Cam Chancellor was the one that jumped over the linemen towards the end of the video. He actually did it twice, back-to-back . The first time, they called it a foul and stopped the play, because you're not allowed to use linemen to help you jump over like that... only, on review, he didn't touch them, he just jumped over the whole line. So.. re-play the down again.. Same result. For a Legion of Boom highlight reel, this was surprisingly light on showcasing their big hits. They had insane amounts of interceptions and stuff, which this showed, but they hurt a lot of people. Didn't play very dirty or anything, just the energy level and intensity the whole team was constantly at was something special for those couple years. You may have noticed the crowd noise setting a new record in the Seahawks Stadium (or affectionately the "Hawk's Nest") was cranking at 137+dB during that game. Routinely it was 125-130db throughout those years, making offenses that were visiting have to come up with handsignals for calling signs, because even screaming in a tight huddle, they couldn't hear eachother at all. The crowd caused delay-of-game penalties all the time, and once they started seeing their ability to actually have an impact on the game, they went nuts, and became known as "The 12th Man" on the field. Between the Legion of Boom and the 12th Man, whenever it was game time, Seattle fans would be gearing up to watch or attend the game, to "Rock out with their hawks out." 🤣

Really loved this seahawk era. Their fullback at the time Michael Robinson used to have the “Real Rob Report” on KZbin where he would vlog the locker room and I fell in love with how much chemistry and fun that seahawk team had. There's an old saying in football "Offense sells tickets, but defense wins championships". So yes you are absolutely correct in that a good defense is important. You could argue its the more important side of the ball, especially in playoff times when teams sometimes have more than a week to prepare.

The reason why Legion of Boom was heavily requested was because Sherman, Chancellor, Thomas, and Wagner where all one of the greatest at their positions in the 2000's. All of them are Hall of Famers sooner or later. Also the comment about the Defense matters. The 85 bears had a pretty average offense but their defense is always hand in hand with the Legion of Boom. Bears almost did it again in 2006 with a pretty bad offense. But had Urlacher, Briggs and others.

one thing that gets overlooked is just how powerful those guys were. the hit at 8:10 was against rob gronkowski, who is 6'6 and hovered around 265-275 lbs throughout his career. the legion of boom were not scared to put their body on the line when it came down to it.

Offense usually steals the show but watching your defense dismantle the other team can be equally as entertaining. An elite edge rusher that can beat the O line and wreck havoc in the opponents' back field can easily win you games. I absolutely love seeing stats like a team having -10 rushing yards because your D line is so dominant. Aaron Donald is currently the best defensive player in the league

The Legion of Boom were one of the greatest D's of all time with Kam and Sherm getting a majority of the accolades, but my fave was Earl Thomas. Dude was balls-to-the-walls 110% of the time. Another fantastic player was Cliff Avril who never gets enough love. I'm thankful to've been able to watch them at their peak. BTW- one thing about that Super Bowl against Peyton Manning that didn't seem to've been mentioned was the fact that the Broncos' offense that year was the highest-scoring offense in NFL history. Most pundits thought that Denver's all-time-great offense would cut through Seattle like a buzzsaw. Only a few had the foresight to see that high-powered offense getting obliterated by the LoB buzzsaw. The final score was 43-8. Defense does indeed win championships.

4:56 2000 Baltimore Ravens is the epitome of that sentiment, defense wins championships. the 2000 Ravens is another one of the all time great defenses to check out along with the '85 Bears and the 70s Steelers.

Yes!! I saw your announcement yesterday alluding to recent defenses, and hoped it would be this one. Here's a bit more context to the LOB, from a Seahawks fan who grew up watching them (keep in mind that this may certainly be biased, in that case haha) The Seahawks of this era were a throwback to older styles of play. As you saw in the media segments, there was a common conception that offense was becoming increasingly more important than defense, due to a growth in athleticism and rule changes which favored that side of the ball. The Seahawks under head coach Pete Carroll *gum chewing intensifies* instead prioritized a run-heavy offense with Marshawn Lynch, with major contributions from the versatile and VERY mobile quarterback Russell Wilson. Their defense was premised upon physicality and aggressiveness. Kam Chancellor was an absolute force at strong safety. He was perhaps the largest and hardest-hitting SS during his time in the league. I'm sure it was apparent from watching the video, but he was built more like a linebacker than a prototypical player for his position. While typically seen as the least "skilled" of the three (relatively speaking: he still made 4 Pro Bowls) he was CERTAINLY the most feared. His presence alone contributed to offenses not wanting to throw over the middle of the field. If you two enjoy watching the "pure" highlight side of football, he's definitely the most fun to watch. Unfortunately, it's possible that his style of play contributed to an early retirement. Around 2017, he began to have neck injuries which derailed his career, and he left football the next year. Still, today he is the most loved member of that defense in Seattle (which is partially due to the antics of the following two members). As a side note, I once served him when he came into the salad shop I was working at. I was internally freaking out but didn't want to be annoying, so I made as if I didn't recognize him until he left the store. Afterwards, while I served the next woman I was wigging out to my coworkers about how he was my favorite player and so on. She then smiled at me and mentioned that she was his wife and would tell him my compliments. All around a great dude. Earl Thomas was perhaps the greatest safety during his time in the league. He was a little undersized, but his main skills were his range and instinct for the ball. As I'm sure you two saw, he had an uncanny knack for knowing where to be at all times. In addition to being a harder hitter than his size would indicate, his football IQ and coordination gave him the distinction of being called a "ballhawk" --> this nickname being given to any player that shows an ability to get to the ball and intercept or disrupt many passes. Unfortunately, near the end of his career he became VERY erratic and had an extremely ignominious end to his time on the team in which he publicly flipped the bird to his head coach. After this, he played for the Ravens, but was cut after more shenanigans and off-the-field problems. It was a pretty stunning turnaround for a guy who was seen for most of his career as a level-headed player. Personally, my pet theory is that he might be suffering from the early stages of CTE. Doesn't excuse his behavior, but it would be a really sad end to an otherwise exemplary career. I don't know if the Pro Football Hall of Fame has a morality clause, but if so I'm not certain that he will make the cut. Richard Sherman was easily the most controversial of the three, and stood out with other hotheads on the team like Michael Bennett and Brandon Browner. He rubbed many people the wrong way due to his arrogant and flippant attitude towards opposing players, coaches, media...really anyone, ha. In his words, the reason why he had such a massive chip on his shoulder was due to growing up in really crappy circumstances in South-Central LA, and being undervalued by every NFL team when it came draft time. He fell to the 5th round (out of 7) in the 2011 draft, and this perceived disrespect became the driving force for his career. His style of play was extremely physical, and he often was flagged for excessive contact. Despite this, he was otherworldly skilled. He was unusually tall for a corner at 6'3", and while not having standout straight-line speed, he had great hands, body control in the air, and really sound technique from the line of scrimmage all the way down the field. He eventually became dangerous enough to where opposing quarterbacks would simply stop throwing the ball to the receiver he was covering (I will caveat this by saying that he was criticized for staying on one side of the field, rather than shadowing the other team's best wide receiver). His antics, however, were frequently a headache or source of amusement for Seattle fans, and many opposing fanbases HATED him for the same reasons. Along with Thomas, his post-career life has been marred by legal issues, and I do wonder if he is also having psychological issues from repeated TBIs. Players not mentioned in this video were also instrumental to the crafting of one of the probably top-5 defenses of all time, including Bobby Wagner (who by now is in the running for top-5 greatest middle linebacker ever), KJ Wright, Bennett, and a rotating cast of solid defensive linemen.

What you said about defense is absolutely correct. 2015 the Denver broncos team won a Super Bowl based off of their amazing defense that carried them all season with the aging Payton manning. The current 49ers offense is elite because of their playmakers, but this year their defense is what really saved their season, giving their offense short fields a lot of the time because of their elite defense

The 1985 Chicago Bears had the best single season defense in NFL history and remain the defense that all other defenses are measured by. They helped transform the NFL from being a sterile conservative league to a league with larger than life personalities. They pitched back to back shutouts in the playoffs, which has never happened before, and won the Super Bowl 46 to 10.

The Legion of Boom is one of the greatest defensive groups in NFL history. Kam Chancellor, Richard Sherman, Earl Thomas, were all guys who had Hall of Fame levels of talent and skill. Kam's career was cut short by injury and Earl went off the rails mentally which is extremely unfortunate, but they were one of the greatest secondaries ever assembled.

Great reaction. Almost every team at some point has some core group of athletes that create an "identity" together that becomes larger than life. Some other defensive squads worth looking at" The Pittsburg Steelers defensive line dubbed "The Steel Curtain"; the Chicago Bears 1985 defense - considered by many the best defensive squad of all time; and the Dallas Cowboys' "Doomsday Defense" - all great defensive squads worth looking at. Not a Seahawks fan but you gotta respect that team. Such a shame they didn't complete the repeat. What a team! With the way the rules are now, it's hard to imagine we will ever see such a dominant defense again. Especially one that carried the offense to a ring and almost a 2nd. Let's not forget they had in my opinion the coolest nickname of any team with perhaps the Steel Curtain being the only other team to come close. Also a little note to you guys. Defense wins championships is a phrase used throughout the US in pro sports. It can be debated whether it's more about offense or defense in various sports. In today's league the truth is that to win it all you probably need to have at least a top 10 defense to compete for a title. Obviously it depends on how good the offense and other aspects are. But for football in particular it is true because the playoffs are in the winter. Although there are a lot of teams that play indoors now. In the past this was not the case as you saw with the ice bowl video and just with the snow and cold that comes in winter. In those conditions it's difficult to throw the ball a lot of times so teams can become reliant on the defense to make a big play or even just force a punt or field goal. Anyway, loved the video! 1976 Steelers defense voted best of all time--and they were great all through the 70s with almost half of the defense inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Nothing like them before or since for long standing defensive greatness.

This Seahawks team was special. The whole unit from the D-Line to the safeties was talented. Zero holes in that defense AND they had excellent chemistry and leadership. When people think “legion of boom” they usually think the Big 3 of Sherman, Chancellor, and Thomas, but there are some players that aren’t highlighted but we’re still a big a part of that defense being as menacing as it was: Bobby Wagner (middle linebacker), KJ wright and Bruce Irving (outside LBs), Malcom Smith (Backup LB that stepped up in big moments and won Super Bowl MVP), and Byron Maxwell and Brandon Browner who played the Corner back position opposite to Sherman. All those guys played there parts extremely well and made it so the 3 main guys could focus on doing THEIR jobs and not have to worry about covering their teammates mistakes

As a life long Colts fan, Peyton's QB greatness only equated to one super bowl win for the Colts in his 14 seasons in Indianapolis. (Defense is CRUCIAL to winning championships.) Additionally, we've never been to the Super Bowl again after he went to the Broncos. :(

Loved the era of Seahawks football! Recomendations for great Defenses to watch: '85 Chicago Bears, 2000 Ravens, 2002 Buccanears, and most importantly the "Steel Curtain" 70's Pittsburgh Steelers. Recomendation on great individual players: Derrick Thomas (Linebacker/Pass rusher), Reggie White (Defensive Lineman, holds the NFL record for most career sacks to this day), Jack Lambert (meanest player on that Steel Curtain defense), Dick "Night Train" Lane (defensive back that pretty much MADE the NFL make rules to protect wide receivers, lol), and James Harrison (Linebacker/pass rusher from the modern era).

I was at the game against the 49ers when Kam cracked Vernon Davis near the goal line and we heard the hit clearly up in the nosebleed section. Kam had some hit I’ve never seen a guy his size do. He flattened an offensive lineman on Arizona who had a running start. You saw him stop the Cleveland RB in full run at him. That’s not normal for a safety. those years of Seahawks football were fun to be a part of.

The LOB had about 5-6 years of being super dominant, so this vid couldn't do them justice. They had a bunch of mean hard hitters, and also super agile guys. And they were the best in-shape defense for that whole time period. Im a Browns fan but like many others it was impossible not to appreciate how awesome they were

Kam is one of the Seahawks greats! He hit so hard, he altered how opponent WR/TE play their game. The 49ers had a TE named Vernon Davis who was a perennial ALL-PRO. In one game Kam laid the BOOM on him and the guy was never the same. He played a handful of seasons after that hit and continued to be an excellent TE... but, whenever the 49ers played Seattle he practically disappeared.

For like 3-4 years we had some good game with you guys. My friends would say “our biggest rivals are the 49ers, the Packers, and the Panthers” in part because at the time the Cardinals and Rams sucked hard at the time. I miss those games back during the LoB and Cam Newton era

If I am not mistaken, that hit on Vernon Davis was the first in a three year series where Vernon got pasted by Kam at least once every game. I imagine it got difficult for Mr Davis to dress for the Seahawks after a while...

The unique thing about the LoB, is that they were all secondary players. Most defenses that are good enough for a long enough time to garner a nickname are usually focused along the D-line or the Linebackers. Sherman, Kam, and the rest were all good players, made better by the addition of the other players around them. Also missing , but just as important was Bobby Wagner, the middle linebacker who would also drop in coverage at time to give the team a different wrinkle. During those times, Seattle was a hard, physical team to play. With Marshawn running the ball, and the LoB on Defense, and yep, the blockers, you felt that game a week after playing it.

I saw the Legion in person against the Bronco's and there were some bad blood between the teams. Players were dropping like flies. Chin straps and helmets were flying like popcorn. The Legion brought the intimidation factor of old school football and they had a level of intensity usually reserved for college rivalries. I'm a Seattle transplant from San Diego but I was never a fan of any San Diego team. The 49'ers are my boys forever. ♥ A fun watch as Damo always says! lol... 😜

5:00 absolutely correct, but it takes a special defense to carry a team to the playoffs without the help of a good offense. Perfect example, the 2000 ravens and the '85 bears. The offensive detriments they had were completely over-shadowed by those defensive units.
