I'm super excited for BABYMONSTER'S first release, I love what I've seen so far and I think this group has so much potential. The only thing that worries me is if Ahyeon's controversy followers her around during her career.
A few months back, controversy erupted over a video uploaded featuring a-hi-n, a member of Y G's BABYMONSTER. The video, posted on social media, showcased her performing at Hanlim Arts High School. Despite her engaging performance, a cloud of concern was cast by an allegation that a-hi-n used a racial slur during her act. Observant viewers alleged that they distinctly heard her use the n-word, which sparked a significant backlash amongst fans.
The video rapidly gained traction, with a-hi-n facing immediate criticism from fans and internet users. Some even asked for her removal from the group, with many voicing their disappointment at her causing controversy even before her official debut.
I love what I've seen from babymonster so far, and I'm so excited to hear their music, but I'm a little unsure on how much this incident might impact the group, and a-hi-n's career, so in this video I'm gonna be reacting to different opinions on the matter, and give my two cents. On all k-pop.com, a comment was posted that gained a lot of traction, with mixed opinions. It said the following.
A couple things here. She absolutely does say the N word. I couldn't tell what she was saying listening to the audio itself, but when you look up the lyrics for that section of Feeling Myself, you can see it, and you can absolutely tell that she's saying it once you parse it out.
She's allegedly been learning English for over 10 years and at this point is fluent, plus she's under Y G, a company known for rapping, and she has a passion for rapping herself; so I don't really know how she WOULDN'T know about the N word in American music. Even if she didn't necessarily know it beforehand, it's just basic logic to look up words you don't know, if you're going to perform a song.
Y G, and really all entertainment companies, desperately need to include basic training if they're gonna promote rappers; you can't interact with rap, an intrinsically black art form, and not educate your idols about basic history and black culture surrounding it. It's Y G's fault as much as it is a-hi-n's, but people need to stop acting like she did nothing wrong. korean companies by now should already know songs with n-word should be avoided at all costs.
I'm sure people will give her a pass because people want to see "all seven" debut. Also the fact they're under Y G helps. Hybe is another label that could probably get away with it. If it was any other agency, fans would literally send protest trucks to have the person removed. But they come from Y G, one of the big 3 so I don't think it will really affect BABYMONSTER as much. If the group want to go on to be a global hit it may be a different story. The thing is with this whole situation, is that THERE ARE TWO VERSIONS OF THIS SONG. It is very easy to sing the one without the n word. It is also VERY EASY to just skip over the word.
K-pop has to get rid of this “rap persona, that these idols have. No one believes these heavily beautified idols are “hard” yet every rapper has to act like they came out of the mean streets of Bu-san. When you try to imitate a culture so hard, this stuff is bound to happen and it keeps happening. It’s time to stop. I find it really appalling that companies don’t sit trainees down on their first day and say these are words you can't use.
They're slurs, so Don’t use them. It’s literally that simple. Ideally they’d be educating them on rap culture and how it came to be but that’ll be possible only in a perfect world. Unfortunately this clip will definitely have an impact on her career. If Y G has any plans for baby monster to go global, this will drag her and the group down.
She’s still a child, and I don’t think she is a racist person and I don’t think she would ever do something like this again; however, it’s not a victimless mistake and apologizing's the right thing to do. Forgive her and move on. it doesn't matter if it was on purpose or not. But you shouldn't ruin her career over it. Don't hate her and cyberbully her, she should be educated instead of hated on.
I've seen so many people on tiktok and twitter defending ahyeon for her actions. saying something like that is not okay. she is fluent in english, learned hiphop history, and learned from previous mistakes from seniors so fans shouldn't give excuses. i really hope she learns from her mistake to become the best version of herself. So that's my reaction, tell me what you think below and let me know what topics you'd like to cover next, hope you all have a great day!
