Awesome video, Ryan!!! What you're doing with these DIY hunting videos is mind blowing. Totally on your own without guides or spending thousands of dollars to be flown in and you're still successful. Very few videos like that taking place in Alaska. Congrats on the bull. I know that you weren't hunting a unit that required you to shoot one of a certain size, but how many brow tines did it have and how wide? Sometimes looked like 3 brow tines and sometimes looked like 4. Also, I know VERY little about moose, but he looked to be pretty close to 50 inches to me if not over.
@wildwoodoffgridalaska

Thank you, he had 3 brow tines on each side and was exactly 50”. You judged pretty spot on.

Well he did have $20,000 worth of UTV, trailer, and boat. What's nice is he never had to see another person. I think if it were me, I would have kept that location a secret. Great video and narration. That's a great light weight rifle, I have it in 300 WSM, that might have been a better choice, but if your wife hunts bou it's not a big deal. I'm amazed that old motor is still running. I'd use my pfd to upgrade 😜

@Lyndon Tree this engine ran well for two years, but I run up river just to be safe and know I can always float out. Worse case scenario, I would have hired someone to get the meat and gear out. Not ideal for sure. This winter I will be rebuilding the motor to ensure reliability.

Congratulations! The .270 has done me well through the years. I've hunted mainly CA and WYO but I can say Jack O Conner's round can do pretty much everything except the great bears without issue. I love the .270. 400 shot yards on Antelope...1 shot, 1 harvest. Deer equally the same for me. Of course in Alaska .300 mag would be my choice.

Congratulations! LOVE the unit 20 area. Beautiful terrain, looks like you had nice weather and you definitely got a nice moose. Truly takes stamina and a healthy mind to do that hunt on your own. The solitude is unmatched in the Alaskan wilderness and while it is breathtaking, it can be easy to feel lonely. Hopefully the filming keeps you company 😉, I for one am grateful you captured it. What an adventure! You are very confident and obviously capable of making decisions on the run. Have you worked out what the shooting trip cost you and then the cost of the harvested meat. You cannot count the cost of the fun that you had! Thank goodness for the long daylight hours each day .

@wildwoodoffgridalaska 4 жыл бұрын
I grew up hunting in MT and it was cheaper to hunt then to purchase your meat. Anymore I’ve given up keeping track of costs because hunting has become so expensive it hard to justify that I hunt for food because it is cheaper. It seldom is these days. I hunt because I enjoy the outdoors and because the meat is a clean pure source of food.

Well i don't think i could say much more then what has already been said in the comments below but here is my take on it. Great video really great, showing your perspective of the hunt was like being there with you. So many of them now get a bit boring or repetitive showing the same stuff but i found myself watching every second of yours even replaying parts over. Would have loved to have more footage of you the harvesting the moose but completely understand and i would agree meat in the freezer comes first then the video. If you ever feel like sharing these experience with a lower 48 hunter i would love to tag along. I did like and subscribed and looking forward to more videos, again great video thanks for sharing.

There is an interesting dichotomy between wanting to share what we see and experience with the world while risking the very things that keep it peaceful and valuable to us. I imagine solitude and having this hunting area to yourself is important. Unfortunately I think what you've exposed here is going to sour that for you. I like your spirit. Hope the video doesn't come around to bite you later. Btw there was a nice brownie on your kill a few days after... See you next year.

On an Elk hunt in Colorado in 2003 with a 30/06 shooting Winchester black talon 180 gr I took a 6x7 bull at 225 yds ! Standing at such an angle that l could just miss the left hind quarter by 2” & have the first ribs with about 8” to the left of that , cut off 3 ribs crossed through the lungs , followed the neck up that was curved to the left , on the right hand side , stopping at the base of the head , l saw the crap fly on the impact ! It then turned to walking strait away ! #2 entered right hip, the bullet had already opened to its petals , as it struck the hip bone breaking “1” petal off next striking the 4th rib going sideways , & broke it , bent the bullet 20 ish* , finally stoping at the base of the neck , animal down !! Thank You !!

Ryan, nice job on the bull moose. NOTHING better than organic, free range moose meat. And I'm w/ you: the 300 Win Mag is the way to go! I had one until I gave up moose and deer hunting around Juneau. Only a couple of places to go for moose here and those spots can be crowded and hard to reach. I see that you use a Garmin InReach. That's a great tool to have in remote places like Alaska affords for us. I've had one since before Garmin bought out DeLorme and have used it for thousands of miles sailing in SE AK, down the Inside Passage, down the entire US west coast, and all the way to Cabo san Lucas Mexico on sailboats. I even used it two years ago delivering a 46' powerboat from Juneau to Valdez for a friend. Am curious what other gear you carry w/ you when you leave camp and go up/down river, in case your dinghy springs a leak or you get hurt, or have a bear encounter? If you haven't already, it would be good to do a video that showcases those items, to give other hunters and outdoors people an idea of what's needed in real remote areas like Alaska in case of an emergency. On my boat, I have a 'ditch bag' that goes w/ me if the boat goes down or catches fire. It's a mil-spec drybag duffle and in it I carry a VHF radio, small binoculars, flares, two limb saws, a small first aid kit, bear spray, a large 16x16 tarp, high end space blanket bags for 3 people, 3 water filtration water bottles, and some high calorie vacuum packed bars with enough calories for 3 people for a week. I also have my InReach in the cockpit at all times underway, and my VHF base station onboard has a 'DSC' emergency button that automatically tunes any other VHF w/in reach to a certain channel and gives them the name and description of my boat, my latitude/longitude, my name, and the time of the distress. That combined w/ my InReach are two great tools for any mayday situation. When I go ashore in my dinghy in a non-emergency, I carry the InReach, some bear spray, a handheld VHF, some food/water in a day pack, wipes (bears do poop in the woods), and some camera gear. I should also carry a space blanket and water filtration water bottle in the small dry bag on the dinghy but haven't purchased those yet. Congrats on the moose. I tell people who've never seen or harvested one to imagine being in a very, very remote location, shooting a horse and then having to butcher it in the field, pack it in a small boat, and get it home. That gives them an idea of what's really involved!

This was a great video. You earned my subscription. A lot of people use deer rounds for moose but they really shouldn’t. 243 and 270 aren’t ethical. Get a medium bore. 35 whelen, 358 Norma, 338 win mag. One and done. The animals will always die quickly. It was good to see someone agree that five rounds to the boiler room should be needed if you’re using the right cartridge.

Wildwood Off Grid Alaska you’re welcome. Thanks for making such great videos. If you haven’t already, take a look at the 35 whelen and 358 Norma. Both are excellent large game rounds and it’s always fun buying new guns lol I’m having a Weatherby Vanguard rebarreled to 358 Norma by McGowen. There aren’t many factory options for that cartridge.

The rivers you guys have up there are incredible. And breaking down a moose solo has to be a serious challenge. Great hunting experience. Those rodents will do a number on a tent for sure, had a mouse scratch a hole through my Hilleberg last year.
