Named "little armored one" by Spanish Conquistadors, the Armadillo's lizard-like skin and bony-plated shell give it a perfect defense against predators. In this episode of Wild America, Marty Stouffer takes us through exactly why this surprisingly agile swimmer and powerful digger is so special.

I loved watching this, I would love to see one. I live in a small coastal town on the eastern side of the .U.K although we have beautiful wildlife, I would like to see other creatures from the four corners etc, but due too severe health problems & lack of cash , I just keep watching wonderful programs like this one.

I ran into one when I was walking my 3 pugs at night a few months back and it seemed to be blinded by my flashlight so it just stood there in front of us!! We had such a bad drought back in the fall that the armadillos were coming out in the day time to look for water which is very unusual!! They're very neat animals but I've often wished that we had wild hedgehogs here like you do in the UK!

One time I was in the forest camping in west texas and I was pretty far from camp. Then I started hearing this insanely loud crashing of leaves and brush. I was so scared it sounded like a huge animal, but I couldnt see anything. After peering through the forest I realised the sound was coming from only 5 feet in front of me! It was just an armadillo routing around absolutly oblivious to me, in fact it almost ran into me! What a funny little guy.

If you have problems with armadillos rooting up your flowerbeds and garden get some Cheyenne pepper powder, crushed red pepper and anything hot. Shake the pepper all over the ground and I guarantee you that they won’t be back. I once used some dried crushed ghost peppers.

I have dispatched 25 of these 9-Banded in the first 11 months of 2023 on my 5.25 acres in central Florida, of which only two were female. Looking at US 2013 9 banded population density maps, it shows I could have anywhere between 13 to 35 on my land at any one time. Luckily they rarely travel more than 1/2 mile from their birthplace. So, it seems I am managing the population and protecting ground laying bird eggs such as Turkeys and Quail. Left unchecked I could have hundreds in just a few years.
