Apple's new intelligence features promise exciting upgrades to every iPhone and MacBook, but these features might not launch in Europe due to the Digital Markets Act (DMA). In this video, I shortly talk about the DMA, why this is a problem for Apple and discuss a few of my thoughts on the European tech world.
Join me to discuss how these regulations could shape the future of AI and tech innovation.

How do you think regulations like the DMA will affect our future development? I'd love to read your perspective 👇🏻

Living in the UK this is just another example of where I have to wait and see if this will impact us or not. I loved being part of the EU but now it seems like any sort of legislation that comes out might be applied here or might not. I don't care what anyone says, it was A LOT easier all round before we left. SMH

I can imagine. I didn’t talk about the UK in this video, because that makes it even more complex, as you mentioned!

I think Apple’s ”threat” is more to force EU to give more clarification. What exact services and data it would cover. Reading through the new regulation (it’s very fuzzy) and to my understanding, most of it will not affect Apple. And will not affect most features. The interoperability with messaging they already solved. There’s already API in place to let 3rd party developers use the features in new devkit. I think this will far more affect f.i. Facebook. But it will be interesting to see what happens.

That was my first impression too. I hope that this is only about the clarification, as you state, and doesn’t really lead to the EU being excluded from future features. I also think that this is affecting not only Facebook, but many smaller startups negatively that maybe can’t spend that much time on complying with the new regulations. Let’s see how this develops. Thanks for your comment!

As an EU citizen, computer science graduate, and legal advisor, I can see both sides. I see a company that adopts an incremental updates approach, pressured by investors, now claiming to be slowed down in its innovative path by a market with more human rights, which promotes equality of opportunity and transparency. Of course, a tech giant is upset when it can’t trample on small businesses and startups. Let’s be reasonable: we all want features, but not at the cost of our rights. It’s not a good tradeoff. Sure, let them innovate, but we should take our time analyzing the implementation process. I really trust the EU's sublime legislation.

Very nuance and insightful comment. Thank you. I agree with protecting innovation through smaller companies, but am still concerned about the lack of global European tech companies. But legislation is obviously only a part of that, followed by economical, social and cultural reasons.

Nice perspective. I really appreciate EU’s efforts to protect the end user’s rights. Even though they do a lot of mistakes, I think tech giants are also not coming with the best intentions… I think both parties see each other as rivals instead of thinking they push each other to be better… like a good friend 😁 Also EU makes a lot laws but i don’t think they enforce those laws. They are just slowing honest businesses. The ones do violations are usually getting away with it until a whistleblower comes out..

True. I also appreciate the efforts to level the playing field but, as you already say, those heavy regulations often affect smaller business much more than those for which they were designed. In this case, I am curious how this arm wrestling between Apple and the EU ends.

@@mehmatrix yes, some of the great options EU regulations (or Apple’s attempt of staying ahead of EU) has given me; -the fact I can run Spark as my default mail app -duckduckgo as my default search engine -and now Brave as my default browser That apps can link to pay subscriptions outside App Store, I think helps especially smaller developers. But we’ll see how this affects the AI AI

I think people should vote with their wallets. If they don’t like Apple, then Android does plenty of the things the EU DMA is trying to achieve Apple is a business so they will get the memo. Right now the EU is trying to turn the iPhone into Android
