Battery-powered push mowers are taking over but the question is will these actually provide a better option than the vanishing gas-powered push mowers we have used for decades? I will put 2 of the latest options to the test where I will show the actual run time across 2 different lengths of grass, the actual charge time for batteries, and some pros and cons of each model.

Been using 12 amp electric corded mower with 100 foot 12 gauge cord for over 20+ years. Our lawn is 5000 square feet. Benefit of corded electric mower is unlimited run time and also plenty of torque

I have an LM2150 Ego mower bought in May of 2021. with the 10AH battery. It will cut my .13 acres of lawn on one charge, I have no issues with the self propel, it's nice that they use a separate motor to run the wheels. I've been very happy with mine including the Ego edger, string trimmer and blower. Top quality build on all, I would never go back to gas.

I bought a Toro 60 V Force Flex mower a couple of years ago . It came with a 6 AH battery . I believe it was about 350.00 in 2021. I bought an additional battery ,7.5 AH with was almost as much as the mower with the 6AH battery. I also have the string trimmer , blower and hedge trimmer that uses the 2 AH battery . My yard is about a 1/4 acre and it takes both batteries to mow my yard. It mows very well and it steel deck machine just like the gas powered machines. I believe it is a cut above the other battery powered mowers.

I've had a 56V Ego 21" mower for about 6 years now. Originally I kept my gas mower as a backup because I was worried about the torque if my yard was ever a bit out of control like you are showing, however I quickly learned that the Ego has plenty of power for even the thickest lawn. Mulching is quiet hard on the battery, especially if the lawn is long. I generally bag my clippings and the run time is significantly longer if I do. If my lawn was as long as yours was, I would probably use the side discharge chute. I think you would get much longer runtime even though you don't get the benefit of mulching. You didn't really cover this but the battery charger for the Ego is fantastic. It charges really fast, and clearly shows you the state of charge while it is doing its work. I don't have the Speed IQ on my mower, since that just came out this year. I thought it looked like a gimmick and you seem to have proven that correct. Ego does sell mowers without it, so I would buy one of those if I needed to replace this one, but again, after 6 years it is absolutely flawless. Still has plenty of run time. The battery has held up extremely well. I have the 10 Ah battery.

I switched to Ryobi string trimmer & leaf blower recently, but I'll hang onto my Honda gas-powered mower. Batteries are just too expensive and don't last long enough. Maybe in a few years when Lithium-ion batteries are replaced by solid-state batteries that have greater power and a longer life (and are much smaller). They're in the works.

I purchased the ego select cut Xp last summer. My lot is roughly 1/3 of an acre and overall it does handle the task well. My biggest issue is just the fact it takes about an hour to just mow the full property which is more an issue of the size of the deck. I run the high lift blade regularly as I feel the other two blade options just don’t generate quite enough lift. The 10ah battery lasts just long enough to cut the whole yard, and on occasion requires two batteries when the time between cuts is extended. Having multiple tools and batteries makes taking care of yard word a breeze so for anyone on the fence have no fear.

I have the EGO 2101 with 5Ah battery and 0.1 Acre of grass. I cut at level 2 once a week normally, grass will be about 4 inches before cut and about 2 or 2 1/4 inches cut height. Battery last entire time with about 1/3 power left. charge only takes about 40 to 50 minutes. I also love how easy it is to fold the handle for storage and the height adjustment is the best of any mower on the market.

One thing that people will need to be aware of is that range drops as the mowing blade gets dull. I used to mow a .35 acre lawn with a 21” ego and it took 70% more power to mow my lawn at the start of the next year, before I sharpened the blades. Mulching is considerably harder on the mower because the mower can’t clear the cutting chamber as fast as it can when bagging or using the side discharge. I just got a 42” Ego riding mower and use the side discharge if the grass is very tall or damp.

Also from Home Depot, 2 seasons ago I purchased the Toro 60V Max Recycler battery powered mover. It has rear self powered drive so no need to "push" Also came with a bagger and a side discharge chute, battery and charger with 2 year mower and 3 year battery warranty. This has been the best mower I have used.. My lot is 1/3 acre of course minus the house and garage foot print, with a small front yard and almost double the size back yard. I can get 2 mows with a single charge. Never quit on me yet, and I always monitor the battery strength with the visible battery gauge before each use. Surprised you didn't review the Toro 60V mower, its bigger battery capacity than the 56v in your video. So pleased with this Toro that I also purchased the battery powered string trimmer and blower. Haven't been dealing with gas and 2 stroke oil going on 3 years now !

One factor that can all but eliminate the runtime/acreage issue is getting several yard tools in the same battery ecosystem. My lawnmower, snowblower, chainsaw, weed whacker, and leaf blower are all Ryobi 40v. Many of these came with batteries, and they work with all of the tools, but I will almost never use all of the tools in a row. For instance, I will never use the lawnmower and snowblower on the same day. At this point I have more battery energy than physical energy, I am almost always done for the day before I run out of battery power. I would imagine that if I put the first batteries I used right on the charger, they would be about full by the time I used up the last one anyway. I know getting a lot of expensive electric tools and batteries is not an easy or perfect solution, but slow future expansion/upgrades is something to keep in mind when jumping into a battery ecosystem, not just the specs of the tool you want right now.

Happy with my EGO. Yes, you can run down the battery in minutes if you skip a week and try to mow super tall grass. My gas mowers couldn't handle it either. In my first year in this house I bought a Ryobi mower and weed whipper package with a charger and one 40 volt 4-amp-hour battery. The mower is 16 inches wide, so a bit small, but the price was really good. I bought a second 4-amp-hour battery about two months later for half the price of the entire package. Batteries on their own are really expensive but the packages are a good buy, and I've noticed this across all brands for years. My yard is roughly 200 square metres, and if my lawn is like your first test it takes me about 35 minutes to mow and weed whip. The mower never stalls and I always use the mulching plug. I never cut wet grass because it doesn't mulch properly, making a mess, and I don't like the strained sound the motor makes. I will change the battery out when I'm about 3/4 finished, not because it's dead but because the mower starts to run more slowly as the battery runs down. The first battery has about one bar of four left when I swap them, and I use the second battery in the weed whipper once I'm finished mowing. At the end, the second battery has three bars of four. I'm quite happy with this; I do not find it inconvenient at all. One thing I have noticed is that a battery won't last as long on hot days, and once it quit completely. I thought it was dead but it wouldn't charge and the tester didn't work. When I realised what was going on I popped it into the fridge for about 15 minutes and it was good to go again. So, I try to mow late in the afternoon or early evening - out of the full sun.

I think the key thing for cordless tools is that they get the recharge time to be less than the run time. That way you just need two batteries (or sets of batteries) and you can just keep swapping and charging. I’m able to do this with the Ego string trimmer and rapid charger but I get the feeling the mower will not last as long so I haven’t replaced my gas mower yet.

@@bernlitzner2739 Yes I have a 2 and a 2.5. That backs up my point that it’s going to take too long to charge the batter compared to the runtime of the mower. The charging times need to improve a lot more to really compete with gas in my opinion.

My 1/4 acre is the flattest piece of Iowa you will find. This spring I purchased a Makita LXT which is not self propelled but also uses uses the 2 18v batteries. I like the e unit as a mulched, but it’s a loser bagger. Solid, well built machine with nothing to maintain except the blade. Are the batteries massive, no, but this meets my needs.

My dad was an early adopter with an electric mower. Too early. This must have been around 2008. The brand escapes me, but it had a 15 inch cutting deck and a lead acid (not Li-Ion) battery. It couldn't even cut a 3 or 4 sq.ft, the motor would immediately bog down and trigger the circuit breaker or motor protection circuit. We returned it within the week. I'll eventually switch to electric once my gas Toro dies. That might not be for another decade.

My electric on one battery can mow my front or back. I don't know if it can of both, because I alternate every week. Of course I only need to mow my lawn 4-6 times a year. Your climate may be different! For me though I have no desire to mow for more than an hour. That said switching a battery is just as fast as putting gas in, and faster than an oil change. But for me it's the lack of noise. So nice. Can listen to music without going deaf and still hear around me. Also nice when I want to mow at like 7 p.m. after work. I do use a push, not self propelled. It's light enough it doesn't matter. My snow blower is gas, self propelled, would never get an electric. We got several 14" snowfalls last winter. Dislike the noise, but necessary.

I mean right from the start before I even start the video really. ill try to remember to update once finished, but battery mowers are suuuuper nice. Most of my lawn if not like most lawns you can only get about 90-95% of it with a ride mower. The last bits of to hard to turn in, not enough room, tight squeeze, etc.... can be easily done with a mower. Now a quick electric mower is going to be fair easier to work with and maintain compared to a gas engine mower. Plus mine was only like $100, I have a half decent sized lawn and itll still get about half of it done before dying if I need it to like of my ride mower dies.

That is supposedly an option, but it's always out of stock. Be aware that Amazon doesn't always stock EGO, as they sell through Lowes primarily. The frustrating thing about the batteries is that they should be vastly less expensive. Generally it's cheaper to buy a new tool that includes a battery than to buy the same battery separately, or at least close. There are off-brand compatible batteries, but there are lots of reports that they don't provide the Ah that they're rated at, so you're likely to end up with junk going off-brand. The cost of lithium ion batteries has dropped dramatically, but you wouldn't know it from these tools. (And not to knock EGO in particular; all the brands do it.)

Our yard is about 1/4th acre, with the back yard having a hill rising to the back fence. Typically takes about 40-45 minutes to cut. I'm a one and done (cut non-stop, no breaks) kind of guy. Our gas self-propelled push mower, about 6 years old, still does a great job. The rear wheel drive is great on the hill. A front drive self propelled mower would be useless except on nearly flat surfaces. Our next door neighbors have a yard nearly identical in size and with the hill, also. They have an electric mower, about 2 years old. I'm not sure what brand it is, but it seems to only do about 3/4ths of the yard and then quits. They either finish it a few hours later or the next day, which tells me they have just one battery.

No corded lawnmower because my HOA takes care of my lawn. I saw the price of batteries prices and it concerned me a lot. I haven’t had any of the corded tools break in years and years. I have corded drills, scroll saws, circular saws, etc. from back in the day and they all still work. I do have battery; impact driver, drill gun, and flashlights that use the same batteries, which are 18 and 20 volt batteries. I have one 40 volt tool, Dewalt MultiTool but that’s it for 40 volt tools. I have had to replace some of the 18 volt batteries but none of the 20 or 40 volt batteries. I have a dual fuel generator, if I lose power to the house so I can still keep working. The 40 VOLT BATTERIES ARE TOO EXPENSIVE TO replace for those EXPENSIVE BATTERY POWERED tools and yard equipment. Well, we’ll see how the Dewalt 40 volt batteries hold up on that one tool. If they don’t, I will replace it with a corded tool.

Interestingly enough, I just bought an Ego (with the 10Ah battery - model LM2156SP) last month. My previous (gas) mower would take a little over an hour to mow my whole ~12000 sq. ft. yard (just a little over 1/4 acre). Here are my observations... 1) I typically break up the yard into "back yard (~7000 sq ft)" and "front yard (~5000 sq ft)" before this, because I would run out of gas. Since I've been doing this, I haven't ever run the electric mower completely down. I don't think it would make it anyway, based on the indicator lights. 2) Charging the battery to full takes about an hour, so if I did need to do both front and back, I'd probably take a 1/2 hour break and charge the battery up "enough". 3) Mine didn't have the self-propelled feature you mention anyway, it does have a speed control in the center so you can adjust the speed yourself. 4) I find that the mower is light enough, I don't even use the self-propelled feature except when going uphill anyway. That's a nice change from the gas mower. 5) I really like that "mowing" and "self-propelled" are independent. For example, if I'm done mowing and am at the back corner of the lot, I can turn off the blades, turn up the speed, and "self-propel" back to the garage. 6) Google Maps *will* show area. Right-click on a corner and "measure distance", then outline and close your loop and a box will pop up with the area.

I've had a kobalt self propelled push mower and I'm fairly happy with it.Buying a backup 2 extra batteries is a must though.I mow just over a half acre and the extra 2 batteries are much needed.Ide say the 1st two batteries last 35 minutes that's enough too do my front yard. Then my backyard the extra 2 batteries will finish the back yard.I live in arkansas so my test have been done this summer in 95 too 102 degree heat one week it was in the mid 80s and I did tend too get about 8 to 10 extra minutes in the slightly lower temperatures.Ive had my kobalt self propelled since June 1st 2023 so we will see if these numbers continue.

I have a Toro cordless 60v self propelled mower all in all I'm happy with it, but a few things that are annoying is the battery takes about 4 hours or more to charge. This year we had a lot of thick crabgrass and the mower can bog down even if the grass is dry, the batteries tend to overheat when the power is elevated most of the time. So when the batteries die, the charger will not work till the battery cools down (shows a solid red light) I end up putting the battery in the refrigerator for about 20 minutes then it will start charging again. When the crabgrass is thicker I use the side discharge but it still struggles a bit. (blade is new and sharp) Obviously it helps to raise the height of the mower, but even then it has the same problem.

Bought a Kobalt (Lowe's) electric mower for around $350 3 years ago. It came with a single 40V, 172Wh Li-Ion battery and, more importantly, a 3-year battery warranty. The literature said it would mow for 30 minutes. I have a 3K sq ft lawn that normally takes me only 12-15 minutes to mow. The first time my grass was a little long, maybe 5", mowing down to 3" and I didn't finish before the brand new battery ran out. I learned I have to mow more often - no more than 1" at a time, and to only use the self-propel feature when I really have to. High summer heat also eats into battery life. I struggled along with it for 2 years and, sure enough, on this the 3rd year the battery wouldn't give me 10 minutes. Worse, when Li-Ion batteries drain, they heat up a little, so when I put it in the charger it won't charge until it cools down. Add that time to the 3-5 hours it takes to charge and I was usually done until the next day. I put a warranty claim in and Kobalt honored it and sent me a new one. Still, on really hot days, it can't make it 15 minutes and I supplement it with the older batter for the extra 5 minutes it takes to finish. It's a real PIA, and I doubt I'll ever do electric again. Also, keep the blades SHARP - it makes a huge difference in battery life. So, if you do it, try to get multiple batteries, keep a close eye on the warranty and USE it (you're going to need it), and only count on about 30% of the advertised battery life.

I use a Ryobi electric and am very happy with it. You have to take on a smaller swath though, like only 20% of the width of the cutting area, and walk slowly, being careful not to let your motor slow down too much. The motor is a lot quieter and trouble free than gasoline. You just have to operate it more slowly and take more passes by narrowing your cutting swath depending on the thickness of your yard. If you like to grind through a yard very quickly, overcoming all obstacles with ease, get a gasoline mower. One battery should last about an hour and cut a small yard. I used to have a large yard and would cut a portion every day, then recharge the battery for the next day. It was fine because who wants to mow more than that in one day anyway? Another option for a larger yard is to get a second battery. Operate it within its horsepower limitations and it will cut just about any yard. ..

I was impressed with the EGO as it plowed through the taller grass. I thought for sure I would have to take 1/2 or less of a swath. Looks like Ryobi has a TON of options on the battery platform which makes it pretty compelling.

I purchased the 10MAH 56V EGO 1 year ago. Initial use I could mow my entire 1/4 acre lawn on 1 charge. During windy days it would not cut my lawn compared to my Toro that is 20 years old. The EGO also suffers from Inconsistent grass cutting with a freshly sharpened blade and as stated the self propelled drive would lock up intermittently or be completely worthless. After 1 year of owning the EGO I suffered 50% battery loss and EGO wants $400 bucks for a new battery. Forget electric mowers.

I switched from an electric (corded) lawn mower to a battery powered lawn mower (a Worx 20" push mower, not self-propelled). [Note: the actual cutting swath of this mower is about 19"] Also got the Worx battery powered weedwhacker and blower. I like the lawn mower, and the lightweight weedwhacker cuts surprisingly well. The Worx lawn mower takes 2x 20v/4ah batteries [these batteries fit in other Worx lawn tools--like the weedwhacker and blower--and also fit in some Worx hand tools]. A set of 2 Worx 20v/4ah batteries will handle either our back yard or the front yard (but not both, together). These batteries recharge quite slowly (several hours), so we have 5 of these larger 4ah batteries, and several of Worx's smaller capacity 2ah batteries.

Honnestly I think the best advice I could give (mastercraft 40V 2x5Ah) is to look past your mower. If you can get for example mower + snowblower of the same brand with compatible batteries you could double the autonomy you have on both tools, just by swapping the batteries. That's what I'm planning to do. It could even work with hand tools if you get cordless drills and impact drills, but the capacity of the batteries is quite lower so you'd have to know that you just need "a bit" to end your mowing. I really think that if properly done, a combo lawn mower + snow blower is the best. You would even have two chargers to charge faster (if double batteries like me). One thing to note : I started to sharpen the mower blade this year, and it can REALLY makes a difference in capacity. Before doing that I almost had to mow my lawn in 3 parts whereas sharpening put me in the 1.5 charge range. And if I were to mow my lawn more often (like once a week instead of once each time I get the time and energy to do so) I could even get to 1 charge for the whole lawn. I'm gonna buy a snowblower this year from the same brand in order to double my capacity. I'll wait for discount. You could even do that with the lawn mover, waiting for them do destock in order to get discounts. It's "cheaper" to buy another tool with the batteries than to buy additionnal batteries.

Thanks, it's interesting content as I'm sure my next replacement mower (replacing a wired electric Bosch) will be battery. That's true, but if your lawn takes 1 hour to cut with a gas mower, you need to understand the cost of the longer running battery-operated mowers that you would need to step up to. The lower battery capacity B-O mowers will disappoint if you try to cheap out with them. The best part of the comparison was that two almost equal costing mowers, with one only doing half the time as the other.

I have been using a battery powered mower for about seven years on my 1/10 acre lot. Battery mowers have both pros and cons. PROS: Don't have to store gasoline in the garage and no oil changes. Battery mowers are much quieter so I can mow earlier in the day without annoying the neighbors as much. Instant start so I'm never tempted to leave the mower running while I empty the grass collection. Battery mowers are much lighter so they are easier to push even without self propulsion. Much less pollution. Many states and cities are restricting small gas-engine yard tools so a battery-powered tool might be the only option soon. CONS: Battery prices, however, I use the same batteries in my mower, leaf blower, and string trimmer, so in total I already have four batteries for the group. I can recharge the first set before I empty the last set so I have unending battery availability. Buying spare batteries is expensive but the same battery is almost free when combined with a leaf blower/string trimmer. They aren't as powerful as gas mowers but this hasn't been a huge issue for my yard. YMMV. If my mower died tomorrow I would 100% purchase a replacement battery mower. The pros hugely outweigh the cons and I already have the batteries so I could purchase a mower from the same family *without* batteries and reduce the cost.

At my old house (tiny lawn) I had a Toro with the automatic speed control. That part worked perfectly, the mower was another story. Constantly bogged down and stalled with taller grass. Bought an Ego with dual 5Ah batteries in 2020; ate through 10”+ grass like a hot knife through soft butter, and i could usually mow 2-3 times on a charge. The toro went to the side of the road and I still have that Ego for small areas at the new house. For the main lawn here (closer to an acre) I picked up a Z6 52” with 6x12Ah batteries. The yard is all hill with plenty of obstacles and I’m no lightweight, but I’ve yet to run it down even with grass in that 8-10” range, with plenty left to haul the trailer around and clean up debris.

It typically took me an hour to do the yard so, when our gas mower died, I purchased a Ryobi with 2 40V 6Ah batteries that said would last 80 minutes. With a typical weeks cut (we have had a lot of rain in the NE this summer) I can get the whole yard done on the two batteries. Sometimes I have a little left at the end but when one battery stops i put it in the quick charger while I use the other one and it has about half a charge if I need it.

Worx Nitro: 20V 5Ah (4) for a total of 400 Wh I only use this on the sod around the house because my wife thought that the riding mower would be too heavy. I cannot mow all of the sod on a single charge so I bought 4 more identical batteries that I swap out. That cost an additional $500. I don't have the square footage of the sod and Google Earth is at least four years or so old and our landscaping improvements are not shown. The Worx Nitro mows okay. I'd say that my old Toro did a better job and didn't have near as much plastic on it. The height adjustment is with a single lever, which is nice. I do not have to wear hearing protection when using this mower and of course, no oil or gas to fiddle with. The transmission is adjustable and works well. Overall, it's okay. If I still had my old Toro, I'd prefer that. But I sold that before we decided to have sod put down. Sorta like that old vehicle you had sitting in the garage for years and finally sold off and then a few years later you wish you hadn't. Battery powered mowers need to be able to cut as well and run as long as a gas powered. If it takes 3 hours to mow, buying extra batteries is your only option. Is buying extra batteries cheaper than the gas, oil, spark plug and air filter required for my old Toro? (Carb cleaner, carb rebuild kit...) I'm paying over $4 a gallon for ethanol-free gas here in Wyoming. Twenty bucks for 5 gallons, which would last me almost the entire mowing season. Five hundred bucks for extra batteries so I can get the mowing done in one day...

For the first time ever, I have been unable to find someone to give me a lawn job. I did happen to buy my own lawnmower and after research, I ended up with the Ego. Mine takes 2 batteries at one time though, instead of just one. For the $700.00 price tag. My nephew comes over to give me a lawn job, since I cannot physically tolerate it anymore and he really likes it. Only used it TWICE before I had to have it serviced because of a bad "Computer board" Don't mind electric, but NO NEED for a computer board. Anything to jack up the cost for the people with no money, and city ordinances to FORCE people to buy this equipment, or face going to court and having a lien put on their house. Oy GEVALT ! My lawn, can take me two weeks to cut. My Nephew can do it in about 45 minutes and he seems to be getting faster. The battery last a long time, but remember, I have 2 so that lengthens the run time. I've heard horror stories about the price of those batteries too, so I hope I die before they need to be replaced. They do have a charger but only one, and only one battery can be charged at a time. My Ego has separate controls for run and go, and also has a throttle to control the speed. This is the model I have and even though I don't personally use it, I love it, and my Nephew says he loves it too and it's so much better than the lawnmower his family has, which is an old gas powered. EGO Power+ LM2142SP 21-Inch 56-Volt Lithium-Ion Cordless Electric Dual-Port Walk Behind Self Propelled Lawn Mower with Two 5.0 Ah Batteries & Charger Included. Ordered it from The Amazon, so they send it to me, and there was almost no assembly except for the bag, which I do not use. My ego has more of what your Makita and Ego also lasts a long time. Even on the first cut, (After getting threats tapped to my front door from the City of Florissant) it lasted the whole time. No recharge needed. We get cited if the grass is over 8 inches and it certainly was. I don't know the size of my lawn but people I had out here estimated me at $50.00 which I certainly was NOT going to pay when I only paid between $30.00 and $35.00 for the previous year, and only $35.00 at my old house, which was a MUCH bigger yard. So my Nephew gets the $30.00 every two or three weeks. However long I think I can get away with not being harassed by the city... They don't keep our streets up, but GOD FORBID MY HOUSE isn't up to THEIR STANDARDS. And they don't pay any bills around here. Oy vey !

I've been using an EGO for a few years now. Another benefit (beyond not needing to purchase gas) is the lower sound burden on your ears. I can hear cars going down the street and even people.

That's the thing... They're swappable ... You can buy more than one battery and get the whole yard...

yes, and no slave labor to produce your batteries with a gas mower.

For technology that is changing faster than I can say battery these mowers simply aren’t efficient. But, I’m a diy maintenance on stuff I have so changing/ cleaning parts on a simple gas powered mower doesn’t bother me a bit. If any of you fine folks want to get rid of those loud obnoxious smelly gas push mowers and are in north Georgia I’m buying this weekend!!
