I had a very similar experience to yours on a boat in Anglesey… Although we only saw 1 puffin and it wasn’t doing much. You mentioned having to blow up the image. Speaking from experience the A7R4 is much more of a bird sitting still type of camera. When the A7R4 would hit focus with something moving with that 100-400 you would get amazing images but most of the time everything was just off on focus, like the focus tracking was a step behind. Moving to the A1 everything is more like point in the general direction and it is all good.
@jackstutts64392 жыл бұрын
Welcome to my world Gavin. I started out with landscape, following you, Uncle Grumpy, Tom and Nick. Hell, I even bought the f4 road trip. Now I primarily shoot birds (and yes I follow Simon on You Tube). I think there is a way you can blend the two genres. Birds in their environment is very popular these days. Kind of how you included gulls in you wave images back on Vancouver Island and the Oregon coast. (PS. The best part of the f4 videos was the Vegas welcome party with Amanda in her sexy dress.😅)

Must remember to call them 'Sea parrots' .......great name Gavin! If you are ever in the UK during Puffin season I can recommend a trip to Skomer Island off the Pembroke coast. You have to book ahead but you can land on the island and the sea parrots can be literally walking on the path by you. I was shooting most of my time with a 70-200 f/4 and a slower 100-400mm with no problems . Amanda would love it and a bazooka isn't essential!! I highly recommend checking out Mark Smiths channel to optimize the A1 for action shooting, if you think you will become more active shooting wildlife, you could put it in crop mode with the 100-400 and add a 1.4TC, and now your shooting at 840mm. On the A1 the images will hold up even cropping in.. Sony makes a very good zoom thats 200-600 and fairly economical. Always enjoy all the hilarious shenanigan's.
