Of course I heard this on Dr. Demento like everyone else, but it always struck me as sad and mysterious. Later, I looked into Larry Fischer's life and understood why the song made me feel that way.

True story, I once requested this song for “The Dr. Demento Show”. Later on, he played this song & he said my name on the air. Another true story, the college radio station here in Amarillo carried “The Dr. Demento Show” for many years. When I started out in radio, one of my first shifts was engineering Dr. Demento on Saturday mornings.

I’m 67 now and was thinking of this song as an example of the weird stuff one could hear on Dr Dimento radio program as I talked with some of my adult children. (We were on our way to see Weird Al is how that came up.). Haven’t heard it since then but that shows you how this song can stick with you. I was so happy to see this posted and happy to see so many others remember it too. I didn’t know the artist or his back story but will now look that up. Thanks to poster and commenters.

@Malkmusianful Well, Larry could get very violent. There was the incident with his mother and the butcher knife. Frank had his own run in but he also talks about a time when Larry broke Bob (Fischer's) arm with a hammer. Not to mention all the threats and abuse he would hurl when he was on a downturn. I think Larry was a legit artist and intuited a form of song on par with what Van Gogh did for painting, but you got to see the whole picture and what his family also went through.

I think zappa learned a lot from larry, (like don't let insane people into your home) and what schizophrenia was. Larry was a classic skitz, try real hard be real but afraid of success. any time he got close he would lash out and attack or hold someone hostage, in a way to hold onto his insanity and be real.
