I tried something out of curiosity. I asked it to write matlab code to create a genetic algorithm to maximize a simple fitness function. It used the built in “ga” function which I found to be cheating. I said, implement it without the builtin function and it failed. I told it where the bug was and what error message matlab gave, and it wrote code with another bug. It was impressive how close it got, but I wouldn’t have been able to just use chat GPT instead of actually learning how the ga works myself.

Programmers won't get replaced until ALL jobs get replaced by robots. We will still need humans to develop algorithms for robots to start doing physical jobs like construction, teachers, plumbers, etc. Any possible job in the world can get replace by a robot in the future but it will take a programmer to be able to develop those algorithms and to be able to implement them into a robot. If AI gets that advanced then it could just build the robots and algorithms itself to replace any job. Nobody is safe but right now I think the people who are most safe are the ones who are the ones developing AI. In the end, nobody is safe and I honestly can not think of a job in the world that a robot can't replace

Very few Universities offer computer science AI degrees but I believe they're pretty similar as a bachelors. Your masters though you can get a degree specializing in AI from a CS degree.

The fact is (as you said): When one job is going to be unnecessary due to disruptive technologies, another will also be necessary to deal with the new technologies. But as you probably know, things are getting more accessible and faster; think about simple things like automated testing with HPALM. Auto-GPT can do the same job a developer would do. But. That's nothing to be afraid of. You need to upskill and go with the time :) When I started my first job after high school, in banking, many people said that digitalization would not replace administrative work because topics are too complex. Well, 12 years later, those jobs are mostly not relevant anymore.

No ChatGPT or AI cannot replace programmers especially ones who are working on building new softwares or fixing existing systems The reason being all the available software proprietary or open source are domain based and have lots of components other than just code. There is db interactions, frontend interactions, deployment tools, integration tools, automation solutions, requirements analysis etcetc And a software engineer works simultaneously on atleast more than one of these. So yeah you can ask chatgpt a solution but how to apply the solution to solve the unique issue is based on engineer And knowing which line of code to write, where to write or which line of code to change to fix a bug will still be something that will be engineering dependent. Yes chat gpt can provide best solution but in order to get the solution you have to understand the problem and for that you still need engineers Although I agree to her point of people creating websites without being engineers don’t realise that these websites that provide these easy website creation etc is still having bunch of engineers working in the background to create these easy to use websites. And none of these sites will be anything more than a generic implementation of product design. For anything specific any specific changes or features especially in front end you still need an engineer because AI can’t suggest the accurate changes one would require in order to add a new feature to existing website.

Programmers should continue learning, however, utilize ai to help figure out how it works and how to apply it to assist you. People who know what to ask it and how to design will still be needed. A software engineer already understands this and would be able to take the generated code and apply it better than most non-developers. 5-10 years from now, those developers may still be designing and implementing code, but AI will be doing most of the actual coding and testing by then.

We still have people who work as translaters despite having computer translators that almost in real time translate all known languages. I would have predicted this job to be gone by now. If you wanna be safe from KI and robots do something only humans can do. Something that requires body contact empathy and human to human interaction, like caring for children or something. But you can still go into STEM fields even if KI will change them. If KI becomes as good as I think it will we solve so many problems at once that almost all jobs that rely on human knowledge and ingenuity will be gone, but there might be humas that supervise the maschines because we all decide that we dont want to give them to much power. So knowing STEM might prepare you to superwise these computers necause it makes you a person that is most qualified for that.

As a full stack engineer that works pretty much equally in front end and backend, she is spot on. AI is really good with knowledge based tasks as opposed to critical thinking right now. And the fact is, there’s nothing super hard about front end programming right now. Most of the difficulty is keeping up with frameworks and fighting with webpack/vite. If you think front end work is safe by AI, you’re just in denial. But don’t worry, both backend and front end will be replaced by AI l. It’s just that front end will be a few months earlier than backend devs

LOL, “nothing hard about frontend”. I can tell you only build simple WordPress sites for weddings. On the frontend side, you have to deal with four different browsers that all have their quirks, along with Safari IOS (yuck). Don’t have to deal with any of that bullshit on the backend. Backend is super easy. You have a database, you write data and creat endpoints. Nothing hard about that. It will replace you because you do dead brain work, but not any real frontend job. Maybe you should invest in a farm.
