Wild Parrots...in Brooklyn

There are lots of wild things in Brooklyn, NY, but did you know about the wild parrots? Several communities of Quaker Parrots (Myiopsitta monachus), believed to hail from the mountains of South America, are nesting in the New York area. So we asked Steve Baldwin, the creator of BrooklynParrots.com, to point out the parrots. He gives free group tours about once a month, if you're in the area....

I used to live in Windsor Terrace....and I remember clearly the first time I saw the parrots. It was surreal to the say the least....I thought I was hallucinating...

lots of parrots here in chicago on the southside in the hyde park area and jackson park golf range.Their ancestors escaped from the worlds fair held in chicago over 100 yrs ago originally from south america, they build these high rise nests and live communically.

Saw them in Juniper Park in Queens in 2011. I had heard the legend, but never seen them until then.

So they are surviving the winters in the Northeast? I don't live in Brooklyn or NYC at all actually, but I'm right through the tunnel in Jersey City and this has amazed me since the day I heard it. I've seen other invasive species thrive and survive outside their normal geographical location albeit in a similar habitat and climate. The parrots I always assumed would wither away in the winters here. This year was probably great for them because of the extremely mild winter we had.

yes even though i don't live in nyc i do know that the parrots did survive from various bird websites i looked up and so did the edgewater nj parrots and also i believe the wild parrots in connecticut survived as well, they probably had to rebuild their nests though due to the strong winds from superstorm sandy

There is a huge nest of them in Whitestone Queens. Never knew how wound up here. I’ve heard of a ship wreck in Milbasin Brooklyn in the 70’s and they’ve migrated here and as far south as The jersey shore. Anyone have any answers to this ? Or is it just malarkey?

The quaker parrots are from Argentina so they aren't particularly tropical

The Sidsters Matthew and Live rule they live in the subtropics where there are occasionally winters so they probably have methods of shaving off the cold
