I remember many years ago sleeping in similar conditions--right near freezing is the worst because it is so easy to get cold and wet. The wet is far more dangerous than the cold. Fortunately, I learned that lesson in a tent with a floor, so it was just hard to get out of the sleeping bag in the morning. But wet snow or cold water will suck the life out of you in a hurry, and you were fortunate to be able to get a hot breakfast into you so easily, with no time spent fire building bushcraft style. If it had been a little bit colder, your breath and candles would not have melted so much snow, and there would have been no chance for rain. It would have still been hard to get out of the sleeping bag in the morning in a tent with a floor or in colder weather, but things would have been dry and warm by comparison. You passed the test though--bravo Vanessa!

Hi Vanessa! Got a good laugh from your comment about being a field tester! I actually WAS a field tester for a bunch of prototype gear to be used on Mount Everest expeditions (among other things) and I spent a few cold nights in the snow myself! The most important thing about winter/ snow survival is staying dry which is much easier to say than to do. Also the consequences of making a poor decision while winter trekking are generally much more severe than in warmer weather. When snow trekking be safe and carry those extra few kilos of emergency gear even if you don't intend to use them (tent, extra set of dry clothes, extra food, etc). Your life really could depend on them. Beautiful video as usual! You are quickly becoming my favorite KZbin channel!

23:20 - that's why I loved to camp out in Sweden back in the days. They have something called "Allemansrätten" (The freedom to roam, or "everyman's right", is the general public's right to access certain public or privately owned land, lakes, and rivers for recreation and exercise.") which we don't have here in Denmark, and apparently neither in Germany. And another great video Vanessa - I also hated to camp out in wet/heavy snow, as it's almost impossible to keep things dry, everything gets damp, and you're wet and cold most of the time! 😊

Hey my awesome friend!!! I was worried that you would end up with a miserable night, I was sorry to see that you did, I was really hoping that with all of your gear, you would have had a warm night. You are strong and tough though and you made it through the night, just think, I have done that but it was for a couple of weeks lol and it wasn't fun, cold snow is one thing but cold wet snow and rain, oh my, that is about the hardest conditions one can experience, the ice goes straight to the bones and leaves you in misery with seemingly no escape, and then you had no fire either. Awesome job my friend 😊 I truly think you would love it in America though, yea we have places where you have to ask and stuff but we also have loads of places where you can do whatever you want, whenever you want, which some of those places is where my family and I use to go when I was just a kid. Beautiful landscapes and complete privacy to go out and bush craft all you want with no one to bother you 😊 also I have ask though because you said you thought those tracks were fox? From the size of your hand compared to the size of the tracks, they looked more like coyote? Anyways, awesome video my awesome friend and I am so happy you are ok. God bless 😊

Snow caves are built with a sleeping area higher up on a shelf so that any drips collect lower down , and the coldest air sinks down there too. A Goretex bivi bag is essential to protect your sleeping bag in winter. 😁😁😁😁😁

Well it was another wonderful adventure that you have shared with us. I have to share that today on my 71st birthday, I have enjoyed your snow adventure in the Bavarian forest. You have my respect for having such determination to overcome such difficulties in wet snow. Dry snow such as we normally have here in Alaska is a little bit easier to manage. I would suggest that a couple of pair of wool mittens would have kept your hands warmer. I felt so bad for seeing your red and cold hands. I have experienced such cold hands as my hands are thin and get cold very easily. Such is very difficult. :) Thank you for enduring and sharing such a trip. All the best to you and stay safe. :)

When I am hiking in the woods, or it is raining or snowing, I always tuck my hair (which is a bit longer than yours) into the back of my shirt. This helps prevent it from getting caught on tree branches, and keeps it dry. --- That is a very interesting coal burning hand warmer, I have never seen one like that. When I was young I had one that used cigarette lighter fluid. Now they have USB rechargeable ones that look like a small power bank. I use them to keep my drone and camera batteries warm. But most of them are too hot to be safe with batteries so I shopped around and found one that only gets to 106F (41C). --- I'm surprised you don't use a trekking pole. I have a pair but only use one. They are adjustable length and use one shortened to the length of a walking cane when walking in my yard. Not only because my balance isn't as good as it once was, but also because I have lots of crayfish and rabbit holes here and have nearly broken my ankle stepping into them. A trekking pole is also good for probing snow to see how deep it is, and to use as an adjustable lenth tarp tent pole.

I was shivering along with you. It's a challenge camping in the snow but when it is wet it is so much harder to stay warm. I have seen you grow with your bushcraft so much just within this past year. It is as if you made some kind of commitment to push yourself and challenge yourself like never before. Good job! It shows! When I camp out like that I get a small tin about 6" by 5". I melt wax to almost at the top and add 8 to 10 wicks and let it set. Put the lid on and take it with you. Those 8 wicks when lit puts off a very surprising amount of heat. Enough heat that I can't see my breath anymore. I really appreciate your determination and perseverance. Thank you!

The weather conditions were quite hard on your body, Hon! Where are your gloves?? Why aren't you wearing them? This trip wasn't so favorable, but at least your shelter made for a good windbreak against the elements! That morning spa will look very good to you for sure and you will be able to thaw out the muscles in spite of what you went through. This looks so tough for you?! Very tiring and so hard on your body! I would say this situation is almost survival rather than camping! Extreme camping I guess?! Very admirable! Great video Vanessa! Again respect! :)

I really enjoyed this 2 part episode, because it was interesting to see the challenges being honestly portrayed! It’s a shame about the rules bring not allowed to wild camp. It is the same here in the UK, but without the snow!

I'm sorry you had a bad night. I guess the sands of Aruba didn't work. Carry some extra plastic bags with you and change socks, put on plastic bags and put on boots will keep your feet warm till you get home then you can deal with the moisture. Also a teaspoon of cayanne pepper in your socks around your toes works, just make sure it isn't so strong it blisters your toes. It stimulates the cappilary action in your toes. Glad you survived!!! Hugs

I think that had been necessary to put trees branches under the tarp, to reforce the shelter roof. Thanks for share your real experiences, regards!.

I think if the temperature was colder, you would be dryer & warmer. Would a layer of spruce boughs beneath your bedding helped keep you dryer? The shelter seemed like a great design except you can't control the rain & melting snow. The shovel was great - both to move the snow where you need it & to tightly pack it. Hopefully next time it will be more comfortable. Great video.

Thanks Vanessa,it wasn't the most comfortable night, sorry about that. The rain made it difficult and that's a shame. A little bit more room might have been better,I understand you've got to warm a larger area then, but you might have been able to find a comfortable position to lay. Anyway,it's all experience, and learning tricks to survive, see you next week😊
