My buddy and I tore a rebuilt "350" out of an 86 Pontiac to put in his 65 Stude. Turned out it was an 86 305, we noticed this while it was half out if the Pontiac, took the heads off and it really was a fresh .040 rebuild with 0 miles on it. The car was rotten. We put a used .454/.454 crane cam in it, a vintage holley dual plane, and it's a fun street motor that puts a smile on anyone's face!

I had a 74 El Camino, they are actually quite decent for hauling, im sure you checked but mine had an air shock for hauling heavy loads, one of the 4 rear license plate "bolts"was actually a Schrader valve and cap you could fill with air to raise the back up. I carried my Honda foreman 4 wheeler a few hundred miles no problem, plus with no weight in the back with the shock filled you could get the classic rake. Keep up the good work

Something YT has taught me Angus, twist the rachet strap slightly. Doesn't compromise strength and means it sheds the air better and drastically reduces the flapping that annoys the hell out of you going down the highway.

As a former long haul flatbed trucker, I can confirm this. Twist the strap 180 degrees. Not a full twist; just a half twist. Should have a twist on both sides of the load. This will spoil the airflow over the strap that would cause vibration, and it does NOT compromise the integrity of the strap, nor is a half twist a violation of any DOT safety regulations.

Sorry Angus but the floor pan is actually from a station wagon and the frame is as well. Before aftermarket quarter panels were being produced i used to go out west to Colorado and cut quarters off of station wagons for my 68-72 body style ElCaminos so that I could get rust free sheet metal.

@@elcaminosunlimited I didn’t realize that even after helping Dad narrow and tub his 81. I did learn from his that they are a real pain in the @$$ to fit a big block in. Not sure if that goes for all big block variations but with a blown engine using Hooker super comp headers with fabricated valve covers it was a nightmare to pull off without butchering the firewall,inner fenders and frame rails.

Small block Chevrolet, I've always used either an RPM Air Gap or a Victor/Victor Jr on street cars. The Victor was actually better with midrange AND top end. If you have gears, a single plane will work, gears and a 4/5/6 speed manual or automatic. Single plane intakes can work in a street car , and you don't need an mega reving engine that lives over 6k RPM to get real world benefit from. It depends on a myriad of things, not just how tightly build the engine is.

2:35 the elco's had chrome trim on top of the bed, looks loke someone wanted to delete the trim and shaved the top of the bed side and never re-welded the metal. There should have been a metal peak like at the tailgate that was either pinch welded or folded over itself. I had a friend who found this out the hard way when he decided to shave the drip rails on his old car.

The old Edelbrock SP2P, don't know how many engines I've put those on - mind you, it is a VERY small runner manifold and tends to struggle around 4500rpm - but terrific low end torque and throttle response. Great for something you just want to drive and be pretty easy on gas, relatively anyway, we're still talking old engines and carbs.

11:04 I wouldn't mind seeing how this would affect an I6. I've got a couple of Ford 300s and I plan on swapping their 1bbls out for 4bbls in due time. STock trim, they have a single plane intake 'log', but dual plane and single plane manifolds exist for them. They shouldn't have the vacuum signal oddness described here because of their naturally even firing order, but still.
@JunkyardDigs
@JunkyardDigs 2 жыл бұрын
Those can actually be especially weird because the center cylinders breathe so much easier than the outside ones, and have much different length runners!
@TestECull
@TestECull 2 жыл бұрын
@@JunkyardDigs I can definitely see that on my plugs as is, factory stock. #1 and #6 look lean burned, #3 and #4 look rich fouled, #2 and #5 look perfect. That matches up exactly to where the carb is in relation to those cylinders, with the carb being dead center in the manifold closest to 3/4 and farthest from 1/6. Definitely some uneven A/F distribution going on in there. But I've always chalked that up to the rather conservative, cheap-to-manufacture, intentionally-choking-it-off-to-sell-V8s stock intake log on my engine having been made with zero concern to distributing A/F mix evenly. Something I've noticed with the aftermarket intakes for the 300 I6 is that they are designed around a more even airflow whether single or dual plane, much more kin to what's on the Chrysler 225 Slant Six than what's on the ford 240/300, Chevy 250/292, AMC258, Jeep 4.0, et-al. I do know that, for peak performance on a carb with one of these big inch I6s, you want multiple carbs. 300s REALLY love a tri-power setup with each carb basically feeding its own pair of cylinders., but they need a hell of a cam or some really tiny carbs to take full advantage. In stock/mild builds like my engine is and will be they don't want more than about 425-450CFM total, which is very difficult to meet with three carbs. I'm planning on a single carb setup(Likely a 475cfm Truck Avenger paired with a Comp 260 cam and a 40-thou overbore) and want it to be just as dailyable as it is with the 1bbl it has now. Mook did swap the 250 out of the burnt Nova for a V8. Perhaps you could do a hotrod build on that engine and share some more tech tips with waking up the I6s in these old rigs. If massaged right they'll make the power of a V8 with 20-30% less fuel used!

I know it's not the loved iconic looking El Camino but I just love the simple boxy early 80s look on some cars. Also appreciate the explanations from Kevin once again.

When are we going to get a "Kevin or Mook" Video? I totally appreciate the "side videos", but the platform (originality) is missing... Totally understand that y'all are busy, but these "repetitive" missing episodes with the "Stars" is hard to consistently follow.

Agreed , it is going away from why I started watching. To professional we need a video every week is nice fore KZbin but not for orginality. Used to be banter and this old car we are trying to start now it is making "episodes"

i spent weeks trying to sort out the brakes on my '64 el camino last spring, it was the rubber brake hoses and lines in the end that needed to be replaced. i love the air-powered vacuum bleeders.
