The reason its not backwards compatible (and i dont mind actually) is because it lacks the physical hardware of the gameboy color, which the gameboy advnace and advance SP had, it would cost more to implement it and there simply isnt much space in the DS... if you are curious, the GBA and DS CPU's are both located underneath the DS card slot. Nintendo technically could have been able to let the DS emulate those games but then again, the cost would increase and the games would be a bit more unstable

a 3ds can natively run gba games, it has similar architecture to a ds (even having ds mode specifically for backwards compatibility), so it can run gameboy games like how a ds can, but this is only ever used in ambassador games or in homebrew

It’s like they figured, remember when we made China’s iQue have downloadable games on their portable N64 console, well when we put the eShop on the DS and Wii, it worked on those consoles as well, to lets make it work even on the Switch, cause now all of our consoles can fit into 1 with thanks to the eShop, I mean, port those roms into the eShop, give the people notices that one day more games will be downloadable and surprise them in the end since this is proving to work for almost everything we’ve ever created.

Actully no, both ARM CPUs are used in DS games, so any DS compatinle hardware teoreticly could run GBA games. GB needs z80 CPU it was used as co processor in GBA but nintendo find way to remove it while keeping compatibility

Extended answer: GBA architecture and up changed its operating voltage so unless it has that physical switch in the cart slot like the GBA & SP to let it know the cart is different it will send the wrong power (and processor, architecture... yadda yadda)

The reason this doesn’t work is that the gba has a different form of cartridge reader, The GBA had both next to each other allowing it to play older Gameboy games you could theoretically try and swap them but idk if that would even work

No, if they use the same slot but in the GBA the processor itself internally has the GBC processor, which allows backward compatibility With the Game Boy Micro and Nintendo DS, that processor was removed from the console, making it incompatible with GB games.

@@Sakamoto196 not even close. the GBA's arm7 and the sm83 of the GB/GBC are to totally different things, not only in architecture, but also size. there is no possible way that the sm83 core could fit in the arm7, and even if it **could**, the pinouts would have to match up in order for GB games to work properly. the DS's GBA hardware doesn't have the right hardware necessary to actually play GB/GBC games. end of discussion. it's not possible unless you were to manufacture an entirely new board(and bios) to bring the necessary support. the only thing that *is* available from the GB/GBC, is the audio that the sm83 provided, but it's seperate from the sm83 on the DS as far as I'm aware.

GBA uses same connector as original Game Boy, however the pinout and voltage levels are different. The GBA uses a switch to boot into GBC mode for backwards compatibility, the DS doesn't use it as it lacks GBC mode. That switch is activated by cartridge for Game Boy and its Color variant. You can attach GBA games, or DS accessories to secondary slot, located near bottom screen.

Something like a Switch cartridge or SD card is the same, it's just a way smaller form factor. Unless there's some weird custom tech like a tilt sensor [Kirby Tilt & Tumble] or a sunlight sensor [Boktai], pretty much all cartridges for a system are fundamentally the same at the hardware level.

Well you can run Gameboy games from a GBA cartridge actually--You can run a gameboy emulator on the "Everdrive GBA" flash cart then plug it into your DS. But at that point, you might as well run a Gameboy emulator with a Nintendo DS flash cart.

The DS is looking for a ROM header in the GBA that the GB doesn’t have, so it thinks the GB is a counterfeit because it’s not programmed to recognize those. The not fitting part is just so consumers don’t try it, but if you do get it in, the system has a way around that

@@KittyCatKayden Flash cartridge used their own emulator. It's basically how Nintendo got NES games to run on GBA with the NES Classic Series. They used PocketNES emulator and just flash an NES rom on it. If your DS flash cartridge work with GB and GBC roms then it's likely there's a built-in GBC emulator in there. I know the EZ Flash IV cart for GBA came with PocketNES and DrSMS emulators built-in so you could just load up NES and SMS roms and they'll work on GBA and GBM flawlessly.

I would shove the games in as hard as I could and then slightly wiggle them a little loose and BAM my games would play. This unfortunately didn’t work on the lite model. Doesn’t that have to do with the DS does not having the software to understand the different memory bank controllers or MBCs. GBA didn’t use MBCs anymore like the gbc carts but had additional hardware to detect them so it could play them but was omitted from the final gba micros. I vaguely remember somebody modding a micro gba to get it to play gbc carts and was successful in getting it to identify the cartridge but unsuccessful in reading the games and then the Goomba emulator came out, I guess the person gave up. I wonder if somebody will ever come up with a hardware or software mod that would allow the system to identify the gbc cartridges for DS. What Id really like is somebody getting a custom Built motherboard and shell for 3DS/2DS XL to have a Gameboy cart port that reads both gbas and gbcs and utilize a link port to play multiplayer.

Yeah I had to find out the hard way. I carved chucks out of the sides of my Pokemon Blue cartridge to make it fit because I wanted to see if it would work. I never even thought to just take out the chip because I was young and stupid. Now I have a Pokémon Blue with chunks of plastic missing. Good thing you chose to cut up a GBA game nobody would give a shit about lol No idea why they made it incompatible with Gameboy. The very fact that GBA has those wedges cut out of the sides makes me think that they were thinking really far ahead when they made GBA. Like they knew they were going to create a system in the future that would play GBA. But they wouldn't want it to play Gameboy so they made them shaped differently. A lot of thought went into denying backwards compatibility.

これ、PC-AT互換機で言えば、そのマザボに非対応のメモリボードを無理やり差し込むのと同じ。 当然ながらBIOSで認識されないし、最悪は起動時にブルースクリーンで落ちる。
