There is a real point you are missing here though, there are thousands and thousands of people who have paid this tax in the past and are liable for this tax in the future, I am one of them and I am watching with very keen interest. The advice I have been given by my chartered accountant differs greatly from the advice Rayner has said she has received. Once one of two properties is placed on the market for sale you can not state it is your primary residence as clearly at the point of sale it is not and at the point of sale the tax is due. It is also irrelevant who was living where under those circumstances. Also if and when the HMRC do get involved in deciding a primary residence one of the major things they look at is where the majority of any family nucleus lives with particular reference to the children. I think you will find Rayner is in all sorts of trouble here.

@@icarus877 I recall certain types being equally confident that Starmer and Rayner had broken lockdown rules. These comment pages were filled with seemingly sound arguments. And dire consequences were predicted for the Labour leadership. But it was all just gas dressed as reason. Starmer is confident that Rayner has done nothing wrong. And he certainly does know the law.

Honestly I think this is good for Labour. It shows how out of touch the Tories are. I think also many times even if a Tory supporter knows the incidences are not equivalent it still gives a them licence to say "Oh well they're all the same." People are extremely reluctant to say "I know they're more corrupt than Labour, but I support them anyway."

Great move by Angela, the police will either say there is no fraud (thus shutting down this nonsense) or there has been an accidental fraud please pay back the two grand (thus shutting down this nonsense). As for the electoral register again it’s just another technicality, one I found myself in when I separated from someone a decade ago.

..the residence issue is a non-starter. Electoral law states that any electoral register offence MUST be reported no later than TWO YEARS after any offence was supposedly committed....HMRC will have been all over this any way...so, no win tories lose again!!!!

Even if the property had become a second home, there are still a number of factors that apply before any tax is due: The ratio of how long it was a first home v how long as a second home, reduces tax. The amount spent on improvements reduces the tax. Plus, even if there is a taxable gain, there is a tax free allowance that can reduce the tax to zero. For example: the house was sold for £48k more than the purchase price. So if £40k was spent on improvements and there was an £8k tax free allowance back then, no tax would be due.

No one should be allowed to buy his council house in the first place. If you can afford to buy the house that means essentially your financial situation has changed and you should rent or buy from the private market. Leave the council houses to the ones in need. Why sell a council house and then complain they aren't enough?

Blame the Tories for that, they brought in right to buy, under Thatcher, and refused to allow the councils to build replacements, whilst reducing funding for the councils by the same amount of money as they received from selling the houses. I disagree, I don't think it makes me think they're all the same at all - if anything, it demonstrates the polar opposite - the disparity between the background of Angela Rayner and the elite privilege of the men pursuing this as an 'issue'. It makes me even more supportive of Angela and I love her reaction - "you show me yours...etc." as we all know who really is playing the system to their maximum benefit and it's not the likes of Angela Rayner.

I suspect Angel is guilty Why would her neighbours say she is being mendacious. I live very near to where Angela lives. She has gone from rags to riches maybe similar to me. Sometimes I think she is too bitter and outspoken. The problem is often people who live by the sword often die by it. It is so strange that Starmer has not asked to see her proof? That seems incongruous. I suspect she may have told the legal advisers the story she has told us all. They would then say she is not liable for capital gains tax. However that would be their decision on her possible lies

Labour should be constantly reminding the public about the £37bn that the Tories gave to Dido Harding for the useless Track and Trace system, none of which has been recovered. Particularly apposite just now when we are spending LESS than that on a new Nuclear Submarine....

@@chatham43 I didn't say anything about the completely necessary but ill timed lockdowns. I was talking about Track and Trace which literally did nothing more than what the NHS already had. Also the (properly working) equivalent of Dido Harding's efforts could have been purchased from Germany for £1m ie less than 0.1% of the money we wasted.

For balanced reporting I expect this channel to chase up the accuser demanding an apology if there is no prosecution. Will the accuser then also stand down. Just suggesting. Just asking.
