Great video. Your points were well explained. I guess this might explain why the old CG Citrus Red soap was so often recommended for strip washes. It was not pH balanced and had no gloss enhancers.

Soooo many variables. Great explanations! I just learned a ton - awesome to hear "and this is why..." So many of the other channels are just "this is how it is..." I need to know why and I'm betting most viewers do too!! This was one of the most informative detailing posts that I have watched - and I've watched 100's. I salute you sir.

I appreciate the constructive criticism! What drove me to make the video is I had a lot of people ask me why I wasn't using something like Dawn as a strip wash to prep for new reviews in an attempt to preserve the clearcoat thickness, rather than going full blown with an abrasive finishing polish + IPA wipedown each time. And now that Clean Slate and Adam's Strip Wash have been out I receive the same questions regarding these. So my test was a quick way to show the results of why I do prefer to go abrasive to ensure that full removal before I start working with new LSP's. Your point that the short term nature of my testing does not paint a full picture of the performance of these types of soaps is well received, I will need to perform mid to long term testing in order to provide a more balanced review. However, I will note that Adam's did make the mistake of not specifically including the term "old waxes/sealants" on their bottle. I was going to hammer them for it in the test I did against Fuzion Spray Wax and High Speed Wax (which were certainly resistant even at undiluted Strip Wash strength), but I quickly used up the sample that The Guz sent over to me for testing and it wasn't until a few weeks ago that I had purchased a full 16oz bottle for further testing. Best Regards!

You caused quite some commotion on a FB group I attend... I did admit dish washing soap has a hard time to strip freshly and properly applied sealants and waxes, but how about cheap ass glazes and improperly applied products by, for instance, second hand car dealerships to make some quick and dirty extra cash... I know it can strip fillers, I saw it with my own eyes on the second hand car I bought earlier this year. It looked immaculate until I washed it with dishwashing soap to prep it for a clay, polish and wax/seal treatment.

The pH of distilled water doesn't measurably change with temperature in the range of 70-140F. To verify this use a pH test strip, not a meter. Electrode meters won't work becasue there aren't enough free ions in distilled water. However, a container of distilled water left open to the atmosphere will achieve equilibrium with CO2 at a pH very slightly lower than 7.0 . If the temperture of that water is raised, gases will be driven out of solution and the pH will return to 7.0. Laundry detergents work better to clean clothing at higher temperatures because fats and waxes melt at higher temperatures and more easily form an emulsion when in the presense of a surfectant. That helps remove fabric softeners (waxes) and sebum (waxy oil from skin) which lets the detergent and water get down into the fibers of clothing to suspend and rinse off dirt. Not that laundry detergent directions don't assume waching a flat hard surface, but cloth, (which has a total surface area much higher that its flat surface area), with a high level of agitation and cloths rubbing against each other. If you want to make distilled water (water) that has been exposed to CO2 more acidic, add white vinegar. 1 tsp/gallon will make bottled distilled water that has been opened several times and recapped slightly acidic.

Great explanation, confirmed what I thought - I'm really curious are the newer graphine coatings bs or car they actually laat 5-10 years of preped/clayed properly? I can attest jet seal last for roughly 3 years on 3 separate cars but they were clayed and buffed with v38 + glaze and machine application of jet seal. The hydrophobic quality for sure degraded over time, though on one I used the v7 spray maybe 2x a week and it was still pretty solid. I don't know anything is going to last a PA winter for more than a year or 2 without needed re-upped. Though they didn't really need re-clayed or re polished - the one was a black toyota sequoia and it still looked better than factory new paint after a quick wash for a good 3 years

After reading all the labels on my car wash soaps, and some online stuff, such as Meguiars, Zipwax, and Armor-all, I didn't see any mention of temperature, just "add (a capful) to a gallon of water." But many videos suggested warm or HOT water. When I interned at a soap company in college, we always let a test panel cure for up to 48 Hrs, before putting it in the salt or scrub tester.

Excellent video, as usual. You are exactly correct, in that Dawn will strip old waxes and sealants. I use it all the time, especially after initial evaluation of a customers car. If the wax or sealant has been applied within the last 90 days, I use CG Citrus Wash (mixed with Dawn concentrate) in hot water, followed by a distilled water/91% alcohol spray and wipe. That does the trick the vast majority of the time.

It will acuatly eat through clear. Dont use it at all. Any amount left on after wash will do that. I seen a few times. Soap that gets left over after washing it off in tight areas or the mirrors will eventually leave and run down the side of exterior. Leaving permanent water mark thats eating into the clear. Light colored car you probably wont even notice but black you see everything. You would need to wet sand to fix issue.

pH does increase with temperature, but it's so small you could ignore it. The "p" in pH means it's a logarithmic (base 10) function, so a change of 1 means a 10-times change. You can also measure pOH meaning the alkalinity, instead of acid.

You are wrong in saying that merely heating water makes it more acidic, meaning an excess of hydrogen ions to hydroxide ions. Yes, the pH value of a solution is indeed directly dependent on the temperature of the solution and a pH value measured at a higher temperature will be lower, but the ratio of hydrogen ions to hydroxide ions with pure water hasn't changed--it remains neutral. What changes is the neutral point on the pH scale. A pH value without a temperature is incoherent and measuring pH at one temperature and then measuring again at a different temperature, the two values are not comparable. It's like measuring the weight of an object at different altitudes and concluding that just because it's slightly heavier at sea level than at 5 miles up that it has therefore gained mass. No.

Just because it says "will remove old waxes & sealants" on the label doesn't necessarily mean waxes & sealants that had been applied a long time ago. To me, the word "old" could just mean "the waxes & sealants I want to remove", or "the previous waxes & sealants".
@scottbley9740
@scottbley9740 6 жыл бұрын
Greg Sullivan very interesting..i will agree with you but why use the word OLD in the first place?..why not just say removes wax?..key words are very popular in auto detailing products because many products are filled with hype so manufacturers will give themselves lots of wiggle room:)..i have seen it for years in the industry i love:)
@gregsullivan7408
@gregsullivan7408 6 жыл бұрын
Scott Bley They may just use the word "old" to emphasise that it's to remove stuff we WANT to remove. Then again, it may mean exactly what you think. I'll contact a manufacturer and ask them - can't hurt. :)
@scottbley9740
@scottbley9740 6 жыл бұрын
Greg Sullivan why ask the manufacturer? that could be a slippery slope:)..just apply your favorite sealant and wait 24 hours and then use your strip wash and see what happens. .you could be very surprised and much better proof then calling the manufacturer. .don't you think?
@gregsullivan7408
@gregsullivan7408 6 жыл бұрын
Scott Bley it doesn't hurt to know exactly what the manufacturer means on their labels. If the product doesn't behave like the label says, then we can tell them, and then they can either change the label, or improve the product.

Greg Sullivan can you ask meguiars to change the claim that their ultimate fast finish will last 100 car washes because that's not happening for me in the real world. i doubt they will change any labeling for me:(

Well.. Water has pH 7.0 at 25 degree Celsius. This is a neutral water. If you heat the water to 100 degree Celsius, the pH is 6,14. But! The water is Still Neutral! Why? Because the pH changes according to the temperature, BUT, it's still neutral because you do NOT change the proportions of hydroxide and hydrogen ions! And if pOH = pH, then it's neutral. So, i'm sorry, the water do NOT get acidic when getting hotter. As you say, it's important to know the pH scale and how it works! So in short: Water are 100 degree C and has pH 7.0. That means it's alkaline. And if the water is 0 degree C and has pH 7.0. It's acidic. So, please, before you speak - learn how the pH scale works and what it means, so you actually know what you are talking about!

What's with the passive-aggressive, poorly concealed attempts at discrediting WaxMode on account of his age? I don't know how old he is and I'm pretty sure you don't either. And it's not even a relevant. Yet you hammer on "young man" throughout your video, and even refer to him quite belittling as "the boy" a couple of times. Poor form. This is not the Scott from Dallas that I've come to know and love.

he is a young man and i have talked to him before..i actually said he has a great channel and should be supported..but his claim of saying dawn will not remove wax is wrong..i wasn't belittling him at all and i enjoy his channel but many people sent his link to me and said i was wrong for saying dawn soap will remove wax so i addressed it in this video..sorry you are being over sensitive in the moment Lars but i think WaxMode has a great channel and your making this bigger than it is:)

ok now if you are a professional detailer and being mobile even more so you would be using RO water, On top of that dawn is not something a professional would ever use. also your PH is not even worth talking about with water but what you lix it with potentially, but no never water. its will be neutral no matter what. I have been detailing high end cars for a few years now and learned all i know from a man who use to formulate and manufacture detailing products. I know I'm good ;)
