You definitely live in a beautiful area. We love going to Montana. Darby has been one of the places we've fallen in love with Thanks to a friend that loved it out there. He made me go spread some of his ashes in the Big Hole Valley near Van Houten. Once I saw it, I knew why he loved it and always get excited when we can go back. We'll be making our 6th trip to Montana soon and we can't wait. It's just breath taking every time.

This song is an ode to the Old American West and how it was. The boy in the song is the personification of the Old West. The ending verse explains the end of the west (Annexation of New Mexico and Arizona in 1912) and how people reacted. Some were glad the Wild West era was over (It was a violent and troubled time with gunfights, robberies, and drunk cowboys, not to mention the Indian Wars) but some will miss the era and the great heroes who lived in it.

Pierces my heart everytime I listen to it! There's something in the end... how Emmylou is nose-up on the "wild" then wheels-off on the "skies". Like it casts the song into infinity. I have this notion that folk driving through Montana on a clear night can hear this tune faintly in the sparking of the stars.

It's my favorite John Denver song. Emmy Lou Harris complements him perfectly on background vocals. Yes, as you said, it's a powerful performance which I believe snapped him out of that stale slumber of soft rock/folk/pop country, if only for a while. John sings about all the stuff that that is good and true about the land, and they're so deep and moving and beautiful, that you can almost see the things he is singing about! I have never liked modern music; it just doesn't carry the same power and beauty as the old songs, and is not expressing the things that should be sung about. Even though I'm 14 and - if I wasn't raised by older parents- would not even know about these amazing songs- I'd probably be listening to rap, heavy rock, and other "music"

I've read some posts below about Montana being like other places and not much different. 5th gen Montana boy here. Montana will always be different and grow moreso as this world see's no need to open a door for a gal or carry an old gal's groceries to her car. We live here and some were born here. There is a code you must abide by and respect. Some call that manners but in Montana the guy that doesn't do the above gets taken outside and taught manners.

Oh Anne, Most of us do. We love our country and its beauty. We love to see other countries and to hear how those living there appreciate THEIR countries, for each has a beauty of its own. Those of us who do not appreciate the beauty generally stay in the cities or the 'burbs where they feel more comfortable. Canada (Alberta) is equally as beautiful and perhaps more wild than Montana. You see, where ever we call home, we sometimes don't see the unique glories... it's just home. Come visit. We will talk and you can tell me of what makes your country unique and lovely. Cheers!
