without a very big walking stick, not allowed to have a rifle just hiking out, let alone a handgun, but a 5ft -1/2 inch shark bite rigid plastic pipe with a ductape handle gives me some feeling of safety. Australians are just lambs in the woods, mostly disarmed, castrated by government red tape, constantly being told how we need to be more PC, act less like men and be more hipster. Bit depressing really. Anyway, just thought I would let you know, you are not alone, and a lot of people feel your pain. Best of luck with your eradication program.

True it doesn't compute with city folk. It happens in urban areas too. In rural areas, my area very hard to track and shoot. Very smart dogs, know the territory and safe havens where hunting is not permitted here in national parks. Good experience and info you have shared. Thank you. All the best.

there has been a problem with them up here for years. I was even in a group being stalked by some out bush. Urban attacks happen to. I was talking to someone who got bailed up in a phone box by dingos the next town 15min away and just yesterday I struck up a conversation with someone who bought a property out that way and he said there were big ones out there. there seems to be a wild dog problem all over the place and it really makes me wish I had a gun out bush.

The Georges river borders the military lands in my local bushlands, I think the army land was a safe haven for them until the army did something about it. It use to be scary to camp alone any where near the border but now all you see is a goat or two. Good to see you touching on this topic, wild dogs can be a real problem for bushwalkers and campers if not addressed soon enough. Cheers.

Good informative vid mate. We don't have a problem with ferrel dogs in England but I can under stand how dangerous a wild dog pack could be.. Not to long back a woman who lives on the edge of our estate was backed back in to her house by 3 bull greyhounds, the dogs had jumped her fence and chased a cat up a tree so she went out to see them off but they turned on her, needless to say she was very upset. It's been reported that these same dogs have killed a dog but now they are no where to be see

UHF alarm and a cheap camera set up sending live footage (purchase off eBay from China) plus a slow turn on light that has a switch that is remote from the source and faces the back of your prey (simply guide or funnel them into bait facing away from light). Again slow warm up light is easy to sort, with only a change in bulb (compact fluorescent lamp). Then sit back and wait with your 222/223 ready to go.

I totally agree you shoot as many as you can they are dangerous and kill native wildlife at a alarming rate , our wildlife does not stand a chance , as for kids on farms is just darn right scary as hell.Kids playing in a paddock is something of the past where there is a feral dog problem, and it needs to be taken care of.

Dingoes kill to eat, feral dogs kill for the fun of it.Feral dogs have lost their fear of people and consider us as fair game, never trust a feral dog. There is a big difference between a dingo and a feral dog.Good video.

Hi I’m in Ireland we had a problem a few years ago with dogs killing sheep. Took a few months and some serious thinking. I had a bitch in season so we took her out for a few hours around the fields we knew they were using. She urinated a few times and later in the day we got 3 of them. I saved some of her urine and got 2 more a few weeks later. Might be worth your while giving it a try. Good luck.

Just for the record this is not a dig at bull greyhounds! Btw Nice little dogs there dragon, are they staffords? All the best buddy. Richie.

A dog coming into a yard should be easy to feed exclusively, therefore to bait. The danger seems overly dramatic, they aren't starving leopards or lions, they are dogs. And much of the problem packs go home in the morning to their own doorsteps or sofas. where town comes to country with it's people & attitudes. . Having the dog get away at night an example. The number of people mauled by domestic dogs vs wild dogs will lower the drama. Not something to risk nonetheless, neither is using an undersized cal weapon. .22 hi-power at the very least for close range, bigger at distance (over 25m)

I know this is an old vid but consider employing the tactics American Predator (Coyote, Wolf primarily) Hunters do in the West and Mid-West U.S. Try calling them in with game calls in addition to shooting them off carcusses. There's many good videos demonstrating successful strategies: I recommend especially Randy Anderson and Les Johnson's videos on KZbin but there are others too The type terrain and setting up properly in relation to the wind and Sun, you don't want it coming up in your eyes for instance, is also very important. It's a lot harder in dense type terrain but just sit very still and use a shotgun and, if allowed, an electronic call with a remote so you can set it at distance to divert their attention away from you (terrain, wind, etc. dictates). fwiw.

Thanks. I tried to convey as much info as concisely as I knew how. May I ask how your battle with the feral and Wild Dogs is going these days? What has worked best for you, if anything? And, what's up with the Roo, Goat, Donkey, Camel situation. If you know and don't mind. Thanks again and best wishes. Oh yea, couple more tips on canine hunting: Identify their major travel routes and find high points from which you can repeatedly snipe them from time to time. If possible put a shooter downwind of you 50-70 meters and, if using electronic call, place it at least 25-40 meters UPwind of both you and the downwind shooter (if you have one). If there's a third party (be careful, the more people you have the more chances of the canines spotting you), have them watch the rear. Canines are sneaky little devils as I'm sure you're well aware by now.

Thanks for the response. OMG it's worse than the US's feral hog problem! The 1080 poisoning didn't work in the US. It's all but been abandoned these days. They sell Helicopter Hunts to help eliminate the feral hogs and coyotes in some of the worst areas. But, it doesn't seem to work but temporarily. They're like cockroaches and just multiply even more. Wish I was in position to help you guys with your issues. It's gotta be tough for the Ranchers and Farmers. Best Wishes.

Suspect the only places coyotes have declined is where wolves have displaced them. If correct, shooting is futile except for temporary local control.

Aus, I'm not sure of your firearms or trapping laws there, so I'm at a disadvantage. Whether feral dogs, or even coyotes, like we have here, the canine works pretty much the same way. As a trapper, I use a Bridger # 2 off-set coil spring trap for these animals. If you did so, you would have to isolate your own dogs till you eradicated this feral pack. Let me PM you on this further... - C.J.

I can tell you don't like having to kill dangerous feral dogs so would you be open to letting others hunt them. probably wouldn't be too hard to find someone willing.
