I'm binge watching your videos while I take a break from tending my 250 year old cottage garden. Its good watch somebody else working hard! My garden is small and was full of centuries old rubble when I set to work turning it into something that I hope people find delightful. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Its much appreciated.

Brilliant I'm delighted it's provided some ideas. I must have been feeling relaxed that morning (pyjamas). We since moved house so we are also about to start digging another wildlife pond. Watch this space. Good luck with your dig. Mark

Good luck with it, I've always found that bringing water to a garden helps the whole garden with the variety of wildlife it encourages

Lots to admire. My pond is only a few months old and the plants are yet to take off and give it a fully natural look, but you are right, it is already teeming with small insects, and bees and birds are regular visitors, indeed ever present. I have many of the same features and like you I try to intervene as little as possible, although I manage the space a wee bit more than you. Very. much a delight and a source of daily interest. Thanks for posting and all the best.

Thanks ever so much Norman, it's great to hear about your pond and garden. I've moved home since i made this pond. I'm in the process of digging a much larger wildlife pond. There are a couple of videos on the channel, I'd love to hear your thoughts. Best wishes. Mark

I love how you care about your local wildlife! And your pond seems really well thought out, the little rocky beach for hedgehogs and rabbit, the place for fireflies to lay their eggs... Once you hear about all these things you think "well, it all makes sense", but it's also so complex, so many little things to think about it order for it to fulfil it's potential! I live in the city but I hope one day I will be able to create my own wildlife pond :)

Hi. Thank you for the message. It is great to hear from you. Even in the city you can encourage wildlife maybe even with just a half barrel filled with water and a couple of water plants. Soon birds and insects will visit. 😊

Hi from Montreal, Quebec 🙂 My husband and I are building a small pond in a corner of our backyard. It's for water for our wildlife - especially birds and insects but also some raccoons, skunks, squirrels and rabbits. No plants inside the water because we're letting it freeze over in the winter but it's next to pollinator and bird friendly plantings (inc. lots of wild Canadian roses and Canadian wild violets) and a small stumpery and next summer there will be wild raspberry bushes. Thanks for the inspiring video.

Brilliant. I really enjoyed reading this comment. You have skunks and raccoons!! Wow! Sounds amazing. As does your whole wildlife plot. 😊 Thanks for saying hello. Mark

Great little video. I wonder how many lockdown ponds have been made?! One good thing to come from all the bad I suppose. Our small pond is also now 1 year old. I'm shocked at how quickly it's evolved. We already have palmate newts breeding. Last week we had lots of Large red and Azure damselfly nymphs emerging from the pond too. We've also got some frogs, I did see a few tadpoles but think the newts ate them! I would recommend putting some a small branch (we've used a few twigs) that just hang over the waters edge. Dragon/damselflies love a perch to land on.

This is a wonderful comment thank you Karen. We are slightly jealous of your newts because haven't seen any yet. They are very rare around here. We have our fingers crossed. I'm going to take your advice and hang some branches from the side into the water. It all helps doesn't it? I bet the pond industry has done very well during lockdown yes!! Like you say, at least one positive thing. Thanks again for sharing. Mark

Thank you for sharing, do you add or change water?
@MarksHouseandGardenUK2 жыл бұрын
No, it's just been left to find its own balance. Fortunately, it is in a relatively shaded spot so it doesn't suffer too much evaporation. The rain keeps it topped up and covering the surface with plants prevents it going green. Mark
