Great review. Is this a good daytime camera ? Can I grab it and quickly use it to see something one or two city blocks away? Or would it always needs a tripod ? Thx

You can use them like regular binoculars in daytime and take a picture or video at the same time, but really zoomed way in they will be a bit shaky handheld unless you have a steady hands.

can you use this without taking a picture or video? Do you have to use one or the other or is there just a viewing mode without taking a video or picture?

Sure, it is always in the default viewing mode. only if you want to take a picture or video do you have to set a mode and push a shot button. BB
