I just got my weighted vest from Amazon. I was diagnosed with Osteoporosis about a month ago. Nobody said anything about not wearing a weighted vest. I decided to start low weight, 8 lbs., and get higher weight as I get stronger.

I am 63, diagnosed with severe osteoporosis in January 2023. I have 4 confirmed vertebral fractures. I started using trekking poles when I walked in August 2023, added a weighted backpack in October. (We'd bought a tactical vest with weights but it was too big, hurt my shoulders, so we put one of the thin, flat weights in a small backpack, about 6 pounds with the pack itself.) It was tough at first but I knew I needed to do it so I kept at it. I've increased the weight to a total of 13 pounds now, and I can walk up to five miles before I start to "feel it" in a bad way. Part of the problem now is the pack; it's a pack meant for a hydration bladder, so isn't really designed to carry literal dead weight, and I think the straps have stretched out. It is actively uncomfortable to wear, and I do fear I'm doing more harm than good. But it's not the weight itself; it's how I'm carrying it. So I am going to upgrade to a vest that will fit me better asap. Meanwhile though, just want to attest that it is doable, I'm clearly stronger which is critical in fracture prevention, and though I hadn't been using the pack for that long when I had a second DEXA in January 2024, my spine score was significantly better (14%). (There's some disagreement re: the accuracy of DEXA in measuring really severe cases, but I believe I actually am strengthening my bones.) I also do farmer's carry, currently with 84 pounds (42 pounds in each hand,) which is supposedly to be particularly good for loading the spine and strengthening the core. It might not have anything to do with anything, but a month ago my car was hit by a speeding driver who ran a red light. My car was totaled, and though no one was badly hurt, thankfully, I was hurled into the driver's side door with some force. My ribs are still tender but nothing broke. Two years ago I was afraid of being jostled in a crowd--I mean, I fractured L1 while crossing a 2 pound weight across my body slowly, fractured T12 while on an easy run. It's not just bones, it's lack of core strength, lack of muscle to protect the bones, stabilize the spine. So you'd think being hurled into my door would ribs first would jolt my spine good, but I never even felt a twinge in my back, except as the pain from my ribs radiated around. And people with osteoporosis have fractured ribs from a sneeze. So, like I say, could be just lucky (or God,) but I did read that people who walk away from gnarly accidents (debris from my car was strewn 30-40 feet,) are usually fit. I know my core is much stronger than it was, and I know walking with weight on my back has had a lot to do with that. 😅

New subscriber here. I’m not quite 50, will be 46 soon, but I’m determined to lose fat and get in the best shape ever before 50 and despite perimenopause!! I just started walking with a weighted vest last week and I’m loving it! I went with 10% of my current weight. Hopefully it won’t be too heavy when I get down to goal. I’m looking forward to watching your channel. You are my “goal body!”

I'm turning 63 shortly and was diagnosed with osteoporosis a year ago. I'm taking supplements and have been strength training with progressively heavier weights. Recently I bought a jumprope for impact cardio, along with a 12# vest to use while walking. It's not clear why you think this is inadvisable for those already diagnosed with osteoporosis, but I'm not a stranger to exercise and am introducing the vest gradually and carefully (it's less than 8% of my current weight) so don't *think* it's likely to cause harm.
@BOOM50Fitness
@BOOM50Fitness 2 ай бұрын
Hi! It's not that I think someone with osteoporosis should not use a weighted vest, it's that someone recently diagnosed with osteoporosis should get approval from their doctor. If it's early stages and has not progressed, most doctor's would agree that a weighted vest could strongly benefit you. However, if it is late stages, like for someone in their 80s, a doctor would probably not recommend. I think what you are doing is perfect. Keep up the great work and thank you so much for watching! xo

I’ve been using a weighted vest for about a month. I’m only 43 but went through premature menopause and am doing all I can to prevent osteoporosis/osteopenia (which my mom has). I started with 12 lbs, which is about 8% of my body weight and will probably move up to 15-16 pounds once the weather cools off this fall. I have only been wearing the vest on my walks, but will definitely start incorporating it into my strength training workouts too!

Hi Kristi! I love to hear that you started using a weighted vest. It will definitely help prevent osteopenia/osteoporosis. I think that is a great idea to stick with the 12lbs. and then bump up a little in the fall. It's so hot here in NYC that I have only been wearing mine if I am working out inside. Let me know how it goes wearing it while strength training. Don't be surprised if your heart rate goes up more than without it. It really takes training to the next level. Not counting calories is setting yourself up for failure. Everything about human physiology is tied to calories. You can't build muscle without calories, you can't lose fat without a calorie deficit. And most of all you can't out exercise a poor diet. So if you don't know what you are intaking there is no way to know if your weight loss journey will be effective. The number one key to weight loss or fitness in general is motivation. If you aren't motivated or committed to achieving your goals, that is where failure happens, not counting calories.
