As you said..The safeties need to think. Just as the offense knows which player is their responsibility. But the defense as well knows theirs. The offense KNOWS Cam is coming. Cam already has them beat. Then if a play is read well. Or a small hiccup in offense execution, that's when Cam is his most deadly. You'll notice plays break down and it's survival after that.

Seahawks training camp in 2012 I went with my Mom, sister, and niece. We were lined up at the rail to try to get some autographs. Kam Chancellor was still RELATIVELY unknown at least on a national level, as was his nickname "Bam Bam". He was signing some stuff for fans to our left, and they tend to do a chunk of signings and move down the field, do another chunk, rinse repeat. We happened to be in the section that he walked by to get to the next chunk. I told my niece to yell "Bam Bam" towards him (she was like 5 or 6 at the time). She yelled it out to him and mid signing he snapped his head and eyes up towards us, gave the biggest smile imaginable and said "I'll be right over." He finished signing things for the fans that were there, and sure enough came right over to us and signed a ball for her. Later that day I sent him a tweet thanking him for coming back to sign a ball for my niece. He actually liked and replied to my tweet saying "She was too cute I had to come back for her!"

Im a Seahawks fan and I've met Kam a couple times off the field and he's the complete opposite of his on field persona. Quiet, soft spoken, humble, and kind. He's one of if not my favorite player ever. Him and Marshawn Lynch were the soul of those teams and they gave energy to everyone else, including the fans. The first thing they teach you as a young defensive player is to always wrap up. Most of the best running back highlights happen when defense players “shoulder tackle” and bounce right off. What separates the good from the great defensive players is the fundamentals. Kam could hit as hard as anyone but he also made sure he was wrapping up and taking the person down, even if it wasn’t always the flashiest tackle. Much respect to that type of effort and consistency

I grew up watching Ronnie Lott and the NFL used to use his highlights to promote the game where you could lead with the head on a hit. Thank goodness they adjusted the defenseless player rules from then because Kam Chancellor would've ended more careers than he already did in his day. It was still legal in Kam's time to hit a "defenseless player" with the shoulder and that is what he did with great effect.

There are two different types of safeties: a strong safety usually covers the line of scrimmage or the tight end more, and a free safety, helps more in deep pass coverage. Strong safeties are usually a bit stronger whereas free safeties are more athletic. Kam was definitely a strong safety.

Career lengths do depend a lot on the individual player's quality and propensity for injury but, on the whole, I would agree that pocket quarterbacks have the longest lifespan in the modern NFL. Especially now with all of the rules designed to protect the stars. You will see an older kicker or punter from time to time but, while they aren't generally prone to contact injuries, their careers are always at risk due to the slightest downturn in performance or knee and hip injuries from repetitive leg use. Kickers and punters are probably the first to be kicked to the curb due to poor performance, probably a little unfairly so. Part of it is because of the high leverage situations that they can mess up and part of it is the depth of talent out there at those positions (it's surprisingly deep). Also, people off the street just think they can do a better job which, of course, they can't but this all leads to them getting short leashes which can kill a career (see Cody Parkey and the double doink). By the way Damo, kickers and punters are 2 different things, I think you've been confused by this 😉. Kickers do the place kicks for field goals and extra points. Punters do the drop kicks to flip the field on 4th Down. One or the other will also handle kickoffs and they will be each other's in-game backups but to be NFL caliber at either, you have to do one or the other or your leg will fall off from all the reps you take to get and stay good.

A comment I have on what you said about saying he chose to sling opponents around, at the end of the video. All players are trying to sling opponents after initial contact anyways (or something similar to what you’d do naturally try to do to get someone to the ground). Especially to defend key markers like the down marker, but every yard matters. He’s just able because of the power he plays with, compared to others

One thing that you might guess but was true was that teams had a stunningly poor record *the week AFTER* playing the Seahawks. We'd beat them up so bad with Kam, Legion of Boom AND Marshawn steamrolling that they weren't ready for the next game. I can't find the exact stat, but the year we won the super bowl, teams were something like 1-14 the week after they played us (besides mostly losing to us as well!). Having a finesse, passing team is fun, but honestly, I think having the most physical team in the league is more fun.

There’s a good reason why the Seahawks were called “Legion of Boom.” You had Earl Thomas and Kam Chancellor as your safeties. Richard Sherman and Byron Maxwell at the corner positions. The team broke records that were comparable to the 1985 bears in overall defense, points allowed total yards allowed per game. Which is more impressive considering the time period was in favor of the offense. They had the best tacklers in the game. The hawks were absolutely STACKED at every position to the point where they didn’t have to score too many times to win. They were on the same team as Marshawn Lynch (known as beast mode). The crowd at their home games was also a factor. Because opposing teams couldn’t communicate well with the noise level even through the microphone helmets the team captains wore to coordinate their plans. It was extremely hard winning against the Seahawks, even more so as an away team. The home crowd became known was known as “The 13th Man.” As the presence of crowd noise made that much of a difference in games almost like the defense had a 13th player on the field. (This is where those number 13 flags came from)

Some may argue that even some of the safeties that they have inducted are overrated and shouldn't be in (John Lynch, LeRoy Butler). Chancellor is probably more flash than Hall of Fame substance, but he was a lot of fun to watch.
@zacharyliles8657 Жыл бұрын
"Which position has the shortest average career?" The answer is basically all of them. Besides kicker and punter, there really is no position in American football that is safe from having a massive toll taken on your body. QBs are pretty protected now so they can last longer than they used to, but everywhere else is always just one play away from a career ending injury. There's an old joke among football players that NFL stands for "Not For Long" because the average career length for an NFL player is less than three years
@pyrotechnic96 Жыл бұрын
I think offensive linemen and quarterbacks right now have the greatest potential for long careers. Obviously it's incredibly difficult to even make it to the top let alone stay there but I think the relative lack of value of foot speed on the O-line compared to most other positions gives them an advantage in longevity. QB we'll see. The meta may shift to an all running QB league meaning the ability of older QBs becomes heavily capped.

So the reason that a strong safety is called a strong safety is because whatever side the tight end lines up on is called the strong side. The strong safety usually covers the tight end in coverage which is why you see plays against Gronkowski. The strong safety also helps in blitz on some plays and they do just regular db safety coverage as well

This is a long tweet thread from former Arizona Cardinal's Strong Safety Hamza Abdullah in 2013 that tells the story of how absolutely terrifying Kam "Bam Bam" Chancellor was. This man was a true force to be feared. "We was playing the Seahawks an one of our Tight Ends decided to run a crossing route. I don't know why the coaches put that play in the plan" "He ran this crossing route and started to drift, and on the other side of that drift lived a young man. A 6 foot 5 230 pound young man." "This young man hates visitors. He has a sign on his yard that says..."Trespassers will be Hugged & THUGGED"" "The ball arrived and our Tight End caught the ball. We all jumped in synchronized jubilation, but before our fist pump could reach the sky" "We saw that 6 foot 5 young man. And unfortunately, he saw our Tight End..... MAN LISTEN!!!" "This young man hit this Tight End SO HARD, I swear I saw that TE's soul leave Qwest Field right on that 35 yard line." "He hit him so hard the entire stadium went mute. They didn't want to cheer someone being killed on the field." "He hit that man so hard, the next day our Tight End went on IR with a hamstring injury. How you hit a man so hard, he tear his hamstring?" "That young mans name is/was/is Kam Chancellor. From that point on, I made it known to all of our Tight Ends "don't cross that mans bridge"" I saw him flatback a Linebacker for the Chargers on a kickoff from a standstill. I'm not telling y'all what I think. #HardestHitters" "I'm telling you what I know #HardestHitters"
