And something like this was a no brainer to do worn injectors can kill an engine and total it if they suddenly fail and destroy the block then you are really screwed the injectors shouldn't have this problem being freshly rebuilt

Rick below mentioned fuel return line , absolutely correct the pt fuel system is very sensitive to return back pressure. Run it into an open drum. Also check your tank breather

Check the inter/ after cooler. If they get clogged with carbon, it makes them smoke and lose power. Had this issue on my fishing boat with a KTA 19.

I'm gonna say the same as others and check the fuel. Last time at work (we run heavy equipment for a steel plant) that we had 2 or more machines with similar issues, it turned out to be clogged injectors from contaminated fuel. We had fuel delivered with algie that contaminated the whole fuel tank, then the fuel truck then our machines.

I would first check the fuel return line going back to the tanks for restriction since it only over fuels at high RPM. Air filter would be my next check.

The first JD 4240 through 4860 had duel air filters. Changing the outer filter only confused many. The inner filter would get dirty also and cause extreme black smoke. Changing the innner air filter would cure the air pollution issue. Big Buds may have primary and secondary air filters like the fuel system.

There are low flow injectors and high flow injectors, I found this out when running a KTA on the Dyno and was getting crazy horsepower and it kept climbing, got the injectors and fuel pump matched and it was back to about 625 H P. This happened after the injectors were overhauled. Cheers my friend

I would try and check the fuel and maybe change fuel filters just as a precaution. I have no experience with farming but in the trucking industry bad fuel can hit you quick.

We had a machine that did an injector. Thought we would be smart and put a full set of injectors in. Couldn’t get it to go again so new injector pump and all sorts thrown on it. Turns out the brand new injector were faulty! So frustrating. I feel your pain Nick

I would make sure air filters are clean, then take a fuel sample and check fuel weight. 2 tractors same problem sounds like fuel

Had are 955L and are 955L 13x did something close to that it was water in the fuel we bought that morning at the local fuel station. Sadly it scorched all 8 injectors between the two loaders. Best of luck, Godspeed

If yiur fuel quality is ok Check the air cleaners Check the turbo including crossover. Axial and radial measurements Cut the filters open and check for engine damage. If all good big sigh of relief. If debris identify material, remove cam covers and check followers and cam if steel. Check the after cooler. Get a boost reading steady state and check the delta p I would expect 2psi there's no actual spec. Are you setting inner base circle method.... 304 thou on the dial indicator if I recall correctly These are great engines if you service injectors every 5000hours and fuel pump every 10. Dont screw up the fuel pressure, Just leave as standard. Dont mix cpl parts. Make sure the parts from the old engine are the same cpl K19 are still made out of seymour and are available. Plenty of these still running here in australia.

I know it sounds like a really stupid suggestion, and you have likely already checked, but have you tried running it with the air filter/filters out? Looks to me like its struggling for air....esp with the way it cleans up at idle and just smokes under load... The fuel is likely correct and its just getting starved for air, does it feel down on power at all? Could just be a dusty season and both have clogged up? Or maybe you have serviced both tractors recently with a different brand of filter which blocks up alot quicker than normal in the dusty conditions? Like i say you have likely already checked this, but if not, its got to be worth just pulling the filters right out for one pass just to see if it sorts the problem? Maybe if your reading this comment you can like it up so it gets seen. Hope your able to get it sorted soon, nothing worse than a breakdown mid season, never go wrong in the shed do they!!

Unfortunately everyone is saying you guys need newer tractors… guys it’s not that easy to just go buy “new ones”. They just came off of two years of terrible drought and hail. Would they like to buy a quad… obviously. I feel lots of commenters are not understanding how farming and farmers actually work… you don’t just go “Buy” a new tractor cause it’s broken lol. Do I think they need to move on to a quad… probably, but I don’t wanna see the buds ever leave they are the reason i subscribe to this channel years ago. But I will say planting is the most crucial time of the year for making money on the backend so inevitably you can’t afford breakdowns off this magnitude one after another. As a farmer I completely understand your situation and how frustrating it is. Take care

might seem odd but I've experienced a planting season that didn't seem that dusty but all 3 tractors took to smoking one at a time.... an 886, a 1066, and a newer case . and after trying fuel filters and all sorts of other things it ended up being the month-old air filters. it took like 6 guys and almost 2 days to figure that out...... they had just been changed... no one thought it could be that.

On a Cummins with PT fuel pumps if they start smoking like that under load like both your Buds are doing it's not the fuel it's in the injectors themselves. More than likely they'll have a bad set of springs or tips and seats on them. Rebuilding old Cummins injectors is getting to be a lost art anymore. One of the best places still is Pittsburgh power. They're expensive but worth the cost Bruce there has forgotten more about Cummins engines than Chelsea Cummins himself.

@haroldbenton979 I heard an interview with Bruce Mallinson of Pittsburgh Power a few years ago, and he talked extensively about a big problem with rebuilt injectors. Poor quality control in parts was the point of failure he was seeing the most. I'll bet things haven't improved.

True, cummins pt pump rooms are getting harder to come by. We have a pump room at our facility that is very busy. Quality is excellent. Problem is we are on the other side of the world. I think that locations like Alabama that service the gulf would be very experienced in pt fuel system servicing due to the crew boat market which still runs a high volume of k series marine engines

There is an old Polish proverb: "Diesel, musi dymić", which means "Diese, have to fume" :) . The black smoke usual means injectors problems and this is regular situation with old diesel engines here, in Europe. If there is too much fuel (when you rapidly press a throttle) or it is not spread correctly (injectors malfunction) then it is not able to burn in the right way and you have a black soot in the fumes. I guess.... :D

Both Buds have the same issue at the same time can only be one thing, and that would be Fuel as it is the only thing that has been added. Very unlikely that both tractors injectors fail at the same time unless it is Fuel.

Sorry you're having this emoke problem ( even though it looks COOL 😎 😂 ). Don't beat up on yourself. Injector remanufacturers don't usually make a **** of the job; it doesn't do their business any good. Maybe check out your fuel...age, frosted, wrong type, filters full of contaminants, water....... Look around, you might be surprised or relived!!

I feel your pain, my 2.0 tdi Audi has 2 bad injectors.. these are pricey as hell, i can only image what those on Big bud cost.. and if you find them. Crappy timing for them to be causing issues, hope you've resolved it by the time i'm writing this! God bless!
