Animal populations across the world have dropped by almost 70% since 1970, according to a new report, prompting a desperate plea for global support.
The Living Planet assessed the abundance of almost 32,000 populations of 5,230 worldwide species of animals, birds, amphibians, fish and reptiles.
The World Wildlife Fund for Nature said governments, businesses, and the public must take action to reverse the destruction of biodiversity.

On average, 90% or more who are watching cannot do ANYTHING. Not even if they "stopped using ____" or stopped doing something else. Besides, even if they did, it wouldn't matter. If you steal $10,000,000 and I try to counter it by saving $100 every week... it'll never be resolved, lol! 🤣😂🤣 Kind of like Chump stealing money from dumb Americans (for a "wall" of all things, lol). Or, the war of RUS v UKR. Can't get it back. Nothing can be done. Accept it, and cope, humanity. 🐲✨🐲✨🐲✨

We messed up and toxic the whole World , chemical, plastic and most of all greed , unnecessary luxe , and never look how its made ! From Natural offers. Example; the lungs of the Earth; the Rainforests ! Notting much left ! For idiot soya and oil palms . Ect ect ect ect ect. Many things have to change, its possible, when people realize whats good for Nature. No destroying anymore , but help ! Lifestyle,food , clothes, look what’s behind it .

Shut up what an awful attitude and to try and speak for everyone is arrogant. A lot of people gladly give up comfort to put the important things first and plenty of people also minimize and try to have less and less. So you can give up if you want but that's such a defeated world view based on half of the whole picture

Some people are very greedy and self, but others a lot less so. How much is enough for some? Some want new this, new that, new everything - creating a mountain of waste - and creating the process of extracting more from nature to meet this 'need'. What about taking care of, and fixing what we have?

I use to live in Europe about 20 years ago. went back for a visit a couple years ago. All across Europe, I kept thinking something was missing. Then I realized there were no birds, or at best very few birds. From russia to Paris, Italy to England, there was a shocking lack of birds and bird calls everywhere. I don't know what Europe did, but something big changed.

Regarding the Amazon: No effort will have results if other countries continue to buy Brazilian goods that come from said deforestation (specially Gold and Grains). Also, a local government from a place far away from your nation CAN disrupt your life and, as such, we need to get past this New Colonialism/Cold War politics and start acting together as a human race as a whole.

we should outlaw major population centers so that people have to live sustainably again. living in a city disconnects consumers from their environmental impact and encourages wasteful growth. people order a cheap blender online and don't think about the thousands of miles, hours of production, materials from around the world, and the pollution required to create that cheap blender. if it weren't so easy to have things delivered, they wouldn't even want the blender in the first place because they don't really need it. if people were spread out and required to be more independent, the population issue would solve itself since most people today can hardly take care of themselves.

Two things: 1) Europe and North American are not off the hook in comparison to South America. They have already logged their forests and some humility about that wouldn’t just be good, it would strengthen the argument. 2) European and North American demand for beef and other products is driving demand which is eating into the Amazon. More forceful focus on that would help. This isn’t a foreign issue.

I am an environmental activist living in practice, reduced my annual driving from 2000 miles per year down to under 500 miles per year. 90% of the planet being plowed or paved is quite a stretch. whoever you got this information from you should get a second & 3rd opinion. I would agree that its possible 90% of prime useable/ habitable land & farmland has been paved or plowed or destroyed by deforestation -logging, mining and development which may be 10-15% of the earths surface, which is still huge Some where around. 80% of people on earth do live in paved cities, and 90% of actual farmable land is likely being used & farmed, but a lot of land is untouched except for the ongoing extinction and harvesting of plant and animal populations & natural resources as well as pollution of fresh water sources which could easily be 90% of our fresh water as well as oceans being massively polluted. Just look at the huge uninhabited tracts of land in Russia, Canada, South America and Asia, Antartica and the Arctic. pretty much untouched but also not habitable for the average person who depends on the modern conveniences of having electricity, roads, water eat.

@@theantmattia Agreed. it is possible to have too much of anything, even water, but we are very far below the ideal CO2 concentration still. We are around 400ppm while the ideal levels for growing food (and supporting _all_ life on earth) is around 1200-1500ppm. This natural compound is currently being used as a scapegoat to distract from, and fast-track, the real pollution being done on a mass scale. Once a region has concrete poured over it, or a battery dumped on it, it will take many decades before that area can grow anything other than weeds. Meanwhile CO2 helps these areas grow and heal quicker so which one of those is really the threat to the environment? At some point the fight for the environment was co-opted and we've been bamboozled ever since. Also, don't take this as some defense of oil & energy companies, take it as a reminder that there are other, even larger, markets at play.

I am really in favor of conservation, but where do they get these sorts of stats, how do they verify it, and what sort of samples are they taking? This is simply one study not a consensus, and it is still a speculative estimate based on trends--not hard data. It would be hard to get hard data, and animals are increasingly living badly, but I have a hard time accepting that figure at face value and I think alarmist rhetoric is really pushing people away from conservation. I know that's frustrating, because it shouldn't matter but unfortunately it does.

Population needs to be in balance with jobs, resources, nature and the environment. Having a bigger population in any country than the country can support makes no sense. Access to food, water, shelter, energy and jobs should guide population levels. The worlds population is still expected to add another billion people to feed, clothe and produce pollution. Humans are crowding out all other species of plants and animals. Education and birth control are key to reducing poverty and hunger. Having a child that you can not provide for yourself is cruel and irresponsible. We need solutions not just sympathy. Endless population growth is not sustainable on a finite planet. Every country needs to "TRY" to be more self sufficient. When there are not enough resources to sustain a population something has to give. Countries need to focus on quality of life for their citizens and not just quantity of life for cheap labor. Why import fossil fuels when wind and solar energy can be produced locally and solar energy can power electric vehicles. We need solutions not just sympathy.
@rumfordc
@rumfordc Жыл бұрын
All of the problems you've described are self-solving. If a population can't be supported then it will die off, no extra steps need to be taken. You would only need to take extra steps if you wanted that high population to be supported.

Ive seen more feral cats killing birds and lizards In the desert where I live. Cats have made birds nearly extinct on the island of Kauai in Hawaii as well as in Great Britain, all for the sake of cat lovers feeding strays. Even domesticated fat cats kill birds for the sake of killing them and not eating them, like instinctive sport, Some humans are not much different than the cats they seem to love so much.
