Wildly Intrepid Sailing

This is where the sailboat shopping journey all began. In the heart of Newfoundland amidst icebergs and breathtaking landscapes. Thanks to Peter from the Notre-Dame Bay sailing Club in Lewisporte who showed us some sailboats such as a Bayfield 32c, O'Day 36 and a Bruce Roberts 40.

I enjoyed watching this episode, folks! I got a chuckle out of Cory referring to the Bayfield 32 galley as a "kitchen." The scenes around the Newfoundland shoreline with the pack ice during the first half of the video were awesome. I've always loved visiting Newfoundland, however I have not been there since my last trip in 1993. After watching your most recent videos, it's fun to meander through your older ones. 👍

Awesome super happy to hear that you like them. It's been quite the vocabulary learning curve. A totally different language. Thinking of going back to Newfoundland?!😉

@@WildlyIntrepid I hope to return via sailboat after my new sailboat is completed (finally able to resume construction since the warmer weather has returned). I used to do motorcycle camping trips and would take the ferry from Sydney, NS to Port aux Basques, NL. Then we'd ride around the circumference of NL visiting various places of interest along the way until we reached St. John's - then we'd run down to Argentia and take the overnight ferry back to Sydney, NS. Very often, we'd travel up the NL west coast to Saint Barbe and take the ferry over to (I think it was) Blanc-Sablon and travel Rte 510 (Trans Labrador Highway) as far as we could go until we ran out of road - then return back to NL. I think if I sail there with the new sailboat, I'd like to visit Corner Brook as I work my way up the west coast, perhaps to Labrador. I'd also like to visit some of the fishing villages along the south coast too, and I'd love to visit St. Pierre and Miquelon along the way. Unless there is a unique weather window and it's the right time of year, I'd probably avoid putting into Port aux Basques as it's almost always enveloped in "pea-soup" fog, although there is a bakery there that used to always have fresh-baked ham & cheese muffins for breakfast (amazing!) and they were always open very early in the morning. Of course, I could probably spend a lifetime in Nova Scotia, alone. I remember visiting the church in St. Croix Parrish (in Antigonish), located near the Canso Strait. This is where my paternal grandfather was born and I found it emotionally moving to walk around the cemetery and looking at all the tombstones with my surname on 90% of them. These were my ancestors! Of course, it's baby steps first. I'll be doing some short shake-down cruises around my area of Maine (44 degrees, 37' N) first. I think my first venture into Canada will be Grand Manan Island, NB located a short distance from where I live. I'm also planning to cruise nearby Bay of Fundy.

I'm glad the weather is finally cooperating for boat building. It's super hot here in Florida with many thunderstorms. I didn't realize you had explored so much of Newfoundland by bike. It's such an amazing island and we also wish to one day sail around it. The Southern coast of it has so many fjords and pristine areas which are only accessible by boat. The West coast has way less fog than the East coast and Port-aux-Basques area is lovely when not foggy. Labrador changed a lot. They now have a road that does the entire loop from Blanc-Sablon to Happy Goose-Bay-Valley to Labrador City and down back to Baie-Comeau, Quebec. If you ever need tips on areas for Newfoundland let me know I spent many years living in Corner Brook and exploring. Actually, my second hiking guide for Newfoundland just got published. Hopefully the shake-down cruises go well. So many beautiful places to explore and be careful with the tides in the Bay of Fundy, it's impressive to see how big they are. Boats sit on the mud at low tide.

@@WildlyIntrepid Thanks. I've been along the coast of New Brunswick many times, visiting the town of Alma, just outside Fundy National Park. I used to camp out that way as well. I actually designed my new boat with twin keels so it can sit upright on the hard when the tide goes out. That also saves on haul out expenses when you want to give the bottom a quick clean and paint.

@@DowneastThunderCreations That's a very smart design. We had a buddy boat that had the twin keels. The Maritimes are spectacular.

you are obviously right that inside the finished cabin is not a likely place for rust. I just was referring to what we could tell overall. But honestly we were completely new to sailing and boats at this point. Like anyone new we didn't know a thing about what to look for in a good boat. Cheers
