I get around the repetitiveness of random events by leaning into what the game mainly offers-- character. When you go through an event, the characters are still new, and they might make different choices than others would. Random chances are different. You might succeed at something you previously failed, or vice versa. And with legacy characters and relationships, you can see how old characters interact with the new. It's really all quite brilliant.

Its good except when ypu get children that are older than the parents. Obviously this is a bug, not a bug generated by faulty syntax but by logic(it gives a "correct" product, simply not the "desired" product).

The hero development in this game is absolutely incredible. The randomness is also great because you never know which direction a character goes into. Your warrior might end up being hyper-mobile, a slow paladin-style tank or ranged. Your mystic might become a transformed spell slinger, a buffed up melee DD or a support tank. Hunters could lean into DoT-AoE, become a single-target burst combatant or high/short range assassin. And all of that with really unique stories to each character. I can recall the history of heroes I played dozens of hours ago in my very first campaign. And the great thing is that you can take your interesting legacy-cast of characters and continue playing/developing them in future campaigns. It's such a fun system!
@Alister2222222 жыл бұрын
I haven't played the game, but I get the feeling you hit the nail on the head with the randomness being about shutting down min-maxing. If you had full control over your character development, and gearing, all your characters would tend to converge on the same few meta builds. The randomness will force you to play with what you get, and adapt to how things happen.
@principleshipcoleoid80952 жыл бұрын
Meta players do use legacy hero system to play 100 starting calamities WL CiS (max difficulty) games. There is a saying that at 85% optimisation even that is winnable. And people find unusual builds that are on par with power of well known meta builds

I remember I had a character in my first campaign called torkhel or smth of the sort: he was a warrior and my favorite character, he always fought at the front and killed his enemies and as a result I gave him the best items out of all the group: during the final confrontation with the final boss of the campaign the whole party basically died during the fight,trying to sacrifice themselves to do as much damage as possible to this boss…except for this specific warrior…I was resigning myself to having to either save scum or start another campaign when something amazing happened: this warrior which had a very low HP and was about to die… did a very unlikely critical strike on the final boss…and he won…this moment alone made me love this game…it looked like something out of a farytale or anime…he became my first legacy character and i reincarnate him in every campaign I do now…he never disappoints always dying by sacrificing himself to save the party or dying to the evil boss at the end…sometimes he gets to retire and live a happy life…he’s growing to be the max rank of legacy character soon! Man I love this game!

I really enjoyed my first few playthroughs of it. I do admit the art style is not for everyone but it has its own charm. I really do hope some developers take some notes on some of the "relationship" aspects of this game though because it was a refreshing experience to have rivalries and relationships between party members. The cliche lover is obvious, but things like the loving father/daughter, or the 3 generations of grandmother, father and daughter moments or the jilted father/step-son scenes were really well thought out and fit so perfectly. The transformations too were interesting (First one was an unlucky moment for the ranger where the statue exploded an a crystal was embedded into her eye, in which she turned into a crystallian).

I really learn to respect games that don't need your attention for 100+ hours (or pretend to, using excessive padding). Enjoying a unique take on mechanics, game-play and even art style for 20-30 hours is something that I do tend to appreciate more and more. Disco Elysium took not much more than 20 hours to play. All-times masterpiece. WIldermyth is great that way.

I'm about 50 hours in right now, and while there is definitely a lot of repetition, I'm still finding new/interesting events quite often. Also, some events only occur if a character has met certain conditions in previous campaigns. For example, I had a character get possessed by a ghost and develop a rivalry with another character in one campaign. A couple campaigns later, the rival character finally realizes what's happening, and convinces the ghost character to come with him on a "hunting trip" where he acquires a really powerful magic sword that dispels the ghost. He then got to keep the sword for future campaigns, which is amazing because it's one of the best artifact weapons I've found so far.

I really like this game. I especially like the magic system, where you have to infuse with things on the map to cast spells. Shame you didn't mention that at all, as I think it's a pretty unique way of approaching magic. Apart from that though: Nice review :)
@changsiah22 жыл бұрын
cool but my only complaint it's not real magic to be honest real magic and the only just fuse life spirits and that's it I prefer having them healer class as well as a paladin class and then actual met Mage class to be honest I prefer casting reels fire as well as able to cast other elements like ice or water and also have more classes
@michaelorford8304 Жыл бұрын
I agree, Rasmussen. I loved the magic system. It was the most original that I have seen. I have always thought that magic was one of the weaknesses of a lot of games (D&D for instance) and also of a lot of books. One problem with a lot of magic systems is that if magic is so powerful then why aren't magical duels extremely short? There are some problems with the magic system such as that a few of the magic spells allow for gimmicky, non-interesting ways to solve some situations but overall I was thrilled.

I personally loved the story book asthetic, also enjoyed the randomness made certain things more exciting. This coming from someone who tends to love planning out characters and parties in extreme detail, but with this game I found it a nice change of pace from that part of my mind. That being said it would be nice if they had the option to turn the RNG on and off, and I don't see a reason to not have it like that.
@suzanner83602 жыл бұрын
I am playing this right now. I like the randomness of the abilities & equipment. As someone who sometimes agonizes too much over the correct build and equipment, it’s refreshing to have less control over that aspect. The art style was fine. You are right on target about the characters. I have gotten attached to some of them and if they die I am sad. 🙂
@GamerSerg742 жыл бұрын
Agreed. This is not a game where you plan every detail of your build before you even start. Its all about how you never know what life is going to throw at you and you have to make the best from the opportunities life gives you. Often leading to something great you never would have imagined possible.

I'm so glad you reviewed this title, I also was a bit put off by the art style initially (which is funny because I'm not a graphics guy, either). Since you're into TRPGs, you might find The Banner Saga interesting. The decisions carry over throughout the games and recall the combat system having a reasonable amount of depth. I'm sure you've got quite a list of games to try, but I think you'd be well served to play it some day.

I really liked the idea of this game way more than its execution. There was too much randomness for me as someone who enjoys finely tuning character builds, time passed too quickly since I wanted more time with the characters I was seeing developed, and I didn't like being punished for slow playing which is my preferred playing style for pretty much everything

The biggest addition I'd love to see to this game would be more detailed locations. It's a cool system to open up a new town every chapter, but all the towns are the same and almost nothing happens in them.

It's funny how different things appeal to different players. While you disliked the randomness of the skills you can obtain, for some reason I liked it. I suspect I might be in the minority there but I kind of like not having full control of how my characters develop. It almost feels like they're more than just an extension of my desire and requires me to adjust a little to "who they are". Also the art style is weird to me. See, normally it's a style that would put me off but for some reason in this game... it just works. It's like Ben and Jerry's ice cream. Who the hell puts some of that crap together into one product and ISN'T high? Yet somehow... it just works. ;)

I played it on release and really enjoyed the experience. But after 20 hours (and two or three completed campaigns) it ran out of steam for me. Thanks for the review! After a few campaigns you definitely start to see some repeat events. I didn't think that would be a huge deal at first, but it really took me out of it for some reason. That, combined with the gameplay loop getting fairly repetitive once you get to the late 2nd or 3rd campaign. In the end however, I really enjoyed playing it for about 30 hours, so I can't really complain about value.
@minaly222 жыл бұрын
I really loved some of the more innovative ideas of the game. Like wizards using furniture to use their 'magic', this is even lampshaded and made fun of in-game during a random event dialogue that was on the lines of "While we fighters enjoy the glory of battle up front, someone is communing with furniture at the back..." ; this was my favorite line in the game. However there are a lot of frustrating elements of the game. I especially dislike all kinds of 'old age/passing the torch to the next generation' mechanic, not just in this game but in all others (including Venus & Braves, Oreshika series).

I must admit that tRPGs isn't my preferred type of game, but the procedural generated story idea is very interesting. I'm very curious on how much depth they achieve. I suppose I'll have to check it out. WOuld be interesting to see more games with procedurally generated stories. It's a shame that Evodant Interactive never managed to launch their idea of Gyre Maelstrom with some sort of narrative engine, like a programmed Dungeon/Game Master. Would have been interesting to see what they could achieve. Although I must admit that they took an interesting, although not a "safe bet" setting.

As someone who finished all 5 story campaigns, it's definitely a good game but my main problems are the event repetition (there simply arent enough for 30+h of playtimes) and that the writing style is a bit too quirky at times. I often felt that the writer (Especially douglas) always had a thesaurus out and wanted to pick the most unusual variations for each word.

Ultimately, I don’t think I liked the implementation of Legacy characters. Once I realized you’re basically “New Game +”-ing them and having them de-age with every new campaign was…not what I expected. I never felt the desire to reuse old characters after this and alter what I already thought was a complete story for them.

Now this is making me think you should try Battle Brothers. The gear and combat system are almost precisely the opposite. But it does a lot of emergent storytelling and the "crisis" system seems similar to the incursion system in this game. I would call it a cross of Darkest Dungeon and XCom.

Great review, agree on all points. The mods do add some options for more character leveling/abilities control, which can be fun. There are some positively abusive to the point of hilarious strategies possible with either a bit of luck or the free skill reroll mod. My favorites involve giving your warrior type bonuses that expand their Attack of Opportunity/Threat/Guard distance-range and number of AoOs to the point that any monsters who pass have to get hit multiple times. Pairs well with the "force monster to move where you tell it to" magic ability and a fine Chardonnay. Also fun: the return fire style Hunter ability that lets you shoot any enemy that shoots an ally standing by you. My first purchase is the most expensive bow on that Hunter. Poor bad guys keep getting crit-ed by disgruntled lover archer :)

My biggest problem was that the roguelike approach doesnt work great. There just isn't enough branching events in each campaign to start from scratch over and over. I ended up save scumming after seeing the exact story three times. I like most of the art style, the paper cutouts are cute and transformations look cool and wouldn't work in 3D. My only complaint are the faces which are over simplified and quickly look generic. My second biggest complaint was the writing style. I just thought everything was to quippy like so many other games out there. I think a more fairytale or epic poem style would have worked better. Maybe skip dialog and have just a narrator instead. To me characters all just seemed to talk the same way.

I like how characters find items, and when they wear or use them you see it on their character, even in the story cutscenes. You can't pass items between characters, which is bad for strategy but it does make the characters and items seem more distinct. It would be good if you could will your item to any children you have. That would make sense. But no passing items around for min-maxing, which is ok with me.
