Yeah, two years ago I was preparing for engineering but I just switched to automotive class since I realize I want to do some hands on first. And last quarter my automotive class teacher once said that in the class that you can’t use extension on torque wrench because it “twists” and I said no you can and most of my classmates are laughing at me, the called me the “Wikipedia and google guy”, little do they know I learned all that in the school. And I offered the class to go to the shop with me to test it out but no one would bother see my demonstration. This is an awesome video, I can show this to my classmates, but I doubt they will actually trust it since this is “youtube”. Well, sometimes you just can’t talk to people who aren’t even close to your level of education…

I was thinking of getting a torque wrench with higher capacity, but budget is tight :( So I Googled up a little bit to see If there's a workaround to increase torque wrench capacity, and I found out that I could use an extension. Thanks for the video. This is a question I have had and couldn't really find much on. One twist on this test that you could answer for me...in addition to the 3" extension, add an adapter if you can. I was using my 1/4" torque wrench with a 3/8" adapter along with a 3" extension. The torque spec was 100 inch pounds on a fairly large hex head bolt, which is why I was using the above setup. The result I got was that I could not get my torque wrench to click and I way overtightened the bolt.
@dtrrtd774
@dtrrtd774 7 жыл бұрын
Perhaps you missed the click, because the small torque values are not going to be a very perceptible click, it'll be more felt than heard. You probably just went past the click and just kept on pushing way past the setting. Assuming your torque wrench isn't defective.
@gjw45
@gjw45 7 жыл бұрын
+BrewCityRider - Yes, what happened to you is very common, and is why some mechanics prefer not to use torque wrenches, and go by feel. The exception would be for things like Cylinder head bolts and other high torque items. The reason it didn't click is very simple. I'll do my best to give you a quick explanation. If you have a bolt, it's achievable torque will be different, depending on where it is being used. There are hard joints & soft joints, then there are many variations of those two. But in it's simplest form, a hard joint is metal to metal. As an example, a front or rear sprocket bolt is going to be a hard joint. A soft joint is something that has a gasket in between them, or doing up a plastic or rubber part. There are many more variables. Oil, grease, silicone and even loctite can stop you achieving your desired torque. Also, long extensions are ok to use, only in the lower to mid range of a torque wrench's application. At a certain point, the extension will start flexing (invisible to the eye) and stop the toque wrench from clicking. The machine that Shane is using here will not show that, because it only shows peak torque and it's not giving the torque wrench the feed back that it would typically receive from a fastener. Also, sockets can flex, so do not use those long extension type. Now, when I say flex, it's not as if it's twisting around and is going to snap. What it does, is it gives just a slight amount flex that stops the torque wrench from clicking. Having said that, in your case, you went to a bigger extension, so I do not think that was the case with your problem. I would be interested to know what you were doing up, and if you had oil or anything else on the threads. I'm only used to working in metric, but doing a quick "Google" conversion, your hex head bolt works out to be 10.Nm, which is a very low torque for a large hex head bolt. These things normally present themselves in special applications. But, isn't that torque setting getting into the maximum range of "1/4" ? I can tell you now, do not use "1/4" extensions at that torque range, because it will flex. (I'm talking about an extension longer than 2inches) Apart from being a motorbike mechanic myself, I spent 25 years working for one of the largest car makers in the world. My job was to check assembly line inspection toques, and adjust torque wrenches accordingly. I had to perform these tests every single day on various nuts and bolts. I remember when I first started there, I was blown away by what I learnt about tightening torque, inspection torque & peak torque. I suddenly realised how little I knew. That was 40% of my job, the other 60% was engine testing (Dyno testing) I've only just discovered this channel, and I have to say, I'm impressed with Shane and the knowledge that he is sharing.

I don't mean any disrespect when I say this, but basic static analysis doesn't jive with what you're saying about torsional deflection of an axial extension causing inaccurate torque to be applied to a fastener in a constant load situation like when using a torque wrench. Maybe there's something about how click-type torque wrenches work that I'm missing, but from a physics standpoint, the magnitude of the force at the wrench is 100% the magnitude of the force at the fastener REGARDLESS of any flex or twist of the extension or socket (again, in a static context). The real problem with using axial extensions in this situation is it increases the likelihood of you being off center of the fastener, which obviously DOES impact accuracy of the torque wrench. You don't need to be off by a lot on say a 2-ft extension to appreciably undertorque a bolt. For "overtorquing" situations like BrewCityRider experienced, the most logical explanation is either that (1) his fastener wasn't clean/dry and the torque spec was for non-lubricated install, or (2) the fastener he was using was somehow already compromised (eg, past its yield point) so it just kept deforming vs increasing preload. Not sure how he determined he overtorqued the bolt though (re-tightened? snapped?)

People sometimes wonder why I don't use a crowfoot and then trust torque readings. Of course if the wrench is long and if your handle angle is 90deg to the crowfoot extension, the result may be close because the crowfoot only adds an inch or so to the lever. There is also the mitigating factor that many torque guidelines have significant tolerance. However there is no doubt that as that crowfoot angle changes you get a sinusoidal variance in torque, as small as that factor may be. Whether it matters depends on the application. It's too bad those calibration machines aren't more widely available -- I would love to check out my wrenches.

Thanks Shane for this video. I did ask this question on your other extension video. I always was under the impression that with a long extension you lose torque due to that slight twisting of the extension. But I guess the loss is minimal. "Keep Wrenching "👍👍👍👍
@dtrrtd774
@dtrrtd774 7 жыл бұрын
Twisting only comes into play with impact wrenches, because of the short duration impulse from the wrench, rather than a continuous application of torque. That's the theory behind the torque sticks, which are basically torsion springs that start twisting at a certain level of torque, to prevent the torque from going beyond the goal.
@kyy7774
@kyy7774 6 жыл бұрын
To add to what DTR RTD said, even when an axial extension (what's being talked about in this vid) twists under load from a static/constant force, it's still going to "transmit" 100% of that force to the fastener. Any other outcome in this scenario would defy physics. The torque required to twist that extension doesn't just disappear in the extension: there are equal and opposite forces on each end of that extension (fastener and torque wrench) that's causing it to twist. Having said this, the myth that you need to turn a wrench (including torque wrenches) with more torque if using an axial extension in order to apply some particular (lesser) torque to a fastener is also patently false for the same reason. Again, all only applicable in the context of static/constant forces. The impact forces delivered by impact tools complicates things.

Shane, great video. I am constantly seeing misinformation about torque when using extensions. It's refreshing to see not only correct information, but backed up with testing. Guys, number one, always use the correct drive size of extensions based upon your torque. Here are the ANZI square drives limits: 1/4" drive = max 300 in.lbs., 3/8" drive = max 100 ft.lbs. 1/2" drive = max 300 ft.lbs., 1" drive = max 2000 ft.lbs. Never exceed these limits, especially when using drive adapters. Do extension flex? Sure they do...but they STOP flexing at a certain point, then your have one to one torque. If they did not stop flexing, you could not use them, right? Now this ONLY applies to hand operated torque wrenches. Air or electric impact wrenches used with torque sticks are a whole other thing. Keep up the good work, Gary, Snap-on Tools Torque Trainer.

I use to always add an extra 1ft-lb when I had to use a long extension. But now it makes sense there would be minimal loss because the weight of the extension is not great enough to increase the rotational resistance, as long as the angle is supported.

Thank you for a great video. Recently I tried tightening an axle nut to 215ft/lbs. The torque wrench was good to 250 ft/lbs. I am not a strong person by any means and I physically could not tighten enough where the wrench would click So I added a pipe over the wrench to give me some more leverage and did the trick. But now I am thinking whether or not that was a good thing to do. Isn't the torque settings predicated on the actual length of the wrench itself and the force applied where the handle is?

The wrench has a mechanism inside the wrench that limits torque that acts on a pivot on the wrench as long as the pipe didn't bridge that pivot and was on the section your hand would be on to apply the force the value will be correct. Otherwise if you placed your hand anywhere but a specific spot the torque would be out. Hope my explanation made sense. Not all torque wrenches are the same but this would be true for just about all I believe as they operate on similar principles.
@oscarfong6307
@oscarfong6307 2 жыл бұрын
Since torque equals force x distance, you should get the same results. When you added the pipe for leverage, you are now applying less force on the end of the pipe, but the distance is greater. I believe the results should be similar assuming the angle is still 90 degrees to the nut.

Can you do parallel extension please? Example - C-wrench needed to for motorcycle head bearing nut. Those need to be "torque" to specific value and usually you use C-wrench with 1/2 inch square hole to mate with 1/2 inch torque wrench. The square hole is offset from the centre of the nut. Some say that if you mate C-wrench and torque wrench at 90 degree then there is no need for further torque adjustment/calculation?

I came here just for universal adapters on torque wrenches. In my mind as long as you are not binding the universal joint every other angle should not affect the torque transfer (or at least be less that 1/2 pound). This of course means a much smaller degree of movement, which is all I need in my project. I was glad to see him use the universal towards the end (the off-camera guy did deserve that high-five for bring it up) but I feel it was not well tested out. There seemed to be way too much angle and most likely the joint was binding. If that was a joint like a CV joint, the drastic angle would not matter as much since it would not bind. I would have like to see torque test at a very slight angle to a slightly more angle and finally to the max where he had it. I still do not have my answer...back to the internet abyss. Thanks for the good video on extensions, though.

Sometimes with long straight extensions, the angle ends up being not quite 90 degrees because it pivots a little, especially if you're trying to fit into a tight spot. That doesn't affect the torque?

Would there be a more perceptible difference at higher torques, say 100Nm+? My mind would say no, maybe you could test it?
@Willgtl
@Willgtl 5 жыл бұрын
As long as you maintain a right angle, it doesn't matter if it's 5 inches or 5 meters. 100Nm is 100Nm. At higher torque you may be prone to twisting extensions, but that doesn't affect a torque reading. If that happens, the wrench just wont click or the dial will drop (If using an analog torque wrench).

But what about when more torque is applied? 30lbs isn't enough to flex any extension. What about 75ft lbs? Or over 100ft lbs? I'd imagine there would be some torsional flex that would change the torque reading. I've always wondered about this when using extensions on lugnuts and stuff that require more torque. Really wish they did these tests with a lot higher settings.

Impacting torque should be affected by adapters and extensions but I don't know to what extent. Torque wrenches are a steady application of torque so it shouldn't but an impact should be a different story.
@t.t.6398
@t.t.6398 7 жыл бұрын
Would the amount of torque being applied matter as to the results? In the test you used 35lb ft of torque and the results speak for themselves. My question is what happens when you really start cranking on it to say 100 or 150lb ft of torque? At some point you will start to get twist in those extensions and I'd love to know at what point that is.
@Mamushka68
@Mamushka68 5 жыл бұрын
There would be no difference at 10, 100 or 10,000 pounds (as long as nothing broke). Yes the extension will twist like a torsion spring but once the spring has stabilized (no motion) the torque out will be the same as the torque in. But if you run a impact wrench with extensions and "bounce" the spring you will lose torque. This is how those torque sticks for tightening lug nuts with a impact work. They are just torsion springs with different spring rates. The lower toque ones are softer springs and the higher torque ones have higher spring rates. If you used them with a torque wrench set to 100 ft-lbs. you would twist the lower ones more than the higher ones but your output torque would be the same at 100 ft-lbs. for all of them.
@DannyGruesome

not at all, thats what torque sticks are for. using an impact wrench will spring back when used with extensions, which absorb the impact and cause less force to be delivered to the fastener

Yes, change in length can apply the same torque. HOWEVER, just remember that the amount of angle (of twist) required does change with length. The longer the extensions the more angle of twist that will need to be applied to achieve the same torque value required. Ex: look at how much his back hand moves at 1:05 vs 1:36

1. A torque wrench is accurate within a certain tolerance plus or minus some certain percentage 2. A torque wrench is most accurate in the middle of its range 3. That was one of how many torque applications? There are bound to be high and low torques 4. It was about 1.5 lb.ft. off which is approximately off by 4% which is acceptable especially with that many extensions. I'm certain you made a much better and more scientific video.

Physics demands that extensions make a difference, but normal extensions are so light that the difference is negligible. You could demonstrate it with an extension that's, e.g., 1 foot long and 6 feet in diameter. That would weigh almost 14,000 pounds (assuming it's solid steel) and wouldn't even be budged by applying 35 ft. lbs. of torque to one end of it. Your torque wrench would click but your torque meter on the other end of the massive extension would still be reading zero.
