The diploma issue always cracks me up when I see it brought up in a comment section. You order one, print the info on it, and sign it. No college has ever asked for it. I have never needed to scan it to send it or something. It's all about the transcripts and SAT scores.

i am feeling so many mixed emotions listening to you, i am so glad and happy i understand this process because your sharing it! and will do more research for my state of Georgia. But then I feel so mad at my mom ! I was homeschooled my entire life and never was any record kept for me. Once I got to highschool age she just sent me to GED classes smh that didnt help me get my diploma. I could have literally written my own transcripts and kept a long for myself as a teen so i could go to college. sitting here at 27 realizing this is so maddening. But I am happy to know this for my son's sake, his Homeschooling will be logged and recorded properly so that a mistake like what happened to me will not be apart of his story.

Currently going through something similar. Can’t get my GED due to lack of Accommodations for my mental health/ learning disability issues, having no resources to help, and having no quiet place to study I had to give up. I’m currently trying to find a job and I’m so scared rn. 😅

Hi Hun! I am a Georgia Homeschooling parent. My daughter got her homeschool high school diploma, we had a whole graduation ceremony and everything. She graduated around the covid era. The nationwide tests were not being shipped out for home school students or public-school student. We opted to take the GED test as a substitute graduation test. We were able to get her into the university without hesitation. She even got a 500-dollar scholarship from passing the GED test the first try. She just graduated this May with a perfect GPA of 4.0 with her associate's degree and is in her junior year working on her bachelor's degree while maintaining her 4.0. I could go on and on, but I wont. This is to let you know that you have accomplished something great, and you definitely can become a doctor or anything you want with your GED. Please enroll yourself into college pronto if that is what you want. You are young and as a homeschool parent we are all trying to figure this out as we go. I have graduated my second homeschool student now and we are getting her ready for college as well. Your GED is an accomplishment as well. You got this!

There are also programs such as NARSH - North Atlantic Regional High School - located in main that for a fee ( not much) gives you both a Diploma and transcript based on the work completed. Again the homeschool parent . I find them very flexible and work great with us homeschooling parents. It accredited by the Middle State Colleges and other accrediting agencies. & is recognized as a private school in the State of Maine. In case any one else would like this option. They do not supply curriculum you can choose or create your own, they don't grade, you do. You decide your homeschool they just verify that the amount of work done is equivalent to the credits suggested. This could be as simple as showing all tests taken.

The only caveat to this is that some jobs do background checks and the companies they hire for those background checks often don't recognize unaccredited diplomas. My husband has seen where good applicants get turned down for jobs because the background checks come back with unaccredited diploma's. Now I am scrambling to get my high schooler into an accredited online high school and none of them will accept his home school transcript without having it signed off by a licensed teacher. It's been really frustrating.

My kiddos are not near high school age, but keeping this video saved for down the road. Miss Becky for the win as always when it comes to homeschool information and helping ease our minds! (I still have my cap and gown as well, lol). Oh, and I've been out of high school for almost 20 years and not once (besides applying for college) did I need to show my high school diploma or transcripts. I remember carrying mine around when applying for jobs, I remember one employer told me "We'll just take your word on it". Not sure if that was good or bad sign.

I put my child back in school. She did 8th, 9th home. But she wanted to go back. I put her back in but the put her in 9th. Now she bored. She's making straight A's and knowing Leap scores out the park. But she had to start over. It's tough finding a good school close to home in NEW ORLEANS. I want to pull her back out because homeschool was so much better. The curriculum was much more challenging. I'm so glad you made this video because I thought I really messed up homeschooling then putting her back in public. I thought she wouldn't get into college or no public school credits meant I screwed up.
@aplacetonest Жыл бұрын
No, you're doing ok. Just check with your state's board of education to find out what graduation requirements are as far as credits and then you can start outlining what your daughter's remaining classes should be.

Great information! Can you also do a video on transcripts? That’s what I’m most concerned about! And if your student completes a class (IEW writing for example) and it’s not an accredited class, can we still put it on the transcript for credits to count as class credits? That’s where I’m lost - would love a video! Thanks!!
@heatherpolk79753 жыл бұрын
Yes you can. Most homeschool curriculum isn't accredited , doesn't make it any less valuable.
@aplacetonest3 жыл бұрын
Check out this video to see if it helps: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y5PGnIFrmNeDg8U Also, Heather answered you correctly. Even if your child isn't taking a course through an accredited school, you can still count it. The difference is, if your child takes 100% of their classes through an accredited school then they will receive an official diploma. Otherwise, you will be the one to issue them their diploma.
@potter17963 жыл бұрын
Excellent - thank you so much! That’s such a relief! I saw an online school that will accredited any courses your child takes that aren’t already accredited, but the cost was about $1500!! That seemed like such a rip off and unnecessary, but it started to make me panic. Thank you!!

You're the teacher. You decided that they got the credits. I know it sounds a bit crazy, like, "Is this allowed?" Yes. I was looking at my transcript recently and saw credits for Bible and music. I did Bible reading, and we went to church, so Mom put that in. She taught me piano, and I was in our church choir. She used that.

How do you feel about GED vs home issued diploma? My husband was homeschooled and took his GED but, don’t know what route I’m going to go with our homeschool.
@aplacetonest3 жыл бұрын
That's hard to say because I'm sure they're both fine but personally, I prefer a home-issued diploma. I think the only reason for that is because there's a "stigma" attached to the GED that, whether it's true or not, leads people to believe that you didn't complete high school. That's just my two cents. :)
@christinasetzer28802 жыл бұрын
Personal experience. I was homeschooled, at 16 my mom sent me to the college to get my GED. It took me way to long to get my GED because I would lie about going and leave early and ran around with new "friends" I met at the college. If you are doing all this work homeschooling, just go all the way through and finish and issue the diploma. I'm fighting with my mom now about my 15 year old sister. She wants to send her for her GED at 18 because she doesn't want to do a transcript. I told her I'll do it for her. Issue her the diploma!! But not all experiences are the same but from mine, I will be homeschooling mine until the end and issuing their diploma and transcript

When did you start filling in the transcript...high school or middle school? Also when should they take the ACT? @aplacetonest3 жыл бұрын
@@sarahfrancine3564 I started filling in her transcript at the end of middle school since we counted 8th grade Earth Science towards one of her high school science credits. As for the ACT, she had to take it as a sophomore in order to have an ACT score on file and be able to enroll in dual credit classes as a junior. Yes, I have a list of the state's high school graduation requirements on-hand so I could plan her classes and fill them in on her transcript once she completed them. I hope that helps!

I understand that completely. I used to worry about the same thing but quickly realized that a school-issued diploma doesn't mean more than a homeschool-issued one as long as your child meets graduation requirements and does well on any pre-college exams like the ACT or SAT. That being said, every family has to choose for themselves what the right course is. :)

How do I get a transcript?
@bookworm4174Ай бұрын
Just google what one looks like and type one on a word processor like Word, Google Docs, or Pages. You can probably even download a free template. Research what credits your state requires a student to have and make sure they do that content. For example, our state required language, so we got Rosetta Stone Spanish to do at home.

Well, every state has different graduation requirements but if you only need a total of 22 to graduate, I would think you could complete that at home. I don't know if you're still registered with the local public school system but if you are, they usually require you to notify them that you're going to be homeschooling. I would call the school you used to attend, and your local board of education, and ask them what you need to do to start homeschooling.
