You both got some beautiful shots guys. Doesn't matter your that lens is smaller than the other guys Gavin, its what you can do with it that makes all the difference. Just on another thought, do you think those puffins with all the colors could be related to the colorful unicorns that once roamed the countryside, Amanda should know because she's the expert. Maybe the next book could be Unicorns and Puffins by Gavin and Amanda. 🤣🤣 😂😂.

I'm nobody, obviously :D Bird photography is wayyy easier than photographing people, period! People suck. People only complain and try to make you idiot, mostly disrespecting you and your work while birds simply fly around and only thinkg you need is to be prepared for the nature + big espensive lenses. Easy-peasy :D

Love the colab with Simon. Seeing you both go on about your specific fields of photography really adds a good dimension to the vids giving eejits like me a good perspective as to the differences and challenges each are faced to get the shot. Brilliant film as always and not sure about you Gavin, but I do not like wobbly boats. I had a very similar experience to yours on a boat in Anglesey… Although we only saw 1 puffin and it wasn’t doing much. You mentioned having to blow up the image. I would thoroughly recommend Topaz Gigapixel to help with that. It’s been a real godsend for me as I can’t hold heavier lenses due to a tendinitis problem, so I’m stuck with 300mm.

Speaking from experience the A7R4 is much more of a bird sitting still type of camera. When the A7R4 would hit focus with something moving with that 100-400 you would get amazing images but most of the time everything was just off on focus, like the focus tracking was a step behind. Moving to the A1 everything is more like point in the general direction and it is all good.

Must remember to call them 'Sea parrots' .......great name Gavin! If you are ever in the UK during Puffin season I can recommend a trip to Skomer Island off the Pembroke coast. You have to book ahead but you can land on the island and the sea parrots can be literally walking on the path by you. I was shooting most of my time with a 70-200 f/4 and a slower 100-400mm with no problems . Amanda would love it and a bazooka isn't essential!! Do I detect an R7 going on your Chrissie Pressie list to be able to borrow that lens?😉 😆

I highly recommend checking out Mark Smiths channel to optimize the A1 for action shooting, if you think you will become more active shooting wildlife, you could put it in crop mode with the 100-400 and add a 1.4TC, and now your shooting at 840mm. On the A1 the images will hold up even cropping in.. Sony makes a very good zoom thats 200-600 and fairly economical. Always enjoy all the hilarious shenanigan's.

Welcome to my world Gavin. I started out with landscape, following you, Uncle Grumpy, Tom and Nick. Hell, I even bought the f4 road trip. Now I primarily shoot birds (and yes I follow Simon on You Tube). I think there is a way you can blend the two genres. Birds in their environment is very popular these days. Kind of how you included gulls in you wave images back on Vancouver Island and the Oregon coast. (PS. The best part of the f4 videos was the Vegas welcome party with Amanda in her sexy dress.😅)

I know the feeling, 100-400mm on full frame doesn't have enough zoom even with extender (and sacrifice of light). My last trip to Iceland got me within 2 meters of the 'clowns' without actually disturbing them. I also have frame filled sharp images of them with lesser gear than you have. Bird in flight is a whole different story though...

I just cant get satisfactory bird images with my 100-400mm, indeed it is the " putee." This is another entertaining 12 min, thanks for posting!

I just hired the sigma sport 150-600mm for four days, pretty nice tbh, you can pick one up used for about £1000, not sure if they do a Sony mount though. Not quite prime quality, but pretty good.

You said something about sedate landscape photography, but I have seen you in some pretty perilous places. I, however, once destroyed my camera in two feet of calm water. What happened was that I knocked my favourite hat off. I went to grab it and proceeded to drop the camera while the hat flowed gently downstream.

Is that lens in your pocket or are just happy to see me...... the sheer cost of those things is eye watering. I bet he never told his wife, that's if he has one after buying that lens 😅

I did, but I’m fortunate that print sales pay for my gear, so I get a “pass”.
