Our tax dollars are paying for these horrendous facilities?!?! I'm so upset by this
@curiouslook91156 жыл бұрын
This has been an issue for decades. the BLM is put into a really hard spot. The they breed uncontrollably and step onto non government lands, often cattleland. they have no natural predators, especially since wolfs have been hunted so heavily in this country so what do you do? kill them all? that was the first thing tried, but liberals and conservatives bulked with equal fervour. sterilize them all like dogs and cats? NOPE, congress passed a bipartisan bill preventing that and that says populations must be maintained, try to sell them all of or give them away for free? nope, not enough takers. so the government is left doing this, spending millions every year rounding up, feeding, and storing horses in coralls, and just giving away as many as possible. This is the only option left to the government, because we ended all the others.

It's the cattlemen who are infringing on the government land thus taking the space away from the wild horses! And a good many of them are mercilessly sent to slaughter! Also, the wolves are killed because of the ranchers/farmers! The problem is humans, not the animals. Plus eating meat quarantees to give you diseases, so stop munching on meat and let these horses roam free! Stupid humans!!!
@vladdracul50726 жыл бұрын
curious look There are many other options like bringing back the predators and leaving them and the prey animals alone in their parts of the land. But of course humans would have to give up some of their precious privileges, like granting land that was never theirs in the first place to other species, and themselves staying in small areas by themselves, like stop breeding and spreading out like locusts, and so on. So ask yourself, will that ever happen that mankind stops considering their own species the only one of more than 9 million species who has the rights to everything on this planet? I think not.
@curiouslook91156 жыл бұрын
I agree that use of cattle on public lands is out of hand, but that wouldn't solve the problem. they still would breed until they eat the public land dry, then start expanding to private land. eating veggies themselves can cause disease, its a pretty common occurance. finally, ecologically horses may not simply fit into modern america. The last native horses existed during the last ice age, and died when it ended (likely, in part, thanks to human arrival). Modern horses are from spanish exploration, and iceage predators that would have controlled populations do not exist today.

The land is likely needed to produce food, having horses there isn't great. So the government rounds the horses up and holds them till they can decide where to put them. 50,000 horses is a lot, you can't put them in a five star resort there's simply too many. And you can't let them roam free during their hold because you have to recapture them + they will breed more. Unfortunate situation but not alot of practical solutions.

@thatweirdnoiseintheattic6 жыл бұрын
No, the BLM is not selling land to ranchers. They're clearing the feral horses from PUBLIC lands, as in land that belongs to you or me or any American. That's what public land is. You and I have a vested interest in seeing feral horses cleared from public lands. That's right - feral. These aren't 'wild' horses. They're feral horses. Horses are a non-native, invasive species with no known predators. They're about as wild a species as cows, sheep or chickens. We just feel all mushy towards them because we hold them to the same domestic standard as dogs. Horses are incredibly destructive though. They trample entire prairies, eat down to the root, and forever scar the landscape. I love horses as much as the next basic white girl, but I also love environmentally pristine environments. Horses don't belong in American ecosystems. Period.
@Revelwoodie6 жыл бұрын
Jenny: While you are correct that horses are a non-native species (I think they've been here about...500 years maybe?), it isn't really accurate to say the round-ups are being operated out of a concern for maintaining "pristine environments." The BLM manages public land for our use, and by "our," the BLM means ranchers. If no one wanted to graze their cattle on that land, no one would care about the horses. This is evidenced by the fact that sheep also graze to the root, destructively, and once those horses are gone the most likely next use for that land will be grazing privately owned sheep. So clearly, protecting grass roots are not a top BLM priority. Besides, as non-native as they are, horses are an important part of American history and native cultural traditions. I agree that thousands of wild horses blanketing the prairies would be a bad idea, but there are plenty of places for wild horses to exist as preserve animals, under some population control. That's what they did in Britain, and the wild ponies there have created the unique look of one of the most beautiful forests you'll ever see, "The New Forest," and done so primarily via their destructive grazing habits. And Yes, I use the word "wild" deliberately. When an animal species has been living independently 500 or a thousand years from their domestic past, it's no longer accurate to call them "feral," in my opinion.
@jamesathersmith21916 жыл бұрын
revelwoodie I don’t think domestic horses have been running around America for 500 hundred years unless if forgetting how long ago the Europeans first found America.
@Revelwoodie6 жыл бұрын
Yes, James, horses were brought by the conquistadores of Spain, in the 1500's, I believe. Or I should say brought BACK, because horses are native to North America. In fact, that is where the species originally evolved. When Europeans brought horses back to North America, they'd only been extinct on this continent for about 10,000 years. They were possibly hunted by natives, but we don't really know why they disappeared.

I def agree with you though- beautiful, amazing story! These lovely creatures deserve so much more than the wretched lives they are being forced to live. But I have to disagree STRONGLY with your mom... No animal deserves to be sold off for labor or slaughter. We abuse the gifts we've been given on this Earth. I mean, think about it- if this planet is depleted of its natural resources, it'll be we humans, not any animals, that are the cause. We should be the ones corralled, not the horses...

I am glad these horses are doing well and it is sad other horses are in smaller pens but this is grossly oversimplifying the situation of wild horses. Within the last 10 years overgrazing has become a serious issue and many wild horses are starving to death and this also causes a ripple to the more native species as well such as gazelles, deer, buffalo, etc. So the government really is trying to prevent even worse situations for the environment. Could they do better? Absolutely. But this is not a black and white issue. I highly recommend reading the National Geographic Article "Wild Horses: The Consequences of Doing Nothing" Warning very sad pictures included.

Rackle Frackle What did these animals do before people came to be?
@racklefrackle52506 жыл бұрын
Well in this situation its hard to say as horses were first brought to the Americas by Spanish conquistadors in the 1500's, so they were never here before humans. In general though populations are/were kept in balance by natural predators and available food sources. If populations got too large they would eat all of the food and many of the population would starve. Some of the problems now are because the largest predators (wolves) have such small populations anymore. Honestly the entire delicate balance of the ecosystem is out of wack. And If people are calling for the governments heads now for rounding up horses. Imagine the outcry if they did nothing and all of the horses starved to death.
@tinawhite95226 жыл бұрын
I like the use of your words. Very wise. I mean that in a good way!
@glenbe40266 жыл бұрын
@Rackle Frackle. lol. a) Horse evolved in North America so they have certainly been there before humans (and it is probable that humans made them extinct in North America in the first place). b) Apparently the USA is some third world nation where privately owned cattle are allowed to graze on publicly owned land, whilst wild animals are rounded up to make sure there is enough grazing for these privately owned cattle.

Truck Taxi “wild” horses are just feral forms of the same species of domestic horse that is common throughout the world. Their genetics are very well understood in comparison to many other feral or wild animals, especially those which dictate coat color because they are used to help determine many important things about the horse. To simplify what I’m saying about this pair, a black horse can either have an EE or an Ee for the extension gene, and must have aa for the agouti gene. A chestnut horse must have ee with any combination of agouti. A black and chestnut horse can and will most certainly produce a chestnut foal, assuming the black horse’s genetics contain one dominant and one recessive allele for the extension gene. I believe it is safe to assume that yes, this is the case here, considering that stallions are known to kill foals that aren’t theirs.

Yes, particularly on public land used for cattle ranching (which itself it an entirely different issue), but even worse, if kept confined to a particular part of public land, they will eventually eat to much grass and starve to death. sterilization is definitely the best solution, and i think the BLM is aloud to do small scale sterilization, but the only real solution to the spending issue is mass/complete sterilization of the wild population, which is what the BLM really wants. the lack of predators mean the only population controls are food supply and human management. there was a real good article about the weird bipartisan nature of this issue, everyone seems to love horses but no one is willing to do anything reasonable about it.
@curiouslook91156 жыл бұрын
I agree sterilization is a good idea. I would also think that maybe adding wolfs as a natural population control method could “kill two birds with one stone”, but horses would need to be move far away from cattle ranchers for that to work at all.
