Hi folks, Apophis only needs a little push in the wrong direction to alter its safe miss past us on Friday the 13th 2029, in order to become a real problem. I would feel a lot more comfortable if we had an Asteroid Moving Module attached to Apophis already. Watch the NOVA Episode "Asteroid: Doomsday or Payday", or, read about " Mighty Mouse", ACME International's Asteroid Moving Module in "Voison's Boomerang". Sincerely, Robin

Hi Robin, Thanks for sharing your thoughts and recommendations! You're absolutely right-while Apophis is currently projected to safely pass Earth, any unexpected changes could potentially alter its course. The idea of an Asteroid Moving Module is intriguing and highlights the importance of being prepared for any future threats. I'll definitely check out the NOVA episode and look into "Voison's Boomerang" for more insights. It's fascinating (and a bit nerve-wracking) to think about how we might need to intervene with such technologies in the future. Stay curious and thanks for contributing to the discussion!

NASA would never tell us if it was going to hit. Can you imagine the chaos?? I find it interesting it was only discovered 20 years ago when its been out there all along, ( and by people that don't work for NASA). Why is that?????
@SciQuestOrgАй бұрын
I get where you're coming from - the idea of keeping something like that secret could definitely stir up fear. But from what I've read, NASA actually has a lot of transparency when it comes to tracking asteroids, including Apophis. They’ve been closely monitoring it since it was discovered, and constantly updating the public on its trajectory. The reason it wasn’t found earlier is more about the technology and resources available back then. As for it being discovered by non-NASA astronomers, that’s pretty common - many space discoveries come from all around the world. It’s a global effort!

That’s a really selfless thought, and it shows you have a big heart for wanting to help others. But don’t forget, even in the toughest times, your life matters too. You never know what the future holds - things could change in ways you can’t predict right now. While it's amazing to want to protect others, it’s also important to take care of yourself and keep hope alive. You’ve got plenty of life ahead of you, and who knows what great things could still come your way!

NASA doesn't calculate for unplanned events which is generally when disasters happen, what if that asteroid hits one of those geosynchronous satellites and knocks Apophis off course, it is passing close enough and the world has a lot of satellites up there. Just like a pool table, a satellite acting like a cue ball at 7000 MPH hitting the eight ball (Apophis) and deflecting it towards Earth.
@SciQuestOrgАй бұрын
I see where you're coming from, and it’s definitely an interesting thought! While the chances of something like a satellite deflecting Apophis are super slim, space is unpredictable, right? NASA has run tons of calculations on its trajectory, but yeah, there's always that "what if." Still, those satellites are tiny compared to Apophis, and it would take a pretty specific hit to knock it off course. But who knows, space is wild! Let’s hope those NASA folks have covered all the bases. 😅

Every time Apophis passes earth, it's trajectory must be affected to the point where the next time it passes, it will be closer and closer, and at one point it will inevitable hit earth . Considering it passed earth very close in 2024, i believe it's trajectory was affected and it will hit earth.

Thanks for the information. Planet Hercolubus is approaching Earth, it is 5 or 6 times larger than Jupiter, it is a giant that will cause: earthquakes, floods, cyclones, ... and there is nothing that can divert it. To save ourselves from the cataclysms that will come, there is only one way: the elimination of our psychological defects. The key is in the book "Hercolubus or Red Planet" by V.M. Rabolú. I get the frustration! It’s easy to feel like starting over when we hear about potential threats like Apophis. Thankfully, NASA’s got us covered, and the chances of anything catastrophic happening in 2029 are extremely slim. Actually, scientists have closely monitored Apophis' trajectory, and based on current data, it's not expected to hit Earth in 2029 or 2036. While Earth’s gravity will slightly alter its path during its close flyby in 2029, NASA has ruled out the possibility of an impact during those years. Rest assured, they’re keeping a close eye on it!

I think you're referring to asteroid mining, which is something a lot of scientists and companies are exploring! However, Apophis isn’t one of the main targets for mining. The idea with Apophis is mostly about tracking its trajectory and understanding its potential risks. There are other asteroids out there with valuable minerals that researchers have their eye on for potential mining in the future!

@SciQuestOrg2 ай бұрын
Thanks for your comment! There's been some confusion around the dates, but as of the latest scientific predictions, Apophis is expected to make a close flyby of Earth in 2029, not in 2027. The asteroid has been closely monitored by astronomers, and while it will pass very close to Earth, current data suggests it won’t collide with our planet. The mention of 2036 is another close approach, but again, the risk of impact is considered extremely low. Scientists continue to track Apophis, so if there are any changes in the predictions, they’ll let us know well in advance!

It's only 3 football fields, doesn't it seem like a nuke would blow it up?
@SciQuestOrgАй бұрын
While blowing up an asteroid like Apophis with a nuke might sound like a good idea, it’s actually much more complicated. Even though Apophis is "only" the size of three football fields, a nuke could break it into smaller pieces. But instead of one big impact, we’d be dealing with multiple smaller fragments still heading towards Earth, which could cause widespread damage. Scientists are working on more effective ways, like deflecting it with a spacecraft, to prevent a catastrophic impact.
