Wild Hearts is the new hunting game from Koei Tecmo and EA Originals, and it shows some real promise when it comes to taking the genre in a new, positive direction. The only problem is it wasn't quite ready yet.
This review, while sponsored by EA, is of my own words and opinions. And as with any review, please remember to look into multiple sources when considering making a purchase or forming your own opinion on a game - more data means more informed!

@@alexgreifenkamp I disagree. Yes if you leave it at that it's a ahitty review, but if you go "this is similar to monster hunter with these differences" you can skip what a MH game is and just focus on the new. But lemon seems to be assuming that people have never even played a MH game so is explaining it all from scratch

@@mesaprime4368 Especially with the "You all know the "Kaiju hunting genre"". It's like calling soulslikes "You all know the grimy, dark, difficult, dodgerolling-staminahaving-boxdestroying action adventure game genre, right?" @@alexgreifenkamp I don't think the idea of comparing games is that the person reading/watching the review has complete knowledge of all games that are remotely similar to the game being reviewed. The idea is to give the audience opinion about the game being reviewed, yes, but also to compare against the competition to give the audience a baseline. For example, let's say you're making a review of a totally fictional fighting game that is coming out. This is a market with a lot of competition. Even assuming the gameplay and graphics are pure 10/10, the game being good doesn't mean that it doesn't have its quirks. Maybe the game has crappy tutorials and isn't very newcomer friendly. Maybe the game is shipped without some basic features. Maybe the game has P2W DLC. *cough* Tekken 7 *cough*. It would be a disservice to the audience to not mention other games in the same genre or even older games from the same series. You have to make a baseline of "what the community expects" and "what the community believes is good." You can't expect people to have played all of the Battlefield games, or all of the CoD games, or all the Street Fighter games, but you can definitely say "this other game has such and such which was changed/removed/added in this title I'm reviewing."

I haven't had any issues with frame rate, so the D1 patch fixed that, and the game has been a BLAST. Also, my personal favorite is the Hook and Blade, it's so damn evasive and deals great damage fast. As for a challenge run, I would say Karakuri only, but it takes forever to unlock damaging karakuri, and waiting for your hunting buddy to kill it isn't an option either, since it attacks so rarely. It might be viable if you focus all upgrades on it into attack, though. Food for thought. Fun fact; Karakuri is from Japanese folklore and is basically wooden automaton controlled by magical strings.

You do have to land the final hit with a weapon to get the monster into it's downed state to be finished off. So you have to be 100% sure the monster has 1 hp left or else you'll have to redo the hunt if your 1 hit does kill the monster.

You did indeed peak my interest a bit more. I currently I'm on a Hunt-a-thon for all the games (1-1g... world-ice-rise-sun+frontier) I have a plentiful plate read for me. As you said with the Karakuri thing, the idea if it changes what I hope for it. One of my dreams in a monster Hunter game is a simple change but a huge one in my mind, a on world crafting/cooking station. If I can avoid the main area for a bit and hunt and grow on my own the I'll add this in my list. I just really like the idea of survival more than hunting in my mind, makes everything feel more important.

@@JULR0W in what regard? The 600 loot limit in inventory is the Standard of the series, and if you got trouble with that there is a 5000ish inventory box after every mission. If anything FF SOP became a lot better NOW because there is also the tradition of these games peaking at DLC3. On DLC2 they added “Fusion” so the grinding of items became way easier and now on DLC3 we got mimic material essentially turning the creation of builds from a 1000’s of hours journey into a 10 hour or less grind. Team Ninja Souls-likes are the best next to Fromsoft, and the updates per dlc make the games truly unique instead of a copy-paste copycat.

P.S its one of the games amalgamating form the mosnter hunting formula we all know of, it aint going to be one of those games replacing a "franchise" that founded the sub-genre mostly coming from a *"new"* IP with a solid community, as stating the obvious the game is inspired of MH. Wild Hearts, being a successor to Toukiden. Other than performance issues since being a title co-develop by the division of KOEI TECMO, it's tolerable enough due to how comprehensive the mixed genre the game offers for its AA scale, like Eurojanks. I dig the building mechanic as its identity, for its gameplay palette to give a fresh experience amalgamating from Monster Hunter; it offers more for its plethora of gameplay variety, making it more engaging and dynamic with its added verticality.

Midrange PC here (I had minimal issues with ER - a single optional boss arena spazzed out texture-wise and I'm unsure if that was even a specs issue). Everything I see of this game looks amazing and I'm itching to play. It's a shame performance has to be the achilles heel here. I only got into PC gaming in 2020 (got a friend's handmedown PC - self-built - and immediately played MHW:I). What this *also* means is that I'm a complete noob to PC specs and such. Iffy performance is one thing, but another entirely when you're new to everything and the games you want to play aren't working as intended so you get even more confused. Yeah. As much as it sucks, I'm gonna wait until everybody can agree the performance is good. I hope that doesn't dig a new franchise's grave prematurely, because it does look like a ton of fun.

I won't be picking the game up souly for the muliplayer limitation. I have more then two friends. I want to hunt big monsters with a full team of 4-6. We live in a modern world where we can habe 36-50 players on a single map. I get that it's a upcoming studio and they are most likely fairly small. However small studios haven been able to pull off large mulitplay without much issue. So 4 player should be more then doable espically on EA servers. So I will be sticking with monster hunter and other 4-6 player games.

@@TheBacklogs the reason i asked was cause i recently completed my first run of that game on bloody whisker and thought to myself you might enjoy the challenge since you beat salt and sanct with fists and potatos, what makes tails of iron more mercilessly hard and frustrating compared to what youve experienced before in salt challenge runs?
@TheBacklogs

The main issue I had was that you basically are only allowed to make a single mistake before you die (2 shots, 1 kill if you're not fast enough with the heals), and every time you die you get pushed preeeeetty far back with no way to skip past everything you've already done or skip cutscenes. Just got tedious after awhile. At least with Salt I could skip past fights I had already overcome and sprint straight to the bosses.
@Cayden.1
@Cayden.1 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheBacklogs that's pretty fair, the combat is very hard to get a hang of and is quite punishing. no i frames on rolls with enemy unblockable attacks make it especially hard and wrong positioning could mean an unavoidable death if an enemy attack comes at the wrong place at the wrong time. the other gripes i didnt understand tho with the long run backs... in my run most of the boss fights had a save point bench near them and i didnt have to repeat common enemy encounters that locked you in the area untill they were killed. I did save the game after beating those common enemy encounters so maybe that played a role in avoiding repeat forced encounters? Maybe they patched it, pretty much all the boss fights had a save point 12 seconds away from them. with healing.. healing was less brutal than i thought, it seems slow but enemies actually can't kill you unless you are at extremely low health (screen turns black and white). if you heal just enough to get out that danger zone you can survive any hit, lets say you get hit for 1 health remaining, if you heal to above 25% and the screen colors become normal again you can live any hit. healing to full is what makes healing hard since attacks always two shot anyway untill you get better armor and healing to full is very slow. basically you can never get oneshot and never die if your above the low health threshold so you need to heal alot less than needed. dont get me wrong the game is insanely hard but i stuck with it till the end because i could get right back into the action right away and i could avoid losing by healing a little bit above the lowhealth threshold to avoid death.

Now, if only it wasn't published by EA. It sounds like it could be a fun game. I just deeply distrust EA to not try monetising the ever living F out of it.

I am really enjoying the game so far, idk if its the 100+ hours of monster hunter under my belt but the game definitely seems more approachable than monster hunter, all the systems from building to crafting etc are super streamline and nothing is particularly obfuscated. I am playing on PC and have had zero performance issues on 4k 60fps everything ultra but motion blur off, so whatever they did patch wise seemed to have worked. The steam reviews have gone from Mostly Negative at launch to Mixed now, mostly because so many people left negative reviews before the day one patch came out. I trust Koei and omega more than i distrust EA so am hoping everthing will get sorted so people can all experience the game as intended.

This game is more approachable than MH for sure. Sadly its because the combat is good and they made QoL changes MH really needs.

So the team behind this game also made the Toukiden games. I love Toukiden: Kiwami. I think about that game daily. That made me really excited for this game. Problem is, I don't care for any of the weapons in this game. And I learned my lesson from Ragnarök Odessey. Don't buy hunting game that seem to have lackluster weapons. And now I hearing of performance issues as well. I'm going to end up waiting on this game to get cheaper before even considering buying it.

Overall great review, but I do miss an anchoring point of sorts. I only know of and have played Monster Hunter worlds. So how something differs from the genre as a whole is difficult for me to grasp. Strictly speaking for me I would have liked comparissons between Monster Hunter and Wild Hearts, to highlight key differences and unique selling propositions. I assume EA doesn't want to give any free press to Monster Hunter, which works for anyone that doesn't know of Monster Hunter. TL;DR: Why should I buy this and not a Monster Hunter game?

If you're looking for a shield to tank behind, unfortunately you're out of luck for now. I think the devs wanted fast-paced combat to be the focus rather than turtling. Closest thing would be the umbrella, since that allows you to parry (and apparently later upgrades of the umbrella can increase your parry-window by up to 70%). Or, if you just want a spear/glaive of sorts, the karakuri staff has a transformation that turns into one.
