What’s going on with the Car Market and Car Prices right now? Alright, without delay.. let's cut through the fluff and get straight to what you need to know about the car market in 2024. Everyone is asking themselves this question: Is NOW a good time to buy a car? Will car prices go down in 2024?
We’ll help you answer that question, for yourself, by covering new car prices, used car prices, including auction prices, and even some news on gasoline prices-yeah, because it seems the politicians are up to playing tired old games with our oil reserves. It’s not about politics, it’s about reality, friends. No sugar-coating, just the raw details and what they mean for you as a car shopper, because we want you to get the best car deal. Let's get rolling.
New vehicle stats are at eye-opening levels right now: an average list price of $47,240 is being hit HARD with an inventory increase of 46% over last year. Dealers right now have cars sitting for an average of 72 days-that's a lot of cars collecting dust, and expensive interest payments are adding up on those floor plan loans. And guess what? This means dealers are hungrier to deal, so you should be pushing hard for discounts, especially if you’re looking for brands like Chrysler, Jeep, and Lincoln.
As far as used car sales goes, The average list price right now is $25,540, down 4% from last year. But don’t let that fool you-prices are still way above what they were pre-pandemic. Inventory’s up, prices are trending down, thanks in part to dealers getting better buys at auctions. It's a buyer’s market out there friends, if you’re savvy, and exercise some courage.

For the best FREE car buying advice available on the planet, make sure you see our Car Buyers Blog on thehomeworkguy.com! Also, by the time you’re done seeing this show, our new book “Buy Smart, Drive Confidently” will be available as an ebook, and an audio book, and links for it can be found on our website, thehomeworkguy.com! The Homework Guy Team has always proudly represented you, the cash car buyer, so let’s roll!
Cash transactions are a dealerships Achilles' heel. Not to mention, it’s always better for our economy when there’s less borrowing and more saving, and fewer people going into significant debt on a rapidly depreciating tangible asset! Yes, you heard me right. A vehicle is NOT an investment. No matter what any finance officer tells you..
Let's quickly revisit the basics before diving in. You should always avoid announcing your intention to pay with cash upon entering a dealership, or when initiating contact with them via email. You might wonder, "But isn't cash supposed to be king?" While that was true years ago, sadly enough that era has passed us by. In today's automotive market, hefty profits are crowned the King, and these royale profits aren't easily garnered from cash transactions, nor from you smart Homework Guy viewers out there! And especially not from anyone who hires us to negotiate their car deal directly!
What absolutely floors me is how many Dodge Chargers and Dodge Challengers are sitting on dealer lots, 2023s, new ones! With big $10,000 MARKUPS. We have a few members working on finding a better Dodge dealer out there who’ll be honest about these cars’ values, and guess what? They’re still looking, because finding an honest Dodge dealer is like finding a unicorn!
Now, here's the recent scoop on Auction Prices, known as MMR, or Manheim Market Report- the Manheim Used Vehicle Value Index dropped like a rock to 199.2 by mid-April, marking a 13.7% year-over-year decline. And before you think it's just a bad month, let's be clear: it’s not just the month; it’s the new trend.
Just remember, lower prices don’t mean you toss your Homework Guy lessons out the window. Do your due diligence, inspect that car, negotiate that price, and as always, don’t rush into a deal. Be smart, be patient, and your wallet will thank you later.

Pulled the trigger on a new car purchase after over three years waiting on the market. Made a "steal" offer which the dealer refused. I (politely) walked away and a week later, right at the end of the month, they called to renegotiate. I held firm on my original offer, and after some back and forth, they accepted. I'm still surprised. So, yes, deals are out there. Inventory is building and so is pressure to move metal!

@jordanf7424 Cool. The reason your Grand Cherokee is still running ok at 150k is because you have a REAL Jeep. As we all know, Jeep died in 2014 when Fiat finalized it's purchase of Jeep. It's funny how all of these sheeple drive these 2015 and later Wranglers, Gladiators, Grand Cherokee's, etc., around, thinking they are driving Jeeps, but are really driving Fiats. RIP Jeep.

As much as I love the civic it needs some replacements like the wheel bearings, shocks, and tie rods. I'm driving a 1987 Ford F-250 XLT With the 6.9 international diesel engine. I said this while the pandemic was happening and tried to warn as many of my friends on Facebook and Instagram not to buy into these dealers who have mark ups on these cars, I said if and when the Market returns, you will be so upside down on the loan that you or the dealer will not do another deal unless they can put your upside deal in. And it won't work because the banks aren't going to work with that. Trucks are way overpriced and I'll keep buying used but I still love this truck and I do a lot of the Maine except oil changes because I live in a studio apartment

My drive is a 2000 Mazda Protege with 198,000 miles. It's like the energizer bunny, it runs and runs. I've had it for four years and everything still works, AC, Auto Transmission, even the electric mirrors. It even passes Clean Air Inspection every year even though it's Grandfathered so it's not mandatory. It looks like a beater and missing a hub cap, and the paint is wearing through to primer, but I decided I like it that way, I live in the City and no one wants to mess with it. It's not worth much, but to me it's priceless.

Earlier in the week, I stopped by a local dealer just to get a look at a new car we are interested in. Last year, their lot was mostly empty. This football field lot had about 30 cars in it. Just a couple of days ago I stopped by and it was difficult for me to move my car around. There were cars stacked up everywhere including the main road into the dealership. Even the aisles were doubled parked with new inventory. I couldn't believe it. In just 12 months they went from about 30 new cars to way way over a hundred cars. Cars were stacked up on the greenways too. They still had those stupid addon sheets in the windows and I thought, no way is that ever going to fly. Thinking about a new car at the end of May when the big push is on for Memorial day and end of month sales targets. I plan on going hard low ball to see how anxious they are to deal. Not going to budge either. But man, this is true about the increased inventory. I have bought from this dealership several times and this is the most cars I have ever seen on their lot.

Car manufacturers and dealers remind me of the old Farside cartoon, where two spiders build a web across the end of a playground slide boldly declaring that if they can catch just one that they'll "eat like kings". Except ... for a long time now, this strategy has actually worked. The spiders have been winning. Only when consumers finally stop paying "Additional Dealer Profit" and insist that manufacturers choose to make volume sales their business model, in order to make their profits, will things get better. And that price increase graph shows exactly how much of a correction needs to be made before consumers should return to the dealerships.

1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Ordered with all the bells and whistles, including a factory installed "Up Country" package that came with a steel-plated guard for the radiator and one for the transmission. Financed the entire purchase price at 8% and told myself I'd never do that again. Took delivery on Thanksgiving Day in 1994, making it 30 years-old this coming Thanksgiving. Haven't had a car payment for almost 26 years, and keep driving this to avoid financing another car. 215,000 miles and the engine still does well on emissions, but the rest of it feels like it is falling apart. I don't let family drive it on the freeway. Had over-heating problems for many years until I finally removed the guard for the radiator. Apparently, the engineers didn't design the cooling system with that guard in mind. The red paint still looks good from living in a garage.

After several test drives, I've narrowed down my choice for my next leased vehicle to the KIA Niro PHEV (top trim, of course). Now, there are about 4 dealers I'm willing to work with and they all have 1-3 vehicles on their lot, and most have been there for over 120 days!! I'm sure they will be happy to have someone to sell them to. Now, it's too soon to terminate my current lease, but by August, the time will be right as I'll only have about 3 lease payments left, so it should be easier for the dealer to buy my used SUV crossover, which only has 9200 miles after 3 years!!!!!

I have a 2013 BMW X5 35d with 94000 miles. Have had many issues recently but hopefully they can all be fixed. The dealers won't give me much at all on a trade-in and of course won't negotiate on a new car price. Plus interest rates on car loans are very high. So will keep my current vehicle as long as I can.

@@KevinHunter 😉 We think so too. We did have to replace the engine cradle, we lucked out being near a car shop fairgrounds thus we found one advertized for well below the dealerships and in excellent condition! Win - win. Had it not been for the pandemic we had targeted an earlier replacement.

@@KevinHunter Hey Kevin, My wife thinks she needs to get a new SUV! I think she should keep her 2007 Eddie Bauer Explorer. I thought a Toyota 4 Runner would be a great replacement. I really have my doubts about any of the new SUV with a 4cyl twin Turbo. We both have V-6 N.A with few fancy electronics. I'm keeping my 2017 till the wheels fall off. Any ideas for the wife who thinks she need a new one? Also, I don't like the High Prices that Toyota or Ford is asking. Both of ours are paid off! Yea!

Still stay away from GM, Stellantis & Ford as their Mexico factories still have poor quality control issues. Soon heavy tariffs will be added to vehicles made in Mexico & China. When shopping make sure to avoid the vehicle identification number that starts with a 3 (Mexico), L (China) & Z (Italy). Auto loans rates are still very high on new & used vehicles.

Chargers and Challengers still hanging on to their $10,000 markups due to the fact that these were two very popular models that have been discontinued (at least in their previous iterations), and these dealers are confident that there will be buyers out there willing to pay a premium to get their hands on the last of this breed.

Let alone the diesel emission garbage they put on these trucks , self destructing them..... Hey, How about we all rally to get the EPA to LIFETIME WARRANTY the diesel emissions BS they throw on them... I mean, where is the money going they're fining millions of dollars for.. I know they're not throwing the money in the air paying back the environment.. we know where the money's going. Another BS Legal scam
