Watch the BBC first on iPlayer 👉 bbc.in/iPlayer-Home With a million species at risk of extinction, Sir David Attenborough explores how this crisis of biodiversity has consequences for us all, threatening food and water security, undermining our ability to control our climate and even putting us at greater risk of pandemic diseases.
Extinction is now happening up to 100 times faster than the natural evolutionary rate, but the issue is about more than the loss of individual species. Everything in the natural world is connected in networks that support the whole of life on earth, including us, and we are losing many of the benefits that nature provides to us. The loss of insects is threatening the pollination of crops, while the loss of biodiversity in the soil also threatens plants growth. Plants underpin many of the things that we need, and yet one in four is now threatened with extinction.
Last year, a UN report identified the key drivers of biodiversity loss, including overfishing, climate change and pollution. But the single biggest driver of biodiversity loss is the destruction of natural habitats. Seventy-five per cent of Earth's land surface (where not covered by ice) has been changed by humans, much of it for agriculture, and as consumers we may unwittingly be contributing towards the loss of species through what we buy in the supermarket.
Our destructive relationship with the natural world isn’t just putting the ecosystems that we rely on at risk. Human activities like the trade in animals and the destruction of habitats drive the emergence of diseases. Disease ecologists believe that if we continue on this pathway, this year’s pandemic will not be a one-off event.

What is frustrating, is that this is not frontline news every single day. The large multi-national corporations, which do not have fundamentally good ethical & ecological practices are not being held accountable. The same messages are being portrayed by Sir David over and over again but nobody seems to be listening.

@Reggie Cyde i saw an old reply and thought you doubled down. Anyways, care for animals that get affected by loss of habitat. Whether it is for their message or not. Just because you disagree on climate that does not mean that the rest of the issues are being placed for the same reason. Wildlife animals do need the space as we do. I can care less for climate change but animals losing their habitat is maddening. No one likes to be thrown off their property.

@Sudden Destruction Do you mean back burning? One of the reasons that the last fire season was so bad in Australia was because not enough of this had been done. The government cut funding for our fire services, and they did not have the man power to do what they needed to do. Back burning has been going on since even the Aboriginals alone roamed this country. Even they understood the importance of it. The oil from eucalypts is a dangerous thing. You burn a little bit of bushland in controlled conditions. It actually comes back really well. Some plants rely on the fire to allow their seeds to awaken. Without controlled back burns, you get a tragedy like the one we have just seen which decimated our country and the abundance of many flora and fauna populations.
@senxiv4232
@senxiv4232 3 жыл бұрын
@Sudden Destruction Remove people living outside of cities? Where did you get that idea? Most Australians live along the coast in cities or townships bordering cities anyway... because that's where the most resources are. Those living more inland would never be made move. Most of those people are farmers, and our economy needs them. If we didn't have those farmers, we wouldn't be able to ship our most popular produce overseas. Nor would we have enough to supply our own people. Everyone would suffer. Why on Earth would you think this is all some propaganda to get them to move?? Livestock and fields require a lot of room. You're certainly not going to find that in the city. Not to mention, without country towns, where would trucks transporting produce have to stop in at? They wouldn't make the trip. The journey from one side of Australia to the other is a long one, with a whole lot of nothing in the middle.

And I understand that many rich people resist to changes to socialism and to lose part of their wealth etc. Socialism models also have plenty of drawbacks ... I do hope there will be some compromise, as we risk sharp turn to the real all-colours rasism in the near future and countless conflicts worldwide. There are too many contradictions in the capitalism today, it's leading us to concentration camps slowly. We need good independent visionaries.

I hope everyone is now listening. At 12 years old in 1999 when I watched David Attenborough on wildlife on one I made the decision to be veggie and now as an adult im vegan. I've chosen not to live in a house (I live on a narrowboat) to reduce my energy usage from the grid and use solar. I have now managed finally to get a job where i can work from home thus lowering my emissions further. I've chosen this life and the best part is people only see my loss but don't see what I gain! I have no bills! I have complete freedom! I have SO much money left over at the end of the month I can go on fantastic holidays and see the world rather than paying for the privilege of a house and I have no children. A choice by me because we don't need more people on this planet, but I love to educate other peoples children. I hope 🙏 that everyone now listens and helps to save their world , because its all we have 🌎 🗺

All of that, your car, diet etc. are a drop in the ocean, when you work for corporations that cause more emissions than you can even imagine, when the money you keep in your bank account or retirement fund is used to finance fossil fuel industries. When you rycle plastic, but it still goes unsorted to China and than dumped into the ocean. You see, the carbon footprint, although true concept, was invented by BP and when applied to indyvidual consumer its a form of greenwashing meant to distract you from what corporations are doing and don't challenge status quo that is capitalism.

it's not going to make headline news every day, so we have to talk, post and create around this subject as much as possible. make it a conversation you have with your family/friends, share this video to your socials & figure out exactly what you can do to help. we all can do more to be more aware/ educated so we can act in a positive way. it's easy to feel hypocritical around these subjects, but the truth is that no-one is perfect. we're all in this together, just make sure you're not one of the selfish ones.

Planting trees is one of the literal least helpful things you could do. Obviously you should do it where possible but it's literally the lowest priority. What needs sorting straight away is to get to net zero carbon usage. We already have the technology of solar, wind hydro and tidal. These are all relatively easy and cheap to make [especially first two]. Most developed country citizens can afford to solar panel their houses and switch heating and cooking to efficient, easily convertible to renewable electric sources like heat pumps and induction. And cut meat down as much as you possibly can as the C02 output for producing meat vs plant based food is insane [although some vitamins are very hard to obtain without it].

This is the most immotionally intelligent comment I have read here (I've read a few). I was wondering why we often consider ourselves separate from nature instead of part of it? The term 'environment' is such an abstract term, don't you think? It contributes to a feeling of seperateness. Tackling the climate and ecological emergency is not an abstract task. I don't think it'll be acheived by setting more goals or targets. It'll require a deep shift in conciousness. In response to your comment, I've enjoyed reading work by the author, Joanna Macy who talks about 'the work that reconnects' which you may like. I think we can move toward a future full of abundance and beauty; and live a life FULL of meaning. If we respect biodiversity and steward the land then we can ALL prosper for generations to come.

The overwhelming situation is that this time it will be global in nature since we're being forced through our own procrastination to confront too many existential problems simultaneously. Problem is simply overpopulation... it's a society as a whole population problem. The only way to "fix" it is to deny people their right to procreate. And for the majority, that simply won't be tolerated. So, that will not happen sadly until it's too late, and the majority of species and resources we depend on, are gone. Forever. In order to have a sustainable societal system, you have to balance. Balance of all things. Fairly and sustainably. Once we hit the point where we realize that we are as a society, as a culture, as whole... are acting like deadly parasites to this beautiful world, and the wide majority are affected by the loss of resources we depend on, and people wake up all of a sudden to this reality that we created ourselves. We will already have used up the resources, the species that are extinct will be gone, and it will be too late. Our only hope to save this planet, is hope that an ET species other than ourselves will intervene, because human culture as we have come to be, is simply toxic. It would take unthinkably massive effort to change our direction to better our situation. Do I think we are capable of doing it ourselves? No. I don't. It will take another massive disaster like the great flood to reset this planet and usher in a new way of thinking towards society. Because our governments, and our culture, simply do not have the will power to do it. If the governments of the world attempted drastic measures, the people would just fight them, for their "human rights" So it's just a total loss at this point. People will drag things on, continue populating, and consume everything we can until we can't anymore, and then, it will be too late. It's so sad.
