A Bastokan, a San D'Orian, a Windurstian and a guy from Jeuno are on the airship. The Bastokan takes a subligar and says "we have way too many of these" and throws it over the edge. The San D'Orian grabs a Rabbit Hide and says "we have way too many of these" and throws it over the edge. The Windurstian grabs a Yagudo Feather and says "we have way too many of these" and throws it over the edge. Even the voice chosen for this makes it sound like a narration from a 2000s game trailer "relatable young American dude". One thing that's never coming back from pre-WoW MMOs is just grouping up with a bunch of random people to level on grinding monsters and stay safe, where the world feels dangerous. Once you can solo, people don't want to play together unless it's important. That old reliance on each other is something I miss but it's dead and gone, now you have trusts who act as other players. Similar thing happened to GW1 when they added Heroes in Nightfall expansion, people no longer grouped for most activities. Alone in an MMO whilst surrounded by other players.

This game is always on my mind played back ~2003 when I was in High School and it was my first MMO. Everyone was so nice and helpful when it was time to get my sub job quest items (which required going to higher level areas back then) a higher level white mage helped for 3 hours straight because the drop rate was so bad. Never experienced anything like that community ever again.

Valkurm Dunes, keeping that gobbie train at the entrance to the town. I think mobs slowly despawn now but they used to slowly walk back to their spawn location. Had to rely on people in shout chat to tell you if there was an ambush party waiting for newbie players, with some high levels hanging around the area to kill off the mobs. I sometimes lurked in the area to power level friends and answer raise requests. Still proud to this day I made it policy to never charge to raise anyone.

Horizon id say is actually better because in essence it does capture the nostalgia but it has things that make the progress less time consuming. As far as the community, it’s great. People partying it up and the server is still somewhat young so lower levels should still be viable

ive been gaming since the snes launched and FFXI still stands tall as the greatest game ever made. those of us who were there in its prime know and every game ive played since then has only been a shallow attempt to recapture that feeling. only dark souls and monster hunter have come close. Ramuh server 2002-2007, SAM/WAR Nogren 😢

ive okayed this since beta on PC. my buddy worked at gamestop and got the pc beta disks but didnt have a computer so he gave them to me... they barely saw me for the next 7 years lol, but i still had to play it for months and years after off n on. Now on a private server, i still love the poop out of this game, it will forever be in my heart, best game IMO.

Played this from its NA PC release 'til a little bit after the first Abyssea release (which changed the way people played it to something I didn't enjoy anymore). So many fun memories. I'm glad I got to enjoy it before they decided to try and "make it more accessible", which basically killed the grouping aspect. Everything became "just hit level cap and solo it". I don't play a MMORPG to play solo.

1:06 20 years ago? Holy cow that is how long this game has been out for. I remember getting it on pc in fall of 2003. I did not like it much so I stopped not long after that. But then much later in life... I had a feeling. An itch to try the game out, In 2021 I started to play a 75 era classic server and it was so F'in good, I loved it. I really wish I put in more time into the game back in 2003. I wish I could go back and redo things in my life. Hindsight is 20/20 I guess.

I have many memories of FFXI. Sadly a lot negative. For example how I found out there is a bug on spirits that make their spell counter reset if you attack, but it doesn't reset if you get aggro. So to effectively use spirits you had to go get aggro first so they could insta-cast. But despite reporting the bug, Square never bothered to fix it because in their opinion "Nobody uses spirits", but that is because "Spirits are bugged and need fixing". So it was a catch22 of them refusing to fix a bug that prevented the use of something that they found to not be used. It also felt like square was too much focused on lore. I mean why should an avatar you summon drain MP while not engaged in battle? Well, it makes sense from a lore perspective that you are maintaining a connection with them and it drains your mp. But for gameplay? That just means standing there with an avatar is a negative experience of the game. I felt like making avatars cost nothing while not fighting would have allowed people to just enjoy the game more, and have fun, instead of suffer from lore choices. It was also rather annoying how all summoner gear felt like bug fixes. -BP timer? Well, not needed if it was reduced to a reasonable number to begin with. +summoning skill? Minor impact most of the time, and never really boosted damage. -perpetuation cost? Well, it is like I'm being punished less to play the class, but it never makes it better. Another part that drove me nuts was every gear being situational. So I needed macros to do it for me. When I BP, I needed -BP gear, when the skill activated I needed +summoning skill, inbetween that I needed -perpetuation cost, and when it was weather effects I needed my weather gear, and when I had to rest MP I needed my MP resting gear. I think I covered 80% of my inventory with just gear to handle all those unique cases. Despite all that negativity, I'm weirdly tempted to play Final Fantasy XI again. But it really requires the server to have improved summoner gear and skills, or essentially have a built in 3rd party automation macro tool.

i miss the game played on ps2 till the announcement service for it was being dropped in the us as much as id love to play on pc having to restart or do private server and command stuff in to get myself back to where i was it would never be the same it was a grand frustrating and crazy time i had w the game hell idk if id even be able to get my old acct back if i played again given my acct had my fams name on it since i was a teen when i started and the emails all associated with it are all gone although i do have my security token still and it still works but at the same time idk of there was ever a way to transfer from console to pc

in the earliest days of FF11, DRG was very popular because multihit weapon skills would give full TP on each hit, and the slower your weapon, the more TP it gave. so dragoons could spam Penta Thrust in battle frequently and were quite popular. this was nerfed very quickly - subsequent hits would give minimal TP, and DRG fell out of favor very quickly cos it just wasnt as powerful as other melee jobs. it was nearly impossible for them to get invited to EXP parties. also, for the longest time, the DRG 2hr ability was Call Wyvern, which was pretty useless cos all it did was summon a pet to fight with you, which would die to AoEs most of the time.

lol drg came from prior to late toau and post it its best ws were multi hit which were bad vs endgame monsters and gave the enemy a fuck ton of tp to use their own skills to possibly merc you also alot of drgs used non optimal subs and tried to dodge bad attacks w jumps and died this loldrg was born and they still do it in 14 lol drg for leveling or dealing w trash ads was solid had some support options and decent solo or low pt count setups at various levels also the 2hr being resummon pet for so long was a thing it got memed on
