Those river rock slabs are ideal for making stone walkways kinda like laying commercial pavers around decks and porches. A river rock path out to Thor's Red Oak makes an easy stroll for the gnome!

James, beware of procrastination through excessive activity. It's a common pitfall. Prioritise your life-support work before winter arrives. As I've mentioned repeatedly, a house needs to breathe, so please install proper ventilation. We don't want to see headlines about a KZbinr succumbing to CO2 poisoning due to inadequate airflow. Proper ventilation also helps reduce interior mould. Consider using Reflectix instead of sheep's wool for the door. It's thinner and lighter. For the doorway area, take inspiration from Antarctic and Arctic dwellings: create a porch-like space for storing damp gear and cold-weather kit. As you lack a porch or airlock to prevent cold air ingress, consider using steel pipes to create a thick, shower curtain-like barrier inside the door. This heavy curtain reduces draughts when entering or exiting and provides a changing area for wet or snow-laden gear. In summer, you can tie it up. Royal Navy ships still use this technique on cold expeditions, which is where I learnt it. On your trail to the car park, nail markers at head height on trees to denote the path. This aids others in finding you during emergencies. Lastly, review your footage from last winter to gauge snow height. You may need to protect the house's footings with gaiters. Your progress looks splendid, but please prioritise life-support projects while time allows. Examples include: Installing a water butt Building a log store Constructing a raised platform for solar panels, with hard-wired connections to the house for charging your battery banks You're doing an excellent job overall. Keep up the good work, but remember to focus on these crucial preparations for the winter ahead.

@@Rockhopper1 excellent advice. Living in oz no such extreme weather. I just hope wood fire installed asap. Agree a porch needed even if only to store dry wood. But agree lots of wet snow gear could cause mouldy atmosphere

Yes!!! This, so much this. Once winter is upon you things will be much more difficult. It makes me cringe not seeing a wood pile close. It nice to be able to buy wood cut and split but you should always have a few cord extra in case you can’t get it from someone else. I lived for a year cooking on a wood stove very similar to the one you just bought and I always needed kindling and small wood to get the fire started after I got home from work with 3 hungry teenagers. Something to think about for later down the line… sun mar makes a great composting toilet for when you want to impress your potential homestead wife. Again, I wouldn’t suggest it if I hadn’t used one myself.

Don’t forget to vent your roof! Drilling holes towards the top side of your squirrel blockers near the underside of the plywood. Cover the holes with screening to keep out bugs and mice. Aluminum screening works best, because mice can bite through the vinyl stuff. Leave about 1-1.5 inches of space between the underside of the roof and your insulation for air movement. Make sure it’s vented at the crown of the roof as well. Otherwise, condensation will happen, dripping water on the inside of the ceiling. It can cause a major moisture problem. I’ve literally heard water dripping inside of unvented roofs.

Love your channel James! and love your passion for reading books. My wife and I are from US. I know you have been thinking about creating an air flow / views through your trees to keep mosquitoes down in the spring. But consider the fact this may cause excessive wind and snow drifts in the winter (last winter was mild in comparison). Also, as you may know tree roots keep the soil from eroding from river banks etc. Some of those trees are very old and you will never be able to replace them in your life time. So be stratigic with which ones you fell. :) May the gods bless you, the old gods and the new! ;)

George Constanza ( a leading expert in shrinkage) said that shrinkage is a serious thing! I live in bear country and have seen bears rip front doors to shreads, tear car doors off and rip roofs of of cars. The meatier the front door the better, good job. If you have to leave the cabin for a long time put a bear board in front of the door on the floor. (piece of plywood with nail's driven through). You might consider drilling some 2 inch holes in the "bird boards" you are putting in and backing with metal screen so the roof can breathe.

Just a heads up if you were not thinking about this tip. When at our place during winter, we cook almost all our meals on the wood stove. We purchased a laser red heat thermometer to aid us in perfect culinary cooking, ha ha. There is always a kettle of water on the stove for hot water when needed, coffee, tea or even dish water. I too am building our place , which we bought raw with noting on it, it is coming along nicely. As a forester I can tel his property was logged recently and knowing where he is, Trees rarely get over 24" diameter there. His sawmill is way oversized for the timber he has available. There's also barely any hardwood for him to even use for firewood. No mature oak or maple. He's up near the Sault.

Hello Good Sir James, Various reasons can cause a generator to make a clicking sound. A defective battery or a battery that is too old and nearing its lifespan (which I doubt is the case here) can cause the generator to make a clicking sound. Insufficient voltage caused by corroded or loose cables can also cause a clicking noise. These are just some of the abnormal noises that you can hear from your generator. If you feel your generator has become noisier than usual, don't ignore the issue and immediately call your technician. Sometimes, the unusual noises could be an indication of a serious complication that can severely damage the generator. Hope You have a Good weekend ! Ooga Booga !

Don’t forget to leave some air for the insulation in your ceiling and you can use the wire did you did under the cabin so you won’t have chipmunks and rodents getting in at the top like birds chipmunks and squirrels and things like that and you won’t get mold in your cabin neither and you also need to put blocker in across the whole top too help We have keeping the rafters straight and with the insulation keeping that up

You really can't beat a wood stove. Especially in a log cabin. I wish I could lend you my tractor/skid steer for a week though! that trail would be a highway!

James my guy, be careful with caulking those frames to the logs because of course that joint will shift as the logs settle. A little bit of sheeps wool stuffed in between the door frame and the logs from the inside for the time being is the best bet.

My friend, do your self a favor and snag a milwaukee cordless leaf blower. You'll be surprised how useful of a tool it is to have around. And there always a bundle deal at home depot in the fall! Blow ur saw dust away, help with keep your fire going, clear away wood chips from ur mill, blow snow off ur vehicles. Saves so much time on sweeping hahaha

Hello Sir James, glad you are enjoying the warm times, hope you spare a few hours of these days to make a raised and covered place to put all the wood that nice stove is going to require, I would be sad if you were to face cold nights due no available wood at hand. Keep those videos coming!

It's funny you brought up oxbow, most people don't know what it is, I grew up in a Hamlet called oxbow in northern New York, Ontario is about an hour away across the bridge. Thousand islands and Alexandria Bay in New York are where I was a chef for awhile.

Nice brook trout, James! You did a great job catching it, but don’t forget-you left the best part behind! The cheeks are a hidden delicacy. They’re tender and packed with flavor. Just peel them off and give it a taste-you won’t regret it! OOGA BOOGA! 😊

I bought the exact stove last year, it worked well they do make a smaller one but you can only put an 11 inch. The burning times exaggerated on the description. We get two to three hours that's it
