Many saddened, thoughtful faces wondering what the future would bring while listening to some of the greatest music on earth.

I thought this performance was similar to Toscanini's. Of course, there are fluctuations in tempo, but that's what makes it attractive. I like it because it doesn't have the heaviness of slower tempos like Karajan's. The final timpani beats end in the same place as Toscanini's. Recent versions have longer beats.

An dieser Aufnahme zeigt sich, welche exakten Tempovorstellungen Furtwängler hatte. GERADE bei Wagner orientiert er sich ganz an den Tempovorstellungen des Komponisten. Bravo Bravissimo.❤

The close-ups of the audience members were filmed prior to the concert. No fidgeting, talking or coughing was allowed. This performance took place in a factory, and the workers were told to behave like statues totally engrossed in the music. I must admit the workers did a decent job of feigning total absorption in Wagner's music, including that very pretty fraulein at 6:50.

@@thebigstink7472 The film! Do you actually imagine that the close-ups of the workers and injured soldiers staring impassively at the orchestra were filmed during the concert? The workers and soldiers were told not to move or look into the cameras that were right in front or next to them, like the guy with a Hitler moustache.

The eyes of audiences were very impressive. Some of them might think this concert is the last experienc of their life.

La calidad del sonido no es muy buena, parece constreñido, por eso no se aprecia la grandeza de esta obra y no creo que sea por culpa de Furtwängler...que opinan Vds...? Saludos desde España...

Though I know this wasn't the intended effect of Goebbels' propaganda ministry, the somber faces of the workers convey an eerie sense of foreboding brilliantly appropriate to the time and place this film was made. 1942 was the turning point of the war for Nazi Germany after several years of incredible military victories. A few months after this propaganda movie was released, the Battle of Stalingrad would commence, marking the beginning of a series of devastating German strategic setbacks and military defeats on the Eastern Front that would consign Hitler and his monstrous Third Reich to the dustbin of history, but not without taking millions of German soldiers and civilians with him. In my mind, the film eerily and unintentionally portends the coming disaster soon to befall the Reich!

The fact that this concert was recorded in 1942 in Nazi Germany with war and genocide raging throughout Europe makes it creepy as hell.

The decor, too, is "once in a lifetime". As for the performance, Toscanini's observant, exciting performance at pretty much ONE tempo strikes me as more consistent with the work's overall character than the various little hysterias presented here. WF's performances AFTER the war were much better than those he gave during the war.

I think it might make sense to say that Wagner's works are so enduring precisely because you can have such diverse interpretations by truly great conductors. That being said, I agree that this performance is a bit frantic.

Гениальнейший дирижëр и гнуснейшее нацистское окружение, как такое может сочетаться... Культурные, видно нравится музыка великих композиторов фашистам и тяжелейшие военные преступления фашистов на территории СССР, это непостижимо.

Vintage recording sounds funny, poor things. But still, Wagner would have wept if he was still alive at the time to listen to this recording by Telefunken lol.
