It's time to take a pause from the cause to talk about a very special and inspiring limited run of guitars that passed through -- the Gibson Custom Shop 2018 Limited 1959 Les Paul Standard - Brazilian Rosewood. What's so special about this guitar? Read the description below to full details, but the thing that truly makes this guitar special is the iconic association with the guitar's unique wiring configuration -- one who's middle toggle-switch position puts the guitar out of phase. Some argue that this tone is unusable, but Greg would like to respectively disagree. Peter Green / Fleetwood Mac anyone?
Enjoy!
The best word for the bridge pickup is muscular. It does the classic rick Les Paul tone, but it sounds more like a 245-pound linebacker with 4% body fat than a 350-pound offensive tackle. No flub, no ugly muddy frequencies, just pure vintage Gibson tone on steroids. You can also hear that classic vintage-style PAF rasp in the upper-midrange. So, maybe it's more like a 245-pound linebacker that smokes two packs a day charging towards your ear drums to perform a mighty rock and roll tackle!
The neck pickup is deep and clear, with vintage-style bass response to go with broad, woody midrange and clear, transparent trebles. It's the sort of neck position sound that has inspired countless soulful, smooth, solos and thick, juicy rhythm parts on our favorite records. While it is tempting to try and play a bunch of classic rock riffs with it because it matches the sound so exactly, it's much more likely to inspire you to strike out on your own and write a new classic.
The middle position is out-of-phase because of the way the neck pickup is wired, and it sounds like a mad scientist's experiment gone horribly right. Imagine a terrifying Stratocaster/Les Paul hybrid sewn together by a doctor with questionable ethics roaming the countryside terrorizing the town folk and you'll get a rough idea of its awesome power.
This Les Paul is a monster in every sense of the word, and we know that some lucky Gibson aficionado will find its otherworldly tone endlessly inspiring.
