Geez, A+... This was one of my favorite SNES games of all time as a kid. Managed to finish it on Hard with no continues (though plenty of deaths :P) once back then... Can't even finish Normal without continues on Reloaded yet, but I'm working on it. Learned some good tricks from this, thanks! It never occurred to me to use the lack of time limit during boss sections to shoot all the background objects you didn't get in the stage proper for extra points, nor to "farm" deflecting their shots to build up the Vulcan. I've still got a long way to go!

My only gripe about this game is that I wish it didn't take time away when you kill/destroy enemies. Get the most out of getting that high score.
@ArctheLadder10 ай бұрын
Yeah, big memorizer stuff where I think the game is so fine tuned now I don't fully have the skills to play Clint and Annie at their best. Managing the time means you have to do certain things because there's no room for freestyling. In one sense, I guess that's good for structure, in another I always feel restricted and it feels like I'm doing more than what I think the game earns of me. I haven't played for score in a while, and there's a really great player who broke 4 million with Annie, super skilled. But seeing the stuff they did to achieve this, it looks and feels brutal. If anything goes wrong, you're just kind of wasting your time and I don't like playing games that way.

They should have made a small guide to other mechanics. On the SNES, this game was frustrating until I figured it out. Would have saved me a lot of time.
@ArctheLadder4 жыл бұрын
Agreed, I noticed that a lot of people have that problem. The thing is that some mechanics are just inherently bad or will often get you killed unless you do them in very specific ways. Most people want to roll out of the way of gunfire in this game, which actually takes the focus off of shooting bullets down to build meter or that you can do a bunch of other things before even doing the defensive roll. I think designers likely have to face balancing how invested someone might be coming into a game and who is actually there on the good faith that they'll be shown a good time.

@@ArctheLadder You've said everything everyone may be thinking. Fortunately, this game is enough fun with friends to bypass some of the frustration, but I remember vividly how less of a hard time I had with the SNES game than this one. I heard Bullet is supposed to be easy mode, but I don't want to have to play a dog just to get good at the game. It's Annie all the way. Lol.

@@ArctheLadder Cool I thought so, been a while since I played it, thanks for the answer. Would you recommend this enough (is there enough new content?) vs just emulating the original on a phone with a Wee2T? Is it worth its price for the Switch (30£+ seems hefty for a physical copy)?

I don't seem to get notifications about response/replies... well, it's extremely late but I would actually just recommend emulating it.

A friend of mine recommended this game, but I felt like it was too expensive for such a short game. So I decided to rent it from GameFly instead. And I ended up holding onto it for several days. It's a lot of fun. I still think that $30 is too expensive for such a simple game though. But I might buy the Steam version at some point as it's $10 cheaper. But I also like the idea of having it on the go on the Switch, so I'm hoping that version gets a price drop. It seems like a game worth spending about $20 on. While it is short, actually beating it on hard with all four characters is something that is going to take a long, long time. I can barely beat it on easy, a mode which (on the Switch at least) gives you unlimited continues. Getting good at the game definitely requires a mastery of the game's mechanics, but it's also a whole lot of memorization too. Enemies always spawn in the same order at the same locations and each have their own unique attack patterns. And your chances of survival, no matter how good your reflexes are, will be quite minimal until you learn these patterns. It's extremely old-school in that way. Some people would say that's a bad thing, since requiring players to memorize patterns isn't exactly fair. And once you know where to stand and shoot, the game becomes less challenging and more repetitive. Still, even if you have the patterns down, you still need to be paying close attention and reacting quickly because many enemy attacks take your position into account. You can't just stand in specific places all the time. You have to be continuously moving around. I was wondering why you were concerned about that one lost life considering the game didn't even let you collect more than 9 lives at a given time. But apparently the game keeps track of how many lives you had in total at the very end, even though the life counter never went over 9. It's always weird when games do that.
@ArctheLadder6 жыл бұрын
Wait for a price drop because basically in Japan the game was 20 dollars on release and still is lol. There's a mark up for it using Retro/Nostalgia pricing and it's scummy. The game is pretty short if you just want to beat it so I think you're making a good decision if price is an issue. I got really good at scoring well in the game but I don't think it's anything I'd want folks to see as appealing in and of itself. The reason this game can be long is because it's addictive to want to get a high score. It doesn't offer too much outside of that once you can clear it, I don't really feel enriched by it. Get that cheap version.
@ArctheLadder6 жыл бұрын
Actually, the game is always challenging even if you know where to stand, because whether enemies fire at you or not and what power ups you get are entirely random. Some factors are static, but the reason the game is challenging is also more coercive than appealing. The problem isn't whether it's challenging, it's HOW these games are challenging. Baiting someone into wanting a good run is BAD. Static elements aren't bad at all, making the game easier overtime is good because better games emphasize other aspects once you figure out how to play. You can start thinking about what the game is conveying. I think Wild Guns is just uh... transparently a western exploitation fantasy about scoring/making money. It's kind of sad lol.
@kevinr4176 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the advice. Actually, the Steam version is probably better to get anyway because the Switch version doesn't have online multiplayer. Every other version has it, but not the Switch version. No online leaderboards either. I guess the developers assume that Nintendo gamers are used to not getting online features, so they just didn't bother. Then again, I've heard that the multiplayer is frustrating because players have to share lives, which means that if your friend doesn't know what he's doing, you had better be able to survive the level on a single life. Who thought this was a good idea? You can't choose a difficulty level in multiplayer either, so the "beginner" difficulty that offers unlimited lives isn't an option. One wonders if they had people play test the multiplayer at all. But maybe they figure "Old games were hard and often inconvenient. Get over it." In any case, after a few days of playing the game, I think I got my fill for now, more or less. It seems like the kind of game that'd be fun to kill an hour or two with every once in a while. I'm a big fan of the kinds of games that are easy to jump back into after weeks of not playing it. I like to play through the original Super Mario Bros every so often, even though I've played it so many times before. Wild Guns could become that kind of a game for me. Contra 3 on the SNES has recently become a game I plan to go back to every so often, once I played through it on the SNES Classic and got used to its nuances. People seem to think it's ridiculously hard, but, like Wild Guns, a lot of the "challenge" involves learning patterns. Once you know where to stand and general enemy behaviors, the game becomes much easier. I used state saves at the beginning of each stage on my first time through, but now I don't need them. Except when I get to the last boss's final form. I still haven't figured out how to consistently avoid his attacks. Anyway, I put Wild Guns on my Steam Wish List. If $20 is the standard price, I can probably get it cheaper when it eventually goes on sale. I'm in no hurry to play it again. And if it's in my Wish List, I'll get an email when the price drops. Super convenient. As for the original price being scummy, I mostly agree with that. I doubt it cost them very much to adapt the game for widescreen, add a couple new characters and stages and tack on some online features. (Were the game completely new, I think $20 might be fair, depending on who you ask.) Wild Guns is a pretty niche style of game though, so I doubt it sold in huge numbers. There's always a balance between development costs and expected total sales when determining a game's price. I can buy GTA 5 on sale for $30 right now, a game that cost SO much more to make than Wild Guns, but has sold WAY more copies. There's definitely something to the nostalgia angle though. Wild Guns is one of those SNES games that became rare, and thus expensive, so if you really want to play it, Wild Guns Reloaded probably seems like a steal at $30. Of course, you could always just buy a reproduction cartridge. Though I'm not sure about the legal implications there. I doubt Natsume is involved with their production, so you might as well just download a ROM if you have no qualms buying a repro cart. Either way, you're getting a game and the developer isn't getting paid for it. Sorry for the long reply. I mostly just wanted to say thanks for the advice. Also, congrats on the World Record. Very impressive. And I learned a lot of techniques from watching it.

There's probably a longer conversation here, but I'll just say I'm glad I could help. Though, on the subject of online, all versions of the game have online leaderboards but no online play as far as I know, other than the PS4 and PC versions having ways of doing things like Shareplay or using nVidia cast workarounds. I think the multiplayer just emphasizes scoring purely. Which is a problem when people can't even play the game online or find people who would be interested in even exploring the multiplayer. There's just a presumed interest that people will want to play for score and, well, I can't deny the game isn't designed around getting a high score. The multiplayer mode, strangely, is where they put their foot down like "You have to be good at the game" and I can think of a few reasons why they might come to that conclusion but either way it's stupid. I don't even want to play for score now, I actually wanted a version I could play reasonably well online. Them's the breaks!
