I hope he's okay and can play the next game. It didn't look like Dumba aimed at his head, but I do think it was a bit late. I thought the Stars had a few borderline hits after that in response, particularly the Suter cross check on Kaprizov in front of the net, that they got some slack. Overall, the refs did a good job of allowing physical play without taking the game out of the players' hands.

Yes to all of that. It wasn't a dirty hit, but you don't want to see a guy actually KO'd out there who doesn't deserve it. Dumba will absolutely be targeted for the rest of the series, and he will deal with it, or else.

There’s a reason my bracket has the Wild winning this. Because Dallas has played chippy & borderline dirty for years, and while they manage to put up enough points to make the playoffs pretty regularly, it would be a rather gleeful moment to be knocked out in the 1st round by what amounts to one of the “dump teams” for the NHL (Arizona being the other one).

We need better announcers. There was a lot of talk about upward momentum and elevating, but I’m not sure that’s relevant here. When the players are skating toward one another that rule is easier to understand. In this case the players were skating in the same direction just prior to contact, and it’s pure shoulder on shoulder. Both players go flying after contact. If they’re going to have Dave Jackson on standby he needs to do a way better job explaining exactly what the rule is and how it applies in this instance.

Let's get a few things very clear: 1) The near referee turns away and doesn't see the hit. So the initial 5-minute major call must (we hope) come from the far official. 2) This was a shoulder to shoulder hit. As a 25+ year referee, there's no justification here for a major penalty. The far official either saw it wrong, or the near referee guessed wrong. Good thing there is review. 3) The argument "but it was late" is a weird one. The NHL rulebook defines "interference" as "The last player to touch the puck, other than the goalkeeper, shall be considered the player in possession. The player deemed in possession of the puck may be checked legally, provided the check is rendered immediately following his loss of possession." The statements: "the last player to touch the puck...considered the player in possession", "may be checked legally", and "immediately following his loss of possession" are CONTRADICTORY statements. According to the rule, Pavelski is considered "the player in possession" because he is last to touch the puck. And just because it's not on his stick, by this rule wording, doesn't mean he has "lost possession". According to wording of this rule, "loss of possession" would occur when another player (other than a goalie) touches the puck. But that's not how the rules are applied.. Something's off in the rules.

So I tried to get a stopwatch and time it to see how much time there was between the puck leaving Pavelski’s stick and the actual hit. I couldn’t get exact numbers every time but I usually got somewhere between 0.90 seconds and 1.02 seconds. I’d probably consider that to be a little late but it’s not so late that it’d be called interference everytime, it’s probably right at the edge of being interference. What is interesting is how the angle at 0:43 looks like it was sort of high but the other angles look like it’s shoulder on shoulder. From just a quick look it looked a little high on the angle at 0:43 but that could just be a result of the camera angle, but that one’s kinda up in the air. Idk, I think he probably could’ve gotten a 2min minor for interference but it definitely wasn’t a crazy dirty hit compared to a lot of others, so I’m not really bothered that they didn’t give him a penalty. That’s just my take.

Game 1 is the toughest one to win for any team. Like it or not it’s not going to be good to carry it over to the next game. The coaches know what they’re doing and don’t want to lose any of their players to injury or stupidity just to get back at the other team. I agree. His skates were on the ice when contact occurred. You're allowed a certain amount of time after someone releases the puck before you hit them. It was extremely clean. I'm not into the mindless violence or attempts to injure. I think it was a mistake to give a penalty. Are the fans officiating?

@@saschaganser9671 as a ref I do not always agree with the showy calls the NHL has a habit of making, however, this call there is no head contact and while yes one could argue it was late while watching it back in slow motion, in reality at full speed this hit is one Pavelski should expect to come. As a Wild fan, I will admit I've never been a big Matt Dumba fan. But that hit, it was clean. Despite being late, it's still shoulder on shoulder. Paveliski's head unfortunately hits the ice once again and he gets injured. I feel bad for Pavelski, but it's a clean hit. It just looked dirty because of how extremely fast-paced the game of hockey really is. Hopefully, Pavelski can heal quickly and return maybe later on in the series. You never want to see a good player get hurt due to hitting his head on the ice a 2nd time. Hopefully you'll heal, Joe.

Any hit to the head that shortens the career is dirty. It is shoulder to chin, with an upward movement. That's why he fall on his head. His head was up, the puck was gone, he couldn't protect himself because Dumba deviously arrives from behind the player that's already on Pavelski (blind spot). That's dirty.

Dallas fans can be as upset as they want. That's a clean hit and the right call on all fronts. Curious about the ruling on the misconduct, did he say 2 for roughing and 10 for continuing?? If so, I honestly think that's groundbreaking. I like it when a ref tells me WHY he's calling what he is. I may not always agree with the reason, but at least you're justifying your personal discretion (or explaining the rules, which most fans don't understand because the refs' interpretation of the rules has been inconsis... I'm rambling. Not worth it.) Hope more refs start doing this.

Agree 100%. Perfectly clean hit. Even the timing (after he got rid of the puck) is fine as per the rules. The ONLY issue is that they need to clean that up by changing the rule by not allowing that hit if the defenseman sees that the player no longer has the puck.
