By the early 1900s the wild turkey population throughout the country was nearly extinct due to over hunting and habitat loss. Some 50 years later thanks to vigorous trap-and-tranfer efforts and habitat recovery programs the species had recovered to about 6.5 million. This was an improvement but still a low number. By 2010 after countless recovery efforts the number may have reached eight million. State-by-state numbers vary greatly and some are in constant decline again. Here in Rhode Island as elsewhere wild turkeys have again become an important game species. Since 1980 the state has carried out several trap-and-transfer programs. Currently the Dept. of Environmental Management promotes a quality spring hunt and a healthy, self-contained turkey population throughout the state.
