Will a 6l80E fit in a 2nd Gen Camaro?

This time around, we put a 6l80e automatic transmission into the 1970 Camaro. This required cutting the transmission tunnel to make it fit! While we were in there we ran across the dreaded RUST you tend to find in 50 year old cars. We cut and reweld new floor pans into the car as well while we are in there all in the name of getting the car ready to finish up the swap.

if you planning on keeping the car. you should spray epoxy primer on the welds and bare metal before seam sealing and undercoating. the rubberized undercoating will eventually dry and crack

I just put a 6.2 with a 10 speed transmission in my 71 Camaro

@@CarGuyFridays it is a bit bigger than the 6 speed and 8 speed. I had to cut the transmission tunnel out and install a prefabricated 2 inch raised transmission tunnel but now it fits in there nicely

I have a 73 Camaro LT with a column shifter destined for a restomod. I am curious how I'd deal with the indicators in the dash.

I did a gauge cluster from Dakota digital which interfaces with the obd2 info yo show on the dash. There is also a few companies that offer aftermarket body control modules that give you a ground or 12v for things like reverse lights, gear readout, etc. Since I needed all the gauges to work I just went with the Dakota digital unit. Not cheap. But very nice and just works

which driveshaft did you use? I have a 76 with the same engine and transmission

Did you have any trouble putting your center console back in? Or did it look right when you did? I’m going to be putting an ls3 and 6l80e in a 1971 Camaro

I got it on there and it looks good to me! I did end up welding custom brackets to bolt it to though. Still, you can't tell it's in a different spot

How much ground clearance did you end up with for the transmission?

It was super low. I ended up swapping another trans pan on from, I believe it was a g8, and now it's nearly even with the oil pan. I don't remember the exact height, although realistically that'll be relative to ride height too. I figured same height as oil pan was about the best I could ask for

Can you still use the horse shoe shifter?

You could yes. The oem horse shoe shifter wouldn't let you take the trans into manual mode though since it lacks enough slots.

Do you think the transmission tunnel is similar to a 1977 camaro? I have an LS3/4l60 transmission I'm going to put in my 77 Camaro, but my LS swap guy is recommending a 6l80 transmission instead. Also, does your stock center console still fit with the tunnel modification?

I don't know on the 77, but nothing I've read suggests it should be different. My center console does fit yes. I've no idea if the original mounts would have worked or not as I welded new tabs to screw the center console into. You'd never know! You'll have to build a 4l60 to handle stock ls3 power. Even then a 4l60 will need an extreme build to hold mildly modified ls3 power. At a minimum you'd want the 4l80. I'm guessing it would fit given it's still only 4 speed long. Not sure how you'd control it though since the ls3 computer is designed for the 6l80
