The little screen under the speedometer is for both the outside temperature and oil temperature, that's what the second setting is for. The reason it's showing negative numbers is because the temperature sensor is shot, I suppose. This whole system looks like a Brabus Tempamatic, but with a different switch to operate it, on the original Tempamatic the two switches are located on the headlight bezel, right next to the steering wheel. Also, the steering wheel and pedals don't seem like genuine AMG units, same as the front grille, all W124s came with three horizontal slats in the grille. P.S: A little quirk regarding the folding rear headrests - you can't fold them if the sunshade is up, there's a microswitch that "senses" when the shade is extended, you have to lower the shade first in order to lower the headrests. Also, about the rear seat situation - the reason it has 3 ashtrays is that this seat combination (at least the lower part) was taken/copied from the coupe, which doesn't have side ashtrays, well... since it doesn't have rear doors. I guess they didn't bother deleting that when used in the sedans. I mean, more is better, right?

Thanks for the answer. I have seen a lot of 124s' (E500 and a few E60) but never seen this option. Is a a factory option or dealer installed? or in this case could it be aftermarket? The reason I'm asking is because that "temp" button seems to have a slightly different shade of black, slightly darker, as if it doesn't belong there.
@W124performance
@W124performance Жыл бұрын
@zibi1988pl, you are correct, this car had the rear glass replaced and the wrong type was installed. This was also noted on the 500Eboard forum thread on this car, along with a number of other observations. @Audrius Baranauskas, the Brabus Tempamatic display was an aftermarket accessory, and not very common. It was not installed by AMG and likely not installed by the MB dealer either, unless a customer purchased the kit and asked the dealer to install it post-delivery. The "Temp" button on the console is a custom aftermarket switch, not Mercedes.
@pedrodaniellopesferreira2916
@pedrodaniellopesferreira2916 Жыл бұрын
The "temp" button shifts between exterior and engine oil temp. Typically the engine temp on the cluster is measuring the coolant temperature which is normal between 80ºc and 90cº, but the oil runs over 110ºc. That negative value means that the sensor circuit is open, possibly the sensor was removed.

Just as a comparison, the W124 E-Class was sold in Germany with a 2 l Diesel engine that produced a whopping 72 hp. Coupled with an automatic transmission, it took that model more than 20 seconds to reach 100 km/h (62 mph).
@wowdogeful
@wowdogeful Жыл бұрын
Yeah I remember these being super common back in the day, but I wonder who actually bought these? This was an option you had to pay extra for, you literally had to spend extra money to replace the default 2.0l petrol engine to get a 2.0l naturally aspirated diesel engine with 30 less horsepower. The best part is that it wasn't even that much cheaper to run since this car came out before the German government started aggressively subsidizing diesel fuel
@aphextwin5712
@aphextwin5712 Жыл бұрын
@@wowdogefulBack then Diesel cars were mostly bought by people who drove a lot. Lower fuel costs were one reason, the other was the higher reliability and longevity of Diesel engines. The story back then was that Diesel Mercedes could achieve 500’000 km without too much problems. Our neighbour had one of those. He was a sales agent who travelled a lot in his job. I remember him reporting that on steeper Autobahn stretches, he had to move over to the right lane, because the car couldn’t keep its speed. P.S.: One of those drive-a-lot groups were taxis. The sound of a (Mercedes) Diesel at taxi stands was a very frequent one (modern Diesel engines have a much more subdued sound).

The E and S for the gearbox stand for Economy and Standard mode, not Sport. The only difference is that E won't let it kick down into first gear while S will. Another interesting thing is that the snowchain button adjusts the ASR and allows for a bit more wheel spin before traction control kicks on. As for the rear headrests, fun fact about them: they only drop by the press of the button if the engine is running as it's vacuum-operated. Just a few seconds after turning the engine off you can't drop them anymore. The center sunvisor is an extremely rare option in the 124 series, only few thousand cars were specced with it probably. I have only seen a single 124 (surprisingly a base model 200 E) in my life with this option. The interior is definitely the weak spot of the 124 series. Material quality was declining after the 123 series, the last really durable and refined interior was that of the 126 series S-class. You can see the headliner is giving way in a number of spots and the wood cracking all along in this car too, some plastics have also seen better days. The 124 is a reliable car but its reality is that it was just never that nice. Edit: Maybe the center visor was not an option, I might be wrong about it or it could have changed between the early rubber-stripe and later Sacco-board cars. Just don't take it as a personal insult if I got something wrong.

@griffins750
@griffins750 Жыл бұрын
Not necessarily a sandbag, personally I’ve heard that it has to do with how hard they’ve been driven, journalist I know used to sell cars (lots of them Mercedes back in the early 2000s) and would race 500SLs when they had multiple with his friends, from stop light to stoplight, and what they realized was that the cars that had been driven harder (evidently they knew the customers well enough to know this, again I’m just recounting the story) but they realized that the cars, specifically one 500sl that was owned by a German man who drove the piss out of it, were WAY faster than the ones that had been babied… How any of this works I don’t know, I would imagine with the hard driving the engine gets cleaned out of carbon and any gunk that would get stuck when it’s just sitting a low rpm’s all the time, but I don’t know 🤷

This, being a European spec, has the “manual climate control system”. Yep, you read that right. Notice the EC button between the fan speed and fan position knobs. The prior 124 models had the regular AC button, but this EC meant that you can manually adjust the fan speed and fan position, but it will automatically adjust the air temperature blowing from the vents accordingly to maintain the cabin temp that you set. I had this system and…it works! Very unusual, I don’t know any other car that has this, because all the US spec cars had the automatic climate control (the row of buttons). Also, all the 500e/E500/E60 had different headlights from regular 124s’. They had stronger high beams to give you better visibility when driving at high speeds at night. Notice that the fog lights in the 500e/E500/E60 have been moved to the bumper, and the high beams have been moved to where the fog lights would have been in the regular 124 - the inner side of the headlight. Also, back in the day if you bought the E500 you could later on convert it to the E60 for…50 000 deutchmarks witch was crazy money back then.

One thing regarding the gearbox; the S is for Standard, not Sport! E will shift earlier, kickdown later, and not kick into 1st gear. The gearbox will always start in second gear on the w124, maybe the AMG version has the modified FGS (First Gear Start) valvebody in the transmission. For normal auto w124’s, you can put the box in “2” for a second, and then shift back to D. Like this, the car will start in 1st gear! Great for launches, not so great for smoothness ;)

As this was originally designed for a single airbag, the dual airbag later cars lost the glovebox- same as on the R129. That car did also get a single zone digital climate control, but the W124 only got the analogue AC with the rollers afaik. The reason for 2 individual back seats, is the beefed up 2.65 rear diff from the R129 took up more space in the centre rear area, so the bench was dumped. Regarding the power of the 6.0 version of the M119, they downrated it on paper as to maintain the heirarchy of the 6.0 M120. When Dyno'd they actually make well over 400 hp, there is a Dutch channel who have dyno'd an SL60 with almost the dame engine and it made 427 hp This is why it feels much faster to you than the E500 did .

Doug is the type of guy to tell you how much more fun a car is to drive compared to it's non-AMG counterpart and still give it the same Fun Factor score... 4 as the NON-AMG car... In all seriousness though, I'm long time viewer and love your channel Doug. This is a just an odd inconsistency. Keep up the good work ❤
@12pagani
@12pagani Жыл бұрын
I agree but I feel the amg’s increased fun factor is brought down by the fear of sheer maintenance costs vs a 500e. Try finding an AMG dohc engine and it’s the cost of a very nice 500e. Cams, differentials, body parts (scary if you actually drive it) and those wheels are very easy to crack if you torqued the lugs over 65 to 70 ft-lbs. stock they are at 85 so many a shop has cracked these amg oz wheels
@christianharris4800
@christianharris4800 Жыл бұрын
I'm totally with you on fear of things breaking limiting potential fun, but reliability should be mostly if not completely covered in the practicality and value parts of the Doug Score... And Fun Factor is in the Weekend Category and at least to me weekend(as opposed to daily drivers) cars don't have to be reliable to be fun... Still though imagining trying to find parts for that car sounds like a headache to say the least.

7:25 - headlight wipers were mandatory in many European countries. Especially nordic countries. Real headache to maintain in the winter time. That’s why they are not required in modern cars. W124 design was built driver and passenger safety first. First car built with recycle all materials and biodegradable wiring harness that was made to last 15 years. Mercedes was surprised how popular this model became. Last great Mercedes model line up.

As the owner of a W206 C43, I can tell you that the interior is the standard W206 C-class other than AMG branding on the steering wheel and instrument cluster and an upgraded steering wheel. Some things don’t change. The electronics are different (AMG Dynamics and Track Pace), and it has the M193L motor with the huge Garrett EL turbo. I like it very much, it’s a performance bargain at the price.

About the steering: The model you are driving looks like "Sportline" interior (small badges on the front doors will also say Sportline), Sportline models have lowered suspension (ok, this one has AMG springs) but the most important thing different steering box, different ratio - steering feels heavier and gives loads more feedback than the standard models do.

Hello Doug, I have the solution for the Temp switch. I own one myself. Due to the modded E60 (there are some modifications that aren’t OEM by AMG) this temp switch is a Brabus invention that shows the Motor oil temperature. Brabus said” Full throttle after 80° Celsius, NOT before 😎) AMG didn’t have that back in these days but Brabus did have that. The problem with this temperature diode is it didn’t work properly because the diode was a bit wobbly and not very precise because the place where the diode takes place is in the sump and sometimes it touched the metal of the sump so the temperature was too low. Cave ⚡️ on the speedo you can only see Oil pressure and the cooling water temperature but NOT the Oil temperature.
