Gorgeous tarp set up with external poles - perfect ! To make it easy to lash 3 poles, lay them parallel to each other flat on the ground. Lash all three together but laid out flat. Lash thed lashings between the poles, then stand the tripod up. Moving the poles out to the required angle tightens the lashing. Proper hurricane lamps are awesome - a gentle pool of light. Great for walking by & heat as well - perfect. I think the one you had was just a cheap copy for effect not use.

Thanks Chas that's really helpful, I'm gonna try this next time I make a tripod :D (and also I need to learn how to lash properly, I just make it up at the moment haha). Gonna pin this for anyone else who might find it useful :) Yehh I looove the feel of the lamps 😍This one was rubbish, I agree although it is sold as a functional lamp it's not fit for purpose at all! Thanks for the tip and for watching my lil viddy, have a great week! 🌿Claire

Is that a 3x3 tarp? If so,you can fold the back under to make a ground sheet,,you dont lose any room

@@scrum5atk1 this one is 3 x 2.9 so close enough, but not enough to alow cover the ground in this configuration. It can be done in other configurations :)

Well , young lady you have managed to make another wonderful vid of your adventures . Be careful with the lamps . Should they tip over they will spill the fuel and start a terrible fire . Be very careful hanging them . They put out a lot of heat and never hang them from any type of cordage , it will burn it or melt it . Make a short hanger from a metal coat hanger .Your photography is very good especially of the bugs . Ok now for the important stuff. Your smile brightens the entire vid .Thank you for sharing your adventures . Stay safe .

Nice one Claire, but I'm going to nag you again. Learn the tripod lashing, it's super easy to do and has many uses around camp. Tripods are sturdy and reliable support structures and have many uses from ridge pole supports to over the fire cooking stands, game skinning etc. One of the real bonuses and joys of bushcraft/survival/camping, is learning new skills which make your outdoor experiences, much more pleasurable and rewarding. Just saying. :))

Hei. Luonto on täälläkin hyvin kaunis. Meillä on tapana kerätä roskia luonnosta ,eikä myöskään leiriytymisestämme jää mitään jälkeä. Valitettavasti uusi öljylamppusi ei toiminut. Kiitos Sinulle ja iloiset terveiset täältä Suomesta. t.Juha❤

Claire, the greatest respect to you. You show immense bravery in what you do and are such a huge inspiration to all. You show women and young girls that they can achieve anything in a masculine defined world. A woman, wild camping on her own in the woods, a woman scrambling over loose shale and rocks! Preposterous man!! You, my young lady are a light of hope in this ugly world. Your humble, you recognise your own shortcomings, but don’t let them define you. Often you will say, “I could have done this or that better” but guess what, there are no ‘ifs or buts’ with you, you just dust yourself down and get back out there and do it. I recently watched your 3 day Snowden video and was in awe of you, likewise with your cave camping, which you labelled a fail. That wasn’t a fail, that was heroic. If any young girls, single mums, survivors of domestic abuse or any females with poor mental health need some inspiration and a reason to live or stand up to their abuser, they need look no further than yourself for inspiration. You should be commended for your tenacity, your never say never attitude and your ability to turn a negative experience into a positive one. Well done Claire 👏👏👏👏 I await your next adventure with anticipation. Meanwhile back to my grandchildren and showing them what they can achieve in life through hard work and determination. The world needs more ClaireBeare’s 🙅🏻‍♀️💚

Ahh wow thank you so much, what a lovely comment! A lot of people say they think I'm brave, in truth I'm more comfortable doing these things than 'normal' things that other people can do easily.. I can struggle in busy places, noisy places, big groups of people, some social situations etc. Nature feels like home to me, an escape from all that and it's a great place to push myself a bit, learn new things and take time away from modern life. And just be immersed in beautiful and rugged things, there's nothing like it 💚 I really appreciate you coming along on my lil journeys, I truly love both the adventures (big and small!) and creating videos of them, so I'm very grateful that they're well received ☺ Wishing you a wonderful weekend! 🌿 Claire

A nice fast way to tie a tripod together like that is to line up the three sticks together and wrap them with some cordage (you can even have a finished loop of cordage on you) and then flip the middle stick around 360 degrees lengthwise and it will put some real tension on the cordage and make the whole construction sturdy.

Ive got several oil lamps and a few lanterns like you have. Never heard of the oil catching like that. Unless you had too much oil in it but I doubt that is the case. Back when I camped t usually had candles for light and a flash light for the just in case. Haven't camped in a tent since I was in my 30s. I have built an off grid cabin where I live. Sure it's close to the house but it's still tucked away in a young forest behind my house. Ive got solar (around about 68 watts) a generator and an extension cord for grid power for a small dorm style fridge.

Carrying a couple of 100mm x 6mm SS rings saves on a lot of tripod lashings in bushcraft. Great bits of kit, so many uses. Using a 4.5m x 3.0m tarp allows a molded floor for your tarp tent, great when its wet and when there are heaps of creepy crawlies. That extra 1.5m gives you a lot more tarp options. lol. Love the hiking boots, I have the same brand, warm, sturdy, light and waterproof. 🙂

My grandparents used oil lamps and lanterns ALLOT while I was growing up..... I used to help them replace the wicks and fill them up from time to time. We'd use them during power outages and during winter when we'd go out to get firewood for the stove at night. I burnt a wick up once. My Papa told me you have to let them soak for a while before lighting them. The wick should be moist to the touch before lighting. I'm not sure if you just got a bum lantern or perhaps the wick wasn't "quickened" as he called it! I'd definitely attempt the next burn outside when you test it out (this one or a new one). That's another thing he always made us do.... test the lamps/lanterns outside.... just incase the wick wasn't right or the lamp malfunctioned when using them after refilling/replacing.

Tripod lashing: place three poles side by side. Move the middle one so it sticks out past the other two, leaving only twice the length of the sticky up top bits inbetween the other two poles. Measure down one sticky up bit length; this is where you'll lash. Start with a clove hitch on one pole then lash the three together, weaving the cordage in and out of the poles. Tie off. Stand the poles up and form the tripod. Love your videos.
