Kingsley North is a lapidary store in Michigan's U.P. They make a great cab machine and sell many other brands too. They have a huge selection rough rock, tumblers, grit, jewelry supplies etc. at good prices. I buy most of my coarse grit from here in 45 lb. bags. It's the best price I have found. If you buy using the following link, I make a small commission.

As the owner of one of your pendants, I have to disagree...you are very good at making them. I've never liked wire wrapping because it usually looks chintzy, but my petoskey stone pendant is beautifully made. Your attention to detail shows in all your work. The stone you showed us today is lovely. Too bad you had to cut it down.

I'm pretty happy with how my wraps turn out, but I'm not very adept at handling the wire because I don't make that many of them. What I meant is that I'm not a good person to show wire wrapping technique. I guess I wasn't very clear in the video, but I threw that first cab into the tumbler. The second one was from a different slab.

You're so lucky to have all that beach to search. I walk my dogs in the city gravel pit and still come home with cool rocks in all my pockets, but it's just not the same 😪😊. Will any lake do, or is just the big (Great) lakes? I'm so jealous 🙂 I've been dropping hints all over the place for my two sons that I want a rock tumbler... maybe for Christmas. I'll be binge watching your channel when I get one, even if I have to get my own. Thanks for sharing.

Great Lakes beaches in Michigan are considered state land, so you can walk as far as you want once you get to the beach. Inland beaches are owned by whoever owns the lakefront property, so you can't walk just anywhere on inland lakes. The rocks should be about the same on either inland or Great Lakes beaches in the same area.

Awesome video beautiful work. Thank you for showing your work. The fossiliferous term means full of fossils. I have several beautiful stones I have put in my tumbler. I didn't know at the time they had fossils in them. Or I would not have wasted my time. It was only one or two not a whole batch. The jasper shines up great but, those fossils keep from getting a really nice shine over all of the rock. I am moving further north in Texas for a bit. Then on to Utah in the spring. I am excited to get a chance to explore this winter. I live in South Central Texas. So our winters are a crazy mix of warm one day freezing the next. 🙃☕❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Your videos have provided me with a great many tips and useful ideas for making pendants on my own channel. One thing that I do when preparing to groove my rock is use the marker on the blade. Cut a groove on any rock and measure your depth with your wire. Once the depth is good, turn the grinder off and place your stone against the blade. Put your marker on the blade at the edge of the rock. Remove the rock and turn the blade on briefly. This creates a black line on the blade that you can use for future grinds that will always be deep enough for your wire. Great stuff! Love your videos!
@MichiganRocks

That's a good idea, but as the bit wears, you'll have to move your line.

I really enjoyed both parts! The rock you made the pendant from looks a lot like what would be called a prairie agate in other states. The slabs are beautiful from it and the pendant is gorgeous! Love the amazing shine you put on it too. I like the size it ended up being very much, I like a bit smaller jewelry. You could definitely make a smaller round or square pendant out of the banding from the the slab with the fracture, or even a matching pair of smaller oval earrings. Great video Rob, thanks for sharing!✌️🤠🤘
@MichiganRocks

The successful cab was from the slab with the fracture. The first one is currently in my tumbler. You're right about making smaller cabs, I should do that more. I find it easier or maybe more enjoyable to make the bigger cabs, so that's what I usually end up doing. I also need to start mixing up the shapes more often.

Rob, the round shoreline depression you found at Waugoschance Pt was the result of WWII training based in Traverse City. They trained aircraft carrier pilots as well as the first radio controlled drone aircraft pilots. They did live bombing flights in 1943-44 from there using the Pointe and the lighthouse as primary targets, some of the drones had 2000# live bombs to simulate actual conditions. Most of the flights were done at night. Some bombs actually landed in the Pte Aux Chene area in the UP. There was one in front of my sons cottage along US-2.

That's really interesting. I'm surprised that something like that would last that long with all the big storms and ice moving around during that time. I had no idea they dropped live bombs right along the water like that.

I wish I was that seagull and I could fly over one of my favorite areas of Michigan; The Mighty Mac! She's so marvelous. And so was that pendant. I'd write more but now I have to go back and watch your 2 other videos on jewelry making. Peace be with you, my KZbin friend. ps...when did you film this? Still looked like summer, but without the Fudgies
@MichiganRocks

There was a couple sitting on the beach right by the parking lot when I got there. Other than that, not a fudgie to be seen (except me, I suppose). I filmed this on September 14. I have been a little ahead on videos up until recently. Next week's video was filmed yesterday and I don't have anything for the following week yet. I flew the drone when I was finished with the rest of the video. After walking out the point and seeing those fun bays, the other side of the point and the ponds up on the beach, I was pretty excited to get that thing up in the air. I wasn't disappointed in the shots I got.

The fossil at 3:19 is a fovosite too. I can see the structure when you showed a side view of it. I have some just like it that were dry finds in the tailings from farmers fields. I think I was told they were calcified. They are sun bleached, brittle and sparkley. I can send pics and even a couple of samples for you if you like.

I think they're probably silicified rather that calcified. Most fossils around here, like Petoskey stones, are made of limestone which is mostly calcium. They're really soft. But I find some Petoskey stones that are as hard as jasper or agate. They look like the favosites you were talking about, white and sparkly when dry. I believe that type of Petoskey stone was replaced by silica. Thanks for the ID by the way. Sometimes I'm just not sure what I'm finding.

@@MichiganRocks I’ve only ever searched the area where the campground is just because we camp there every year. I’m definitely going to look at others areas like where you were. We’ve never explored farther down the road into the park down by the cabins.

@@debbypetty8685 I parked in the parking lot as far up the point as I could get. You have a pretty good idea of where I was from my drone shots. The guy in the little camping registration hut (is there a name for that?) told me that there's also a spot to park on the other side of the point, but he thought the rocks might be better where I went. He didn't sound like he got too many rock hunting questions though.

If you look on Google Earth you can still spot them, about 1/2 mile east of Pt Aux Chenes River in the UP there are two about 100' apart just west off the tip of the small island tip. There are more if look closely in the Waugoschance area.

Quite a while if I'm filming it. Maybe a couple hours if I'm not. I don't really keep track of my time. Usually I'll make several at once which cuts down on the time per pendant.

@@MichiganRocks , understood. With the weather as nice as it was these last few days, you could have fooled me by just saying “ Yeah.” But my appreciation holds. I am, as always, impressed by your adventures to our shores. With my young children, other hobbies, and mostly my wife working a new 2nd shift position, I haven’t seen the beaches as much this summer. But don’t despair, I haven’t been completely complacent. With my new lightweight waders and felt bottom wader-overshoes, I still have some time left for near shore hunting, more still come early spring! As always, Nancy and you continue to inspire! Thanks for the good works and stay safe!

Great video. That was a very cool rock and the pendant turned out very nice. I got the first batch going in the new Lot-O this evening. @MichiganRocks Жыл бұрын
@@oldjohnnyrude8404 That looks a little slow. Your slurry looks perfect though. I'd try to adjust it while it was running with a full load of rocks. Just move the dowel enough to get the rocks rolling a little bit faster.

@@MichiganRocks That's exactly what I was thinking. The 500 AO is moving a bit better, but could still be a bit faster. I'll probably run this batch out as it is then tune it with the next full load of rocks. Thank you for the input. 👍

@@MichiganRocks Thebactin slowed way down after a full day and I couldn't take it anymore after 2 days. I moved the dowel toward the frame of the tumbler a bit and it seems to be happy pretty close to the 2cm mark as yours was. I moved it slightly closer and the noise increased without much improvement in tumbling action. I moved it back to about 2.2cm and it slowed down some woth not much difference in sound from the 2cm mark. It seems happy there and it has run there for the past day. I will probably glue it back down at this position but is have left it movable for the time being until I run another batch starting at 220 grit. Anywhoo, I'm happy so far.
