Hi there from Christchurch. On the Pororari walk you don't have to walk 20kms to a hut and then 20kms back. There is a fork at one point. The inland pack track goes left to the hut mentioned and a couple of days beyond - only for the experienced tramper. For a pleasant 2-3 hours (depending on how long you spend looking at the scenery) you take the right fork which goes up and transitions to beech forest, over a sadde and down to regular scrubby regrowth on the other side. You can of course turn back, or continue to the Punakaiki river which is a shallow ford - maybe above the knees. The stones were slippery with green algae and the depth varies with rainfall. Take your shoes off and remember a towel. Find a stick to lean on. When you get back to the highway you are South of the Pancake Rocks and you just walk back along the road. A few kms North along the highway is the Truman Track on the left which is a nice walk down to the sea through some last remaining coastal forest. If you go at low tide you can go down to the sculptured rock section. Even farther North but not far is Cave Creek which you can drive to up Bullock Creek track which is a gravel road. There are platforms to look down into the caves from. If you ever do one on the Glaciers, Fox is the less busy and you can hear if not see Kea parrots. Nearby Lake Matherson is stunning. I've never been down to the beach but it's wild and out of the way. At night go South to the glacier river. On the other side of the bridge is a gravel road going left. There are millions of glow-worms in the bank - the hillside not the river side. You may have to go a little way up. Take a flashlight as it is dark. You won't see them with car lights on. There is also a small glow-worm grotto in Fox. Between Fox town and the glacier river is a lovely 20min walk called the Minnehaha. There is moss everywhere and the trees continually drip. You will expect to see Gnomes, Goblins, Fairies and Hobbits. It comes out farther South along the highway.

Lovely video! Greymouth/Hokitika has been my home for the past 20yrs - you did a great job of capturing much of our local environment (sunny weather certainly enhances this, the rumours about the rain are true.. haha). So glad you had a nice time here - haere mai, come back anytime :)

Another beautiful area! The drive along the coast looked a lot like the Malibu coastline when it was undeveloped and still part of the large spanish ranches. Viewing from Seattle.
@GrowingUpWithoutBorders4 жыл бұрын
Anytime there a road along the coast line like that it’s my favorite part of the trip. Just taking in the views. Does Seattle have any drives like this?
@brianwhite11894 жыл бұрын
@@GrowingUpWithoutBorders There are beautiful, scenic drives near Seattle, but none that really follow a coastline like this. Lots of incredible views of the Puget Sound and Olympic Mountains though. I've yet to explore the West coast of Vancouver Island, which is supposed to be incredibly beautiful.

Thanks for visiting home.... Revvingtons and Waitaki house has now been pulled down as will the other old buildings as they are not much more than 20% of the new building standard and that means if you are inside during "the big one" you might not survive. As the buildings are on leasehold land there is not much appetite to restore or rebuild. I hope you enjoyed the flood wall walk and saw the miners memorial.

One lane bridges are because when the roads were built anywhere remote in New Zealand they were only ever made as access roads and bridges, and mainly for horseback or horse-drawn wagons. No-one on the coast thought there would be a time when there would be 2 motorised vehicles passing each other let alone on a bridge!!. It's most noticeable in South Westland as that's our last untouched wilderness but you will find them on a lot of country back roads all over New Zealand. Just remember the bigger of the signpost 2 arrows has the right of way. Enjoy your travels!!

A lot of those old buildings in greymouth have been declared an earthquake hazard and as such will be pulled down because they will be to expensive to bring up to standard, the Revington Hotel has already been removed
