Hi Paul, when ETA announced they wanted to cease supplying outside of the Swatch Group, the Swiss Competition Commission stepped in to ensure the other companies were given time to make alternative arrangements. The lack of lost and stolen register(s) is clearly a different issue, but do you think approaching the same Commission and/or another part of the Swiss authorities could assist in applying pressure on Rolex (and other brands) to maintain such registers?

I don't understand this because if I ever make a bank transfer, before I press send, a message pops up on screen saying something along the lines of once the payment is sent it cannot be stopped, returned, amended or retrieved? So how do the scammers do it? Do they have a different type of account??
@tn_onyoutube84364 жыл бұрын
No, they just use a different element of the terms and conditions which the bank don’t refer to in your example. If you read the actual terms it will include words to the effect that if the goods you are selling are not received they can take the money back.

Additionally I would add as I have said before, in the case I am referring to, the purchasers details, ie the individual who paid for the watch is different to the details appearing on the warranty card. How can this be. It can and has done in this case caused so many problems regarding who the watch belongs to.

Great video Paul. Worrying for anyone who is selling high end / luxury goods. Whilst your phone call questions to the bank work for now, if the banks were continually losing money because their employees answered questions incorrectly they would all be trained to give vague answers and then we are back to square one. The main problem I can see is that in the UK basically all banks are exactly the same and there is little difference between any brand. All have the same policies and structure so there is little point changing bank when they wrong you.

I’m in USA. When I wire money, the bank sends a security code to my personal cellphone to authenticate me (while in the bank) beside me showing ID. Not sure if that helps prevents fraud.
@tn_onyoutube84364 жыл бұрын
Like all the other possible ways around this issue, no, that would not work against the premise of these scams. The issue is not that the scammer did not get the money (which is what your security code example proves against), but that they then claim they did not get the goods, in multiple different scenarios. The bank then gives them their money back and you’re left with no recourse. It is not the money transfer, it is the goods, or as in one of Paul’s examples, a fraud combining both.

There needs to be an extra parallel bank trasfer option, another 'avenue'... Similar to transfer but called 'Secure Transfer'. Basically the buyer initiates that with his/her bank, either in bank, over phone, or online video call, and funds cannot be reversed...

Other channels may be more ‘entertaining,’ but yours is still and by far the most valuable. I consider this the Continued Professional Development channel that the other watch KZbinrs need to survive safely! On the register point, unfortunately the less safe it is for punters to buy used Rolex, the greater the likelihood that they will buy new. This can only benefit Rolex and we all know where the sword falls when money and morals are pitched against each other. Great work as always Paul. I hope your watch comes home 😉👍

The issue with that theory mate is that buyers cannot be swayed to buy new as it is almost impossible and looks to be getting worse. You would know as you have been waiting for 7 months for a watch that usually sits in AD's windows
@mr_watchaddict31464 жыл бұрын
mattchedzey That’s true of course, but it does tempt people to join waiting lists before they’ve even decided they want the watch as they know it’ll be the lowest price available so they won’t lose money if they need to get out of it by selling. My AD manager said, apparently correctly, that Rolex just don’t care. If they did they’d increase supply. They don’t, and they’re branding masters as a result. The fact they’re a trust/charity surely has something to do with it. I must say though, I’ve not seen a 214270 in a shop window in the UK so far! Where are you if you don’t mind me asking?

I think wire transfers should be done in person. Where the buyer transfers the money with the help of a bank teller, that way they can't claim that they didn't do that wire transfer. Or when purchasing a watch in person, the buyer needs to pay with a cashiers check which is certified funds and it clears as soon as the check is deposited into the bank account.

Great content Paul. Always a contentious subject but I like the idea of national ID card, it would prevent a huge amount of fraud (and other criminal activity). I've lived as an expat in the UAE and the residents Emirates ID card is required for all significant purchases - it's photographic and biometric. For those that say it abuses their human rights and its 'big brother' watching, I say to them, when you've been a victim of large scale fraud and lost all your cash and no-one is held responsible, you might just change your mind.

What about a payments account? You receive money into one account and then move it to another bank yourself so it can’t be recalled. Ultimately you would still be in debt to the bank (but only with their own money) and need to do your due diligence but it’s easier to argue when you have the money.
@Rolexingryan4 жыл бұрын
I'm across the pond in the US and as far as I know if you make a bank transfer the money is gone. Now if you do report it as fraud from what I understand it is the bank that takes the loss and then they go after the money. I could be wrong about this but our banking system seems to work very different from yours. As far as Rolex releasing its stolen watches information I don't think they will ever do so. This keeps them as the sole gate keeper and makes sure they get the money for doing the services. I do think you are right that only very heavy pressure on Rolex to make this public is the only way to change it. Thank you for your great videos and keep up the good work.

Paul we run our own flooring business. Let me tell this about credit cards. We took a phone order. We do a security check against postcode and door number. Credit card company approves transaction. 30 days later credit card company takes its money back out of our bank. Credit card was stolen by a postman in Scotland. Door number 22 and postcode say ED9 5QP. I found all the scammers need to do is match door number and postcode from stolen card to original address and the phone or Internet transaction will go through. They then give a door number 22 and postcode in our area with the same numbers. Say CM9 5BP. We enter 22 9 and 5 bingo. If you are taking cards folks be aware of this. You can phone them and check

Northwest at nite - well, no, there is recourse, but generally it is very difficult to prove the case beyond doubt. You can dispute the chargebacks, provide “proof” the buyer got the goods, sue the buyer, go to the police (good luck with that one). But all very difficult, likely very expensive too. I guess another way out is insurance when sending the goods. There will be suitable policies for this, not sure how expensive. The more I think about it, assuming it is as good as they claim, the only way is using Chrono24 type escrow services, but even there you probably need insurance too.

Hi Paul, thanks for all your content you put out, best watch channel going 👍🏻👍🏻 I agree the banking system is absolutely nuts and it’s definitely not as secure as the vast majority of the general public think it is. I think an answer to this problem for both buyers and sellers is Bitcoin. Bitcoin allows me to send ANY amount of Bitcoin (money) to whoever I choose ANYWHERE in the world and it doesn’t need the banking system to approve/disapprove the transaction. It’s also reasonably quick to do and once I send the Bitcoin to you for example, the only way I could get that back is if you were to send it back to me. There is absolutely no way to get it back which means the scammers would have no authority to go to and carry out this scam. I appreciate a lot of people either don’t know about or understand Bitcoin YET but I really do think it’s the future of money and it allows the individual to be responsible for their own finances. Bitcoin can’t be stopped at all by anyone, ever and I think the businesses that adapt and use this technology will be the ones to reap the reward down the line 💪🏻💪🏻

Great vid Paul. I'd like your opinion on a potential scam.I have a watch listed on C24 and was contacted by a buyer in another country who was interested in buying it. I thought this was strange as this same watch is available in his own country and another one in a neighbouring country, for a similar price (mine was also used but the others were unworn). The other sellers were also verified dealers with hundreds of transactions done on C24. Considering if he bought it from me he would also have to pay import duties, while if he bought it from those 2 other sellers, he would not have to, I found this to be very strange. Not sure whether it was a potential scam or not but it just seemed off. Isn't this why most dealers will not send an item to any other address than the one registered to the bank account? surely it would be a bit hard to argue that you never made the purchase and get your money back in that scenario?

No its the address on a card payment. Bank Transfers do not require a matching address for shipment.

Great video, Paul, thank you. About emailing picture of passport, I am paranoid and personally wouldn't do that for anyone. Would rather go without the watch. Just me.

How the fuck is it even possible to have a society that is so easily traceable by digital transactions and these crimes go unpunished? You have a delivery address and the police won't go and investigate? It's criminal.

Recently sold s watch via c24. Strange address turned out to be a courier company in Slough. Address had a 'RUH' number which meant it would be redirected to Saudi Arabia by the courier firm upon arrival. It seemed odd but all turned out ok. I also ad the address re confirmed by c24.
