Bach merged the french (stilus subtilis, diminuitivus, stile brisé etc.) and the italian (stilus cantabile, stilus symphonicus etc.) branches of 'baroque' music to the very german branch (galanter Stil) of pre-classical music which enlightened his successors (Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven) indirectly to change the main genres of instrumental music, by deliberate neglection of the contemporary "mode". His Sons procured the compositions for us, their talent gave the actual glimpse of father Bachs prowess. And he didn't found it necessary at all to waste his time with the opera - a genre, that sparked only one compositeurs inspiration: Richard Strauß.

Well, Will, let's see you play it! According to CPE Bach who gave information for JS's obituary, claimed JS was a strong violin player right up to the end and he played some or all of the solo partitias and sonatas daily. IHope I typed that all correctly because I cannot see the screen!

That makes total sense to me.I always wondered whether Bach could play the violin or the cello at a very high level. He wrote the most virtuosic music for strings of that era,despite being a keyboard player primarily.Really astounding.

A small error: Bach did not use Equal Temperament - not least because it hadn't been invented yet. The Well-Tempered Clavier was written to demonstrate _Wohl_ Temperament, one of many attempts to find a compromise between perfect tuning that would only remain perfect in one key, and imperfections in tuning which would allow movement between keys.

A system whereby the frequency of each note is 2*1^(1/12) of the preceeding note is hard to calculate by hand, and harder to implement in instrument design. And I didn't say historical temperaments had no worthwhile character. The point is there were adopted not _just_ because of their character, but because the mathematics and engineering of the time made them inevitable. Many iconic and aspects of sound production and recording are the result of techological inadequacy or ideosyncracy. Tape saturation, vacuum tube distortion, vinyl pops, wow and flutter, etc.

Equal temperament did exist in Bach's time. In fact, it had already been championed by such theoreticians as Vincenzo Galilei (Galileo's father) and Christian Huygens. It just wasn't very popular, probably because it isn't easy to tune well ab initio.
