Definitely agreed with you, that's why I got a W124 too. No point driving a stiffly sprung car since poor road condition is everywhere in where I live. The soft ride of W124 should iron out most of the road imperfection, so I can enjoy the journey from A to B in comfort.

The most liberating feeling in the world is that wonderous moment when you realise as a motorist, that you just don't have to spend large amounts of money on a car to achieve pure enjoyment. The 'true' difference in driving a Datsun 510 (1600) or a Mazda RX3 versus a Lamborghini or Ferrari on your favourite backroad just isn't the vast chasm many may think. Great cars are great cars and they come in many different forms.

The old "squarish" Mercedes S class and S coupe are infinitely more classy than the current brash models. Since the A/CLA they truly lost their reputation, it's become a chavs' brand.

@@r7coo They are also great cars of the ear, though they don't have the sense of occasion the Mercedes-Benz have. See they are hot hatches, I personally am a huge fan of lightweight and small cars. You can place them so well on the road and can actually get to enjoy most of the car. The Mercedes-Benz coupes of the era were about transcontinental journeys in great comfort and composure. They had a completely different road presence to the hot hatches and other cars on the road.

@@theodoreyoung8777 Amazing car I worked for lexus Croydon when this came out. By far the best car of it's time. Nothing at any price to could touche it. Even better then the rolls royce in most ways. Now though it is much harder for lexus to beat the other brands. They have all caught up using the korean and Chinese smart tech. Trying to convince someone lexus is better now is a lot harder. Lexus have quality of course but that's it now. Before they were better in every way then the European competition

Ive had a couple of 560 SECs, they are very similar in handling and operation as the c124. Its not all that heavy to be an S class (1750kg) and with the euro spec engine its plenty fast with a v8 soundtrack. Originality like wheels and orange indicators are a must for me, and they do fit the bill better as a classic if they're close to original. They're still pretty cheap and are a timeless pillarless design, so they are bound to keep or rise in value. Great content as always, this channel is constantly improving in quality and you are a natural host.

The wheels on the car Jay drives are not my thing, too, although they are correct for the period, that was what people put on their cars back than, just like the spoiler and the exhaust pipes. I am still not a fan. But the white indicators are correct. This is the third generation of the 124 series. (1st did not have the Sacco side covers unless it was a six cylinder, the 2nd gen did get the covers on all models, the 3rd gen, like this got the white indicators and the grill was decreased in size, the merc star moved from the top of the grill to the front of the bonnet.

@@lukemallory7832 Yep. Sacco regarded the 126, especially the SEC, as his best ever design. Although he could have any Benz he liked, he still chooses to drive a C126. My SEC is called Bruno, after its designer (I always anthropomorphise my cars).

I loved my 560SEC. Had it for over 10 years. Sold it around 11 years ago at the bottom of the market. Traded it on an AMG 55CL that I kept for 1 year.. That was a mistake. Wish I still had the 560.

i don´t understand they couldn´t be more far from eachother i had a SEC with a V8 ,i think it was the 500 but also had the c124 and they are two very diferent cars unless you use automatic and in reality you just stear ,wich is a pitty to have such great cars and not knowing how they handle one is almost alf the size from the other and the driving is completely diferent or i wouldn´t keep for a good period of time both,is the same of saying that the 190E 2,3 is the same compared to the SE ,both are sedans but a litle diferent in size, and having more than one 560 you´re lucky they are very rare with that engine ,normally the AMG version , and cheap you can buy a GT mercedes new for less money a 560 SEC can be sold by 195.000€(if you find one) as others rare mercedes like the 60´s SL that can be sold even for more than the amount i said . The ones who can be bought cheaper are if there is one with automatic transmition that normally people above 70 years old choose to use automatic ,regards

JayEmm: Great to see you featuring a C124. :-) Modern cars, including modern Benzes, leave me cold. Jellybean-shaped computers on wheels are not my thing. Over 30+ years I've owned 17 Benzes - at least one example of every S-Klasse from 1955 220a (W180) to 1993 S 320 (W140); my main driver of the past seven years is an '83 C126 500 SEC. Perhaps the most special was my 1964 W112 300 SE coupé, Paul Bracq's masterpiece. I've also owned a W124 (300 E) and two W201s (180 E and 190 E). My first Benz was a W108 280 SE that I acquired when it was 11 years old; it was my main driver for 22 years until I retired it at 512K miles. The only significant mechanical repairs it required were a head gasket replacement and a fuel pump. Perhaps I’ve been unusually fortunate, but when I total up all my M-B expenditures and selling prices, the marque has actually *paid me* to own it.

i have the opinion that the first car was a real mercedes the second model doesn´t look like a S or E-class mercdes, it was made in brazil the front part looks like a miniture of a E-class or late 90´s C-class and the back just like the E-class, they have powerfull engines and those are well built but compared to older models looks like a weak car ,from Brazil only cachaça is good

Great video Jay! I drive a 1978 Mercedes 280ce Coupe which I suppose is referred to as a C123 in Mercedes parlance. Living in Los Angeles helps but I do believe as you do that these are cars you can enjoy every day. It never ceases to amaze me how modern these cars feel and perform.

Being the proud owner of a Zinnobar Red E28 at 25, I have to say you were spot on with the whole bit about owning a classic car. The reactions I get when people see the old girl on the road, to them it either evokes a feeling of "Oh that's really cool" or "I remember when so and so had one of these". I also love just how much more of an achievement it feels to drive it, compared to a friend's modern E53 AMG. In the E53, I feel like I'm only along for the ride and I'm not really in full control, whereas in the E28 I feel it's only because of me that I've done what I've done. Alas I'd love to drive the old girl everywhere but I live just outside of the expanded ULEZ zone in London, so I'll have to wait for another 4 years before she becomes a historic vehicle, in the meantime I have a ULEZ compliant crapbox that can deal with that nonsense so it's all well and good.

My daily driver is a 1967 Volvo Amazon. Love it. Great looks, zero rust, totally reliable, no computer, easy to repair, manual shift (plus overdrive) and inexpensive to run. It was the car that anticipated modern BMW's (great performance in a family car) and still corners, brakes and accelerates like a modern vehicle. Moreover, prople of all ages and backgrounds gather anywhere I stop to tell me how much they love it. Tough to find a good model but they are out there.

Having driven Amazons for 15 years I can mostly concur. They keep up, at least with 1 litre Euro boxes, but I would say the handling is of its time. As soon as I moved to my present W123 I became a calm driver, whereas the Amo made me hot-headed. But I miss the visceral quality of driving a 60s car.

Rust on these old Mercs can be horrendous, especially around the wheel arches. Still love these old coupes when in nice condition. They have real class.

A big part for me is the visibility equation. Modern cars with their excessively sloping and thick A-pillars, larger b-pillars, cramped and wide c-pillar, and high waistline have nowhere near the visibility for any of the occupants. This visibility should form part of the NCAP rating. And the funny thing is you don't even realize how bad modern cars have become on this front until you step back into a classic and drive one.

Strongly agree. I've been thinking of getting something newer* recently (for the sake of having A/C) - but *everything* seems hard to see out of. And a properly designed car shouldn't *need* parking-sensors, you should be able to see. *newer than my 190E which has excellent visibility.

The reason I love my classic car. Inexpensive motoring with no depreciation. Parts and insurance are cheap. Random people come up to you and talk about having owned one. People in the street wave at you. I am always let out of junctions. Passengers spend most of their time laughing, smiling, and cheering. Fellow owners always have some parts to help you out. Classic cars just sound and smell so much better.

Enjoyable video as always. I acquired a low mileage 1996 C124 last October and its one of the most comfortable & quiet cars I've driven, amazing for a 25 year old car. Hate to say it as a die hard manual transmission fan but the auto box suits the wafty character of these cars. Love the horizontal & boxy lines of both the exterior & interior too.

A lot of what you're saying resonates with me. Cars have converged in recent years. The regulations have killed the sound. The badly interpreted progress is killing the interior design with every car manufacturer trying to cram the most screens, forgetting about the importance of tactility in the process of doing so. The exteriors are unified so much that even us geeks admit we need to read the badge to find out which exact model it is that we see on the road. The engines? R4 with a turbo. Or two of them. That's about it if you're not crazy rich. When I think about (relatively) new cars that make me feel genuinely interested and are not super or hypercars... New Alfas, IONIC, M2 CS, Yaris GR, BRZ/AE86 and Mazdas and bimmers for their styling. I'm getting a 20-year old BMW next week. Gonna be my daily. Wish me luck :)

I completely understand the comfy feeling you get in an older Mercedes. I had a 1989 300e sedan for several years and absolutely loved it! It was economical, had reasonable power, had almost ever creature comfort known to man and was more comfortable than my recliner chair at home. Like an idiot I sold it to buy a VW Diesel Van to move a few hundred miles for a job. Miss the Merc very much but circumstances have changed, I'm now a widower sadly, and lost my right leg below the knee from type 2 diabetes, hence my search for an automatic car that's entertaining to drive, comfortable and of course reliable, or at least cheap to fix. I'm thinking a GT car maybe a 3rd generation Toyota Supra Turbo, or a Datsun 280zx, possibly even a Porsche 924s/944 all of which came with optional auto transmissions. I'd love to throw the Jaguar XK8/XKR on the list, even a Porsche 928 but I fear the upkeep, the insurance and angry people with keys. Looking forward to see what lands in your drive, cheers from Canada!

Be careful with fuel now according to the government E10 non compatible car list all Rover fuel systems are apparently only suitable for E5 petrol, unless you have a diesel.

These are pretty much the reason I only drive 'old' cars. Love my Saab 900 Classic 2.1i, Saab 900ng Convertible 2.3i and Volkswagen Corrado VR6. But even the daily runabout is older, a Saab 9-5 Estate 2.3t. So yea, I do like the older cars. 😄

9 out of 10 times you get it spot on in my opinion. I think we reached peak car somewhere around 2008-2010. Love your programming.

Interesting, 08-10 would be roughly my pick for when cars were least good. Germany reliability died about 10 years earlier, safety was making cars fat (and safe which is good, but still fat) and mechanical bits hadn't really improved to a level where we saw drastic changes in handling. 90s win for me - we had the great hot hatches and supercars like the Diablo and F1. Then after about 2011 we really started to get modern tech, proper diffs and adjustable suspension made the fat cars handle ok again and so on. There are exceptions, great cars from 08-10 but pre-2003 and 2012-on I can think of far more groundbreaking cars (pro rata) than between those periods.

I agree I think 2008-2010 designed cars were the last of peak cars. I drive a 2013 SEAT Ibiza FR which was a update to the 2008 Ibiza. Its possibly one of the last FR models strictly using the sporty design details including a actual twin tip exhaust unlike the new Ibiza FR which is fakery sport design with fake pretend twin exhausts. It also doesn't have all this annoying nanny state safety gear fitted.

This was the golden age of Mercedes. I had a neighbor that had one of these and a BMW 635CSi at the same time, damn nice driveway. One of my roommates in college had a 300E and I drove that quite a bit. My father had a 500E and it's still one of my favorite cars to this day, I definitely plan to get one sometime soon in the future.

I have a few 80's German cars, but my favorite has to be the w126. It blows me away every time I drive it. Just how smooth it is, the quality of the sound system (being 30 years old) and just how nicely it goes down the road. It is one of the most satisfying cars I've ever driven, and thus I drive it a ton. Probably 15k miles a year in addition to my daily (L322).

I had a W126 LWB in late 90s. There isn't a classic car of that era which rides and feels like that did. A truly fantastic car from when they felt like they were built out of girders and granite.

Awesome expression of what is my impression too. As a special, affordable classic car I can recommend a mercedes C140. I am driving a 600SEC and it's an event every time you crank these 12 Zylinders. Although if you look for attention I can tell driving my R129 Sl280 is turning more heads though! Keep on doing great content your style!

@@bogdanbosoi1483 On a planet where you start to compare it to the garage and financial capability of JayEmm. If you deal with Ferrari, Lamborghini and other exotic stuff an c140 V12 is affordable. If you compare it to a mk 2 golf GTI for example it is not and you are right.

I think the bit about knowing what you want from it and how you want to drive it is really important. Fun story: my normal daily is currently in the bodyshop getting 12 years of living on country highways wiped off the front of it and a general spruce up (door seals, tidy the rims, etc), so for the last few weeks I've been dailying my 40 year old Alfetta GTV. While the Merc may make you content to waft along in no hurry, I find that the Alfetta makes me a more aggressive driver than I am in the daily. There's a few reasons for that, 1) the Alfa's red and Italian so it feels in character, 2) it's not actually very fast, so every kph is precious, and 3) it really rewards pushing on a bit (which, joyfully, is still done at sane speeds). It's also been a reminder that all the things that make that car fun and I love about it, are also the things that make it a /screaming pain in the arse/. It's a fun, interactive, immediate, and visceral drive which is a two-way conversation to get the best from, but at the end of a long day that's also not always what I feel like dealing with. Particularly in traffic. Fortunately the weather's been dry and cool, so the fact that using the air-con makes the engine stall anywhere except the highway also hasn't been an issue. :P So yeah, while I still get a kick out of driving it every time, I'm also remembering why I replaced it as my daily. Fortunately you've got a selection of cars, because if one thing's for certain: having an alternative mode of transport makes owning a classic far easier to love. 100% worth all the effort though. Anyway, if you'll excuse me, I need to go look at old Mercs on Carsales.

That’s why I have an old Mercedes convertible. I live in London and it takes about 30 minutes to get to a road where I can do 50 plus. So a Lamborghini would be stupid. The old Merc is a great stylish motor with some elegance and practical too.

BMW E30 or E28? The E30 320i you featured before was just lovely, the sound of that inline 6 is just something you cannot get anymore, despite it being considered the 'undesirable' model at the time in favour of the 318iS or the 325i.

I do like my old Mercedes, that was a wonderful era, when the engineers ran the show. When it comes to parts, Mercedes are quite good at stocking their shelves, if it’s not at their UK distribution centre, usually can be overnighted from Germany (though Brexit…), parts aren’t that expensive for original parts either. Sixes are the way to go, V8s are more complex and heavy, vs the power gains and the 4’s are a very anaemic unless you get the 190 Cosworth. The DOHC M104 fitted to the on you drive is a little less durable (head gaskets) than the SOHC M103 from which it was derived, and in a C124 it’s worth taking the hit on power and finding a good pre-facelift 300CE, there’s no risk of biodegradable looms, and the paint was cellulose based, so bodywork holds up better. Oh and the “slush box” just needs to be driven right for the best results, forget the “sport” mode and accept that it will always use second to depart, just use the range hold and you’ll be winning the traffic light grand prix before long, because nobody expects an old Mercedes to gather her skirts and go off then line.

Ex-Japan 280E w' 90k km - these cars are a doddle to live with if they've been looked after & are properly maintained. You're unlucky in that Japan didn't get the E/S switch but they have 1st gear start - so a 280E is therefore plenty quick off the line in modern traffic & just ticks along all day at 120kph. Parts-wise, so much work you can easily do yourself & not expensive if you purchase from the OE suppliers vs. overspending at the dealership for the same part with a MB stamp on it. Prices def' rising for really good examples as people get tired of unserviceable, expensive cars full of stuff just waiting to break. The W124 is just great a being a car, with nothing less or more than you need to travel in style & comfort.

Spot on! I acquired a C124 ('89 300CE) imported from Japan last October. It is an absolute treat to drive. I think at a certain age, you don't care for the burnouts, drag racing, and cutting through traffic, and start to enjoy more the stories and conversations it strikes. Which is does a lot. I am glad to hear that you believe the M103 and pre face lift models are better. I was/still am looking for an air intake tube for the M103 and thought to myself "uh-oh, I got myself a car whose engine was produced for 2 years". Good tidbits on the paint, and I was aware of the wiring harness. Currently 140 000KM on the dial, Midnight on navy, and bought for $3500CAD. Best from CA.

@@dariusandrews4490 I went through this process and just stuck to the standard Nav system. In the glovebox I have an aux input so I just bought a bluetooth unit that connects to my phone and I run Itunes through the aux input. I was thinking about getting an Android nav system but I like my cars standard and those systems are quite expensive anyway. Installation can also be quite complicated if you want your steering wheel buttons to work.

I briefly owned a C208 CLK430 five years ago and loved driving it. So smooth and quite capable along a B road. Bought for £1850 and sold for £2000. Honestly they’re brilliant bargains these old Mercs- just watch for rust! Jay please try a 944 S2. About £15k buys a really good one and I think it would tick a lot of boxes

That's the thing. After a few years they all look dated and out of place. For example, when the W220 came out the MBUX looked amazing. Now it's looks terrible and it keeps repeating itself. Where as these classics they just look timeless and age gracefully. I always put it this way, will you see any Mercedes after the W221 CL on the roads after 10 years from production? Nope. They will all be scrapped and recycled

Actually that's the same with pretty much all new cars Feel the carpet 🤣🤣 it's like moulded plastic Luxury nowadays means you have cheap acrylic instead of moulded plastic carpet It's pretty pathetically tragic actually More orange peel in car paint than an actual orange peel. Enjoyed your video, my 90 300SL(R129) has 5 sp auto here in US, shares alot of the same parts design architecture, is a good runner that I enjoy. Not perfect(yet) but getting there. With the sunroof the w C124 is a really nice compromise without having to rebuild the hydraulics.

I agree with you on many levels. Older cars definitely feel more like living, breathing things. They are a lot more involving. You feel like a part of them when you're driving around, it's _you_ making things happen. New cars are boring and detached. Fine for doodling along in rush hour traffic, but for driving enjoyment? No. I don't think I've ever seen you grin as much as you did driving that 205 GTI.

Merc. SL 1990 ies. LOVELY daily driver ! Found cheap, low milage. Had it de dented, painted, airco filled, new stereo, alarm ! And some plastic replaced. Roof had been done already. Better than new, no depreciation, very low maintenance, many thumbs up on the road... After 52 yrs, I can finally relax behind the wheel, smile, grin from deep inside and be HAPPY !! (On sunny days especially)
